Tom Hahl, Koo Hyun Jee captures Hong Kong Open titles

30th November, Hong Kong: 1999 AVIVA ABT Thailand Leg champion, Tom Hahl of Singapore and Korea's Koo Hyun Jee captured the the 28th Hong Kong International Open Masters titles at the SCAA Bowling Centre in Caroline Hill in Hong Kong.

Singapore's naturalised citizen, Tom Hahl continued his impressive run to maintain the top position with a 3450 total, averaging 215.6, one rung below was Korea's Yoon Dal Young on 3402 and Purvis Granger who donned the colours of Philippines finishing 3rd on 3400. Spinner, Wong Tien Fu of Chinese Taipei was in 4th place, Duane Camacho of Guam ended in 5th position and local star, Chris Chui earned the 6th berth to qualify for the step-ladder finals.

In match 1, the capacity crowd cheered local star, Chris Chui to beat Wong Tien Fu (TPE) and Duane Camacho (GUAM) on a 211-178-165 scoreline. In match 2, Chris Chui was awesome as he reeled 7 consecutive strikes to force out Purvis Granger (PHI) and Yoon Dal Young (KOR) on a high 258-204-187 margin. In the final match, Chris Chui met his Waterloo as he was eventually beaten by Tom Hahl of Singapore on a 197-184 margin.

Masters title


In the Women's division, Malaysia's Wendy Chai was denied the Championship title when she was edged out by Koo Hyun Jee of Korea in the sudden death game of step-ladder finals. Starting from 2nd position after the 1st block, Wendy Chai accelerated her momentum on the lanes to overtake leader, Shalin Zulkifli midway in the second block. Koo Hyun Jee of Korea came from behind to score 3353, relegating Shalin Zulkifli to 3rd placing with 3341. Malaysia's Sarah Yap stormed home with a 248 game to position herself in 4th place, followed by Valerie Teo of Singapore in 5th place and Sharon Chai of Malaysia made the cut to the step-ladder finals on 6th placing.

In match 1 of the Step-Ladder finals, it was a close encounter between the 3 bowlers till the 8th frame when Valerie Teo has a turkey strike, forcing Sarah Yap to spare home to win the game.

Sarah had a solid 1-3 pocket to see pin 10 standing. Much to the amazement of the crowd, Sarah missed the spare and gave away the game to Valerie. In match 2, the ding dong battle continued where Koo Hyun Jee prevailed as the winner with a 213 - 210 - 182 victory over Valerie and Shalin. In the final match, leader Wendy Chai was in the driver's seat until the last frame where she failed to convert the 3-6-9,10 and lost the game 222-226. In the sudden death game, Koo Hyun Jee tamed Wendy with a 205 - 160 margin to lift the Women's title. The top 14 men and women from the Open Masters finals will qualify for the AVIVA Asian Bowling Tour Hong Kong leg which will be played on the 1st and 2nd December.

Malaysian women dominate first block Masters finals

29th November, Hong Kong: Two-times Asian Bowler of the Year, Shalin Zulkifli lead the Malaysian women in the first block Masters finals occupying 5 of the six top spots of the 28th Hong Kong International Open at the SCAA Bowling Centre in Caroline Hill in Hong Kong while Singapore's Tom Hahl topped the Men's.

The Asian Games Masters' Gold medallist was awesome with her scintillating prowess; consistent in her delivery of 194, 246, 225, 227, 216, 229, 255 and 184 for an impressive composite of 1776, averaging 222. Team-mate, Wendy Chai completed a 1-2 finish for Malaysia with an equally impressive score-line of 202, 223, 227,207, 213, 243, 225, and 195 for a total of 1735, 41 pins behind Shalin. Valerie Teo of Singapore prevented a clean sweep by the Malaysian bowlers as she paced herself into 3rd position with a commendable 1725 total. Malaysia's Sharon Chai, Sarah Yap and defending champion, Lai Kin Ngoh staged a creditable performance to position themselves in 4th, 5th & 6th placing.

Local favourite, Melody Yeung finished 7th with 1608 followed by 2001 AVIVA Asian Bowling Tour Grand Slam champion, Lee Mi Young in 8th with 1591 while Cookie Lee (HKG - 1581) and Shibata Tomomi (JPN - 1570) took up 9th and 10th placings respectively.

In the Men's Open Masters division, Singapore's naturalised citizen, Tom Hahl was in fiery form as he brushed aside a strong field of contenders to lead the pack. Tom blasted a score of 246 for the first game, and followed with 208, 219, 174, 237, 243, 256 and 204 for a 1787 total, averaging 223.4. "Big Daddy" of Guam was 40 pins behind Tom on 1747 while Hong Kong's local star, Chris Chui finished on a strong 1734 total in third.

Taipei's Wang Tien Fu took fourth spot with 1731 followed by Korea's Yoon Dal Young in fifth with 1712. Newcomer, Lie Joe Tjam of Indonesia followed next with 1681 in sixth while Alfred Pang (HKG - 1670), Purvis Granger (PHI - 1668), Chiang Kwok Fai (HKG - 1658) and Guerrero Jay Leon (GUAM - 1637) wrapped up the top 10 of the first block from 7th to 10th respectively.

Another block of 8 games would be rolled-off tomorrow morning, where the top 6 bowlers from both divisions would proceed to the step-ladder Finals. The top 14 men and women from the Open Masters finals will qualify for the AVIVA Asian Bowling Tour Hong Kong leg which will be played on the 1st and 2nd December.

