12th May, Hong Kong: Hong Kong will be hosting the IBSA Tenpin Bowling Asian Championships followed by the 1st Asian Para Tenpin Bowling Championships 2023 at Belair Bowling Centre in Shatin from May 21 to 24 and May 26 to 31.

At the launch during a press conference, Hong Kong Paralympic Committee announced that IBSA has awarded the hosting rights and that the IBSA Tenpin Bowling Asian Championships will be an Asian Qualification event fot the Birmingham IBSA World Games to be held in August 2023.

There are a total of 42 Visually Impaired athletes from six countries and territories which includes Japan, Republic of Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Chinese Taipei and Hong Kong, China. These athletes will bowl a total of six games each for a top six qualification positions in Class B1, B2 and B3 in the Men and Women divisions respectively.

There will be an Opening Ceremony of the IBSA Tenpin Bowling Championships to be held on Monday, May 22, 2023 at 6.00pm at Belair Bowling Centre graced by Mrs Jenny Fung, BBS, JP, President of Hong Kong Paralympic Committee, Mr Z. Barlok, Chairman of IBSA Tenpin Bowling Sports Committee and Mr Paul Cheng, Acting Commissioner for Sports, Culture, Sports and Tourism Board and a host of dignitaries.

At the conference, it was also announced that the 1st Asian Para Tenpin Bowling Championships 2023, the first-ever official Asian Para Tenpin Bowling Championships being staged in Asia, has been awarded to the Hong Kong Sports Association for the Physically Disabled by Asian Bowling Federation under the leadership of His Excellence, Sheikh Talal Mohammad Al-Sabah, President of International Bowling Federation and Asian Bowling Federation.

Mr Vincent Liu, JP, Director of Leisure and Cultural Services and Mrs Jenny Fung, BBS, JP., President of Hong Kong Paralympic Committee will officiate the Opening Ceremony on May 27 at 6.45pm at Belair Bowling Centre.

As H.E. Sheikh Talal Mohammad Al-Sabah will not be able to come to Hong Kong, Ms Vivien Lau, SBS, JP., Honorary Life President of Asian Bowling Federation will represent him at the opening ceremony.

The championships consist of tenpin bowling competition for Wheelchair, Physically Handicapped and Visually Impaired athletes. As of today, eight countries and territories have confirmed their participation which include India, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Chinese Taipei and Hong Kong, China.

A promotional video will be shown on the LED screen in Tsim Sha Tsui, Mongkok and Causeway Bay before and during and period of the two championships.

World Championships Gold medallists, Mr Wu Siu Hong and Mr Eric Tseng will also be conducting a coaching clinic to ten students from Ebenezer School and Home for the Visually Impaired at the South China Athletic Association Bowling Centre on Sunway, May 14, 2023 from 10.00 am to 12.00 noon.
