Malaysians continue to rule in qualifying

7th March, Taoyuan: Overnight leader, Ethan Damien Goh of Malaysia continued his fine form by topping the Open division overseas pool of the 2nd Formosa International Bowling Classic 2025 at the end of the third block of qualifying rounds ahead of compatriot, Syaffique Ikhwan in second and Tony Wong of Hong Kong third.

Goh rolled 1086 in the first block, 1111 in the second block and 1091 in the third block to lead with a 15-game total of 3288. Left-hander and compatriot, Syaffique Ikhwan finished second with 3223 while third position went to Tony Wong of Hong Kong with 3168.

Li Ying Chi of Chinese Taipei, topped the local standings with 3255 followed by Squad D Block 3 leader, Yeh Chian Yu in second with 3167. Yeh is also the top women qualifier albeit with a 14-pin handicap. Lin Yueh Liang occupied third spot with 3165.

The top three local and top three overseas qualifiers earned a bye and skip Round 1 finals after automatically advancing to Round 2. Hong Kong's Ernest Kwok missed the top bracket after slipping down to seventh to head the mixed pool with 3160.

Squad B leader, Shimoji Yoshinao of Japan finished eighth position with 3154. Malaysia's Muhammad Noor Hidayat, who was third in the overseas pool after the second block also missed out by ending in tenth position with 3140. The cut in 51st position went to last year's first runner-up, Johnathan Chan of Sunway Megalanes, Malaysia with 2953. Fellow-countrymen, Wan Muhammad Zarif Ikram missed the cut for the finals by just two pins.

Taiwanese Chen Kuan Lun, Wang Yu Huei and Vietnamese Le Hoang Khoi qualified from the Desperado squad with 258, 244 and 243 respectively.

Qualifiers positioned 7 to 51 plus top three qualifiers from the one-game desperado squad will contest Round 1 finals over 6 games. The top 26 with the highest pinfalls will advance to Round 2 finals for another 6 games, joined by the six seeded qualifiers from the general standings.

The top six at the end of Round 2 will proceed to the Stepladder elimination knockout finals with 4th, 5th and 6th seeded finalist meeting in the first match. The winner will proceed to the second match against the 2nd and 3rd seed over one game. The winner of the second match will face the top seed over beat twice format and declared this year's champion.

Lin Yueh Liang topped the Youth U22 division with 3165 while Squad A leader, Ethan Damien Goh of Malaysia led the overseas pool with 3288. The cut in 24th position went to Jovi Ma of Hong Kong, China with 2883. The Youth U22 and the Senior divisions will contest their finals tomorrow at 9.20 am local lime.
