Swede regains lead in qualifying

6th November, Doha: 2013 Kuwait Open champion, Pontus Andersson of Sweden regained his lead in the qualifying standings of the H.H. Amir Cup 2025 after rolling a perfect game en-route to register the first 800-series on the final day.

Andersson, who had topped the standings since Tuesday with 2259, slipped down to second after Valentin Saulnier of Canada took over top spot with a Day 7 High Series Award of 788 and a 9-game tally of 2296. But the Swede shot 247, 259 and 300 in Squad 35 for a sizzling 806 series and a new total of 2335 to regain the lead.

Saulnier settled for second while Qatari youth, Masaed Al Muraikhi became the second qualifier to shoot an 800-series to leapfrog into third position in the standings with 2248. Finland youth, Nooa Vilokkinen also improved to take up fourth with 2239.

Canadian youth, Mathis Blanchette occupied fifth position with 2224 while Day 5 High Series Award winner, Soliman Alshuaibi of Kuwait slipped down to sixth with 2212. A second Qatari youth, Bader Khalid Al Sada did well to join his team-mate in the top bracket in seventh position with 2208.


Pontus Andersson regaining the lead with a perfect game and an 806-series

Swedish youth, Carl Eklund squeezed into the top bracket in eighth position with 2197. The top 8 will earn a bye and automatically advance to Step 2 Finals. Day 3 High Series Award winner, Ghanim M Aboujassom of Qatar, who was third two days ago, slipped down to head qualifiers positioned 9 to 32 with 2193.

Also dropping out of the top bracket was Day 2 High Series Award winner, Mostafa Almousawi of Kuwait making up the top 10 with 2192. Defending champion, Christopher Sloan of Ireland made good progress to finish 11th with 2187.

The cut in 32nd position went to Obaid Al Saadi of UAE with 2131, 331 over or averaging 236.78 which is way higher than last year's cut. Mohammad Abul of Kuwait and Ali Al Rashdi of UAE were the two highest qualifiers from the first two days of qualifying taking up 33rd and 34th.

The top 2 highest Qatari youths (positioned 35 to 36) will join in Step 1 finals as well. The top 2 highest Qataris (positioned 37 to 38) and the top 2 from Desperado squad (positioned 39 to 40) will make up a total of 32 qualifiers.

Qualifying will continue will end late tonight followed by a Desperado Squad. The top 3 youths will advance to the stepladder finals after which Step 1 finals will be held on November 7. The top 16 with the highest pinfalls after 8 games will advance to Step 3 finals joined by the eight seeded qualifier for another 8 game.
