Singapore youths sweep U13 and U15 Masters titles

1st September, Bangkok: Andre Chew led Singapore youths to a clean sweep of the Youth 15 & Under Masters titles at the 46th MWA-Singha Thailand International Open with Calvin Sasandi picking up the Youth 13 & Under crown.

Ian Tay of Singapore got off to a cracking start with 267 in his opening game to lead Wilfred Er Hong Yi by 38 pins followed by 21st Asian Junior Team bronze medallist, Mathieu Louis three pins adrift in third. Tay continued to lead the field with 215 and 225 in his next two games.

Mok Jing Neng Thaddaeus moved into second spot ahead of Chew in third with a strong 242. Chew added another 244 in the fourth game to take over the running as Louis bounced back with 256 to move up to second and Tay slipping down to third.

But Tay fought back with 247 to regain the lead and moving 14 pins ahead of Chew. It was Chew, who ended the finals strongly with 223, to clinch the title with 1364. Louis also ended strongly but fell short by a single pin to settle for second with 1363.

Tay managed only 205 to take third position with 1360. Mok and Er rounded out a complete top 5 finish for Singapore youths in fourth and fifth positions.

Meanwhile, it was another dominiating display by Singapore youths in the 13 & Under Masters Finals. Calvin Sasanadi claimed the title with 1155 after taking over the running in the third game from pace-setter, Shannon Lee, who has an 8-pin handicap competing as a female.

Lee however had to settle for third position with 1138 after Tran Hoang Khoi of Vietnam spoiled Singapore's celebrations with a second-place finish with 1142. Mr Rattanarat Wiwatchai, TTBA Committee Member was on hand to present the prizes to the winners.

The Youth 18 & Under Masters Finals will follow later in the afternoon while the Youth 21 & Under will be contested this evening. Masters qualifying for the Graded A, B, Ladies Graded and Senior divisions will end September 3.
