CGU ABT China Leg Qualifying Classic
Carl De Vries, Huang Li Qin tops qualifying finals

17th August, 2002: Singapore's Carl De Vries and China's Huang Li Qin topped the Men's and Women's CGU ABT China Leg qualifying finals. The special qualifying round replaces the cancelled 10th China International Open originally sceduled at the Guangzhou Huatai Bowling Center.

The Singapore national youth bowler scored 1,691 in the second block to add to his 1,844 in the first block for a total of 3,535. Aaron Chin of Malaysia maintained his second place with 3,493 while third place went to local Li Jung Xiong of China on 3,458. Chinese Taipei's Cheng Chao Yu and Hong Kong's Frankie Chueng both improved their positions to fourth and fifth with 3,431 and 3,413 respectively while Singapore's Lenny Lim finished sixth with 3,372 alongside teammate, Mervyn Foo in seventh with 3,310.

In the women's division, China took the four top spots with Huang Li Qin maintaining her lead comfortably with 3,415 followed by Song Yan on 3,191 in second. Yang Zhan Fei finished third with 3,145 while Liang Li Ying took fourth spot with 3,137. Hong Kong's Fleda Lau was placed fifth with 3,113 while another Chinese Liao Pei Shan came in sixth with 3,105. With major absentees from the other Asian countries, who are busy preparing for the Asian Games, the field was mostly dominated by newcomers from China.

Detailed scores are available for Men's and Women's. The top 14 Men and Women have qualified for the CGU Asian Bowling Tour China leg which will be played tomorrow (18th and 19th August) at the same venue in Guangzhou.

16th August, 2002: Singapore's Carl De Vries and China's Huang Li Qin leads the Men's and Women's CGU ABT China Leg qualifying first block finals. The special qualifying round replaces the cancelled 10th China International Open originally sceduled at the Guangzhou Huatai Bowling Center.

The 20 year-old Singaporean scored 1,844 over the 8-game first block finals just 3 pins ahead of Aaron Chin of Malaysia in second. In third place was local Li Jung Xiong of China on 1,799 with De Vries' teammate, Lenny Lim in fourth with 1,706. Chinese Taipei's Cheng Chao Yu took fifth spot with 1,696 another Singaporean, Mervyn Foo in sixth place with 1,687. Hong Kong's ex-international, Frankie Chueng is seventh with 1,675 while De Vries' brother, Marc is eight with 1,643.

In the women's division, China's Huang Li Qin topped the pack comfortably with 1,768 followed by Hong Kong's Felda Lau a distant second with 1,627 while Liu Su Min of China took third spot with 1,606. Chinese women then occupied 4th to 10th places with Hong Kong's Janet Lam in 11th on 1,534.
