Malaysia takes convincing lead

18th May, Hanoi: Team of Four defending champion, Malaysia took a convincing lead after the first block in the Team of Four event at the 31st SEA Games Vietnam 2021 on Wednesday, 68 pins ahead of Philippines in second and Singapore third.

Mohd Hafiz Zainuddin, Nervern Netaneel, Shahkruh Amin Zulkifli and Mohd Syazirol Shamsudin got off to a cracking start with 906 in their opening game. Philippines' Patrick Nuqui, Christian Dychangco, Ivan Malig and anchored by Singles gold medallist, Marwin Tan kept pace with the Malaysians rolling 890.

Doubles gold medallists of Ryan Lalisang and Hardy Rachmadian teaming up with Yeri Ramadona and Diwan Rezaldy downed 888 for third while Doubles silver and bronze medallists, Muhd Jaris Goh, Timothy Tham, Darren Ong and Cheah Ray Han managed 860 for fourth.

The tussle for the lead was more intense after the second game when the gap amongst the top three teams came down to just one pin separating them. Malaysia kept the lead despite managing only 851. Philippines narrowed the gap with 866.

Singapore took over third spot with a strong 895 as Indonesia suffered a lowly 781 to drop to fourth. Malaysia ended the strongest with 922 in their third game to extend their lead to 68 pins. Philippines shot 855 to stay in second and Singapore only 742 but held on to their third spot.

Indonesia was unable to take the opportunity to overtake Singapore with another poor game of 739 to remain in fourth. Thailand rounded out the top five ahead of host nation in sixth.

The women will contest their first block of three games in the afternoon. The men will resume with their second block tomorrow followed the women in the afternoon, thus concluding the 31st SEA Games Vietnam 2021 bowling competition.
