Brit makes top bracket

11th December, Doha: 2011 champion, Dominic Barrett of England made the top bracket of the H.H. Amir Cup Bowling Championships 2024 by taking up fourth in the qualifying standings as Qatari youth, Talal Ali Al Marri remained the leader and Tomas Kayhko of Finland in second.

Barrett, who started his qualifying rounds yesterday with two superb series of 737 and 749, added a 710 series to take his 9-games tally to 2196. The 39-year-old winner of three Major PBA titles and seven standard titles, also finished as second runner up in 2012 after winning his first Amir Cup title in 2011.

Talal Ali Al Marri, winner of back-to-back High Series Awards, remained firmly in the lead with 2274. 2022 champion and the second perfect gamer, Tomas Kayhko of Finland was unable to take over the lead despite several attemps made today and stayed in second with 2244.

2023 World Championships Trio gold medalist, Tony Wong of Hong Kong, China also remained in third with 2236, 40 pins ahead of Barrett. Wong's team-mate, Ivan Tse leapfrog into fifth spot with 2192 while defending champion, Kim Bolleby of Sweden took the last top bracket spot in sixth position with 2178.

Newcomer, Noel Haglund Torgersen of Sweden dropped out of the top bracket to settle for seventh position with 2176. Day 3 High Series Award winner, Yousef Falah of Bahrain, Abdulrahman Hadi Al Doseri of Qatar and Adel Al Barqi of Saudi Arabia completed the top 10 with2159, 2147 and 2145 respectively.

The top women qualifier was 2024 PWBA Player of the Year and winner of Day 5 High Series Award, Sin Li Jane of Malaysia taking up 16th position with 2132. Her compatriot, Nora Lyana Nastasia, who won the Day 1 High Series Award will automatically qualify for Step 1 Finals being one of the top 2 first two days qualifiers.

Mohammed Al Saud of Saudi Arabia is the other top 2 first two days qualifier. The current cut at 28th position went to William Svensson of Sweden with 2100.

Qualifiers positioned 7 to 28 along with top 2 qualifiers from the first two days of qualifying rounds and top 2 Qatari youths qualifiers not in 7 to 28 positions plus top 2 local Qatari qualifiers and top 2 from the desperado squad will contest Step 1 Finals on Friday, December 13.

The top 20 with the highest score after 8 games will be joined by the top 6 seeded qualifiers for Step 2 Finals. The top 5 with the highest score will advance to the Stepladder Finals Shoot Out Step 3, 4 and 5 to determine this year's champion. Qualifying will continue for one more day which will end on December 12.