Sharon Chai takes pole, Chester King shares lead in Men's table

28th November, Hong Kong: Malaysia's Sharon Chai took pole position in the Women's Open Masters qualifying table of the 28th Hong Kong International Open at the SCAA Bowling Centre in Caroline Hill in Hong Kong while Philippines' Chester King shared the lead with Ryan Lalisang of Indonesia in the Men's.

Despite the cool chilling wind blowing from the South China Sea, the temperature inside the SCAA Bowling Centre was rising as the bowlers were jostling for the Finals' berth on the last day of qualifying attempts.

Alvin Kwang of Singapore became the proud owner of a sporty Madza 2 MUV car for achieving the perfect game feat. Just turned 21, the Singapore youth was on cloud nine as he immaculately reeled 12 consecutive strikes for the magical 300 score in his 3rd game. Alvin couldn't asked for a better present for his belated birthday gift. Present to share his joy was his beaming and supportive mother. Buoyed by his achievement, Alvin complete his attempt with a 210, 235, 300 and 208 for a 944 total to position himself in third position. Chester King of Philippines made his presence felt with a polished display of 956 total to tie with local favourite, Wu Siu Hong as the joint leader.

Bowling in the 10:30am squad, Malaysia's Sharon Chai surged to the pole position of the Women's Open Masters division. Two special announcements were made through the P.A. system as Sharon consecutively achieved 7 strikes in her first 2 games. She had the lines of 268, 256, 213 and 184 for an impressive 921 total to relegate Yap Seok Kim of Singapore into second place on a 901 total. Malaysia's Shalin Zulkifli and Asian Games Doubles Gold medalist, Sarah Yap re-positioned herself in third and fourth spots with a creditable showing of 896 and 889 index respectively. Korea's Koo Hyun Jee took fifth with 884 followed by two Indonesians Tan Bie Ling (876) and Putty Armein (875) in sixth and seventh. Melody Yeung of Hong Kong maintained her top position of the Women's local pool with 880, ahead of Carol Choi in second on 872 while Veronica Wong took third with 831.

Qualifying ends tonight and the Open Masters 1st block finals will be played on tomorrow, Saturday, 29th November. The 28th Hong Kong International Open is organised by Hong Kong Tenpin Bowling Congress and hosted at the South China Athletic Association (SCAA) Bowling Centre at Caroline Hill. The top 14 men and women from the Open Masters finals will qualify for the AVIVA Asian Bowling Tour Hong Kong leg which will be played on the 1st and 2nd December.

27th November, Hong Kong: Indonesia's rising star, Ryan Lalisang and 2001 AVIVA ABT China Leg champion, Yap Seok Kim took over the lead in the Men's and Women's Open Masters qualifying table of the 28th Hong Kong International Open at the SCAA Bowling Centre in Caroline Hill in Hong Kong.

Competition atmosphere intensified in the Men's Open division as several established bowlers dug into their reserves to vie for a place in this weekend's Finals. Indonesia's rising star, Ryan Lalisang showed his maturity to upstage the more seasoned campaigners with an immaculate performance. Ryan started with a superb progression of 236, 259, 267 and 194 for a 956 total to emerge as the new leader. Lalisang, who comes from Jakarta, finished fifth in the season starter, the Mahatrako Cup in January this year. The overnight leader, Sam Goh of Singapore dropped a spot to second with 938 total while the two Gold medalist of the recently concluded 16th Asian Intercity Championship, Yoon Dal Young of Korea bowled 926 composite to stake in third.

Yoon's teammate Yang Tae Bum was fourth with 926 followed by the 16th Intercity Masters champion, Duane "Big Daddy" Camacho of Guam in fifth with 906.

In the Women's division, the 2001 AVIVA Asian Bowling Tour China Leg champion, Yap Seok Kim of Singapore was enjoying her new found freedom as she scorched the lanes with a 214, 225, 214 and 248 for a 901 total. The Singapore petite lass took over the lead from Shalin Zulkifli of Malaysia, who dropped one spot to second with her 896 effort yesterday. Asian Games Doubles Gold medalist, Sarah Yap of Malaysia leapfrogged into third position with a creditable showing of 889 ahead of Korea's Koo Hyun Jee in fourth with 884.

Indonesia's Tan Bie Ling was fifth with 876 while 20 year-old Putty Armein of Indonesia and Singapore's Valerie Teo both improved but remained sixth and seventh with 875 and 872 respectively. Melody Yeung of Hong Kong topped the Women's local pool with 880 and third overall, ahead of Carol Choi in second on 872 while Veronica Wong took third with 831.

26th November, Hong Kong: Busan Asian Games Trios Gold medalist, Sam Goh of Singapore and Masters Gold medalist, Shalin Zulkifli of Malaysia took an early lead in the Men's and Women's Open qualifying overseas pool of the 28th Hong Kong International Open at the SCAA Bowling Centre, Caroline Hill in Hong Kong.

Goh, the 44 year-old veteran Singapore National bowler who failed to defend his title at the 6th Chinese Taipei Open last month finishing only tenth, staked his claim of the Hong Kong Open title with an impressive 938 over his 4-game qualifying round to head the Men's Open overseas qualifying table. Malaysia's Azidi Ameran was second with 901 while Indonesia's newcomer, Lie Joe Tjam took third spot with 891. Former Wolrd Champion and runner-up in the AVIVA Asian Bowling Tour Taipei Leg, Tom Hahl of Singapore was fourth just one pin from the Indonesia on 890 followed by another Indonesian, Ryan Lalisang on 886.

Dennis Chan of Hong Kong, took the lead of the local pool with a score of 946 pinfalls followed by Chiang Kwok Fai on 917 and Law Lin Sing with 911. The top 35 bowlers with the highest score together with the defending champion, Ben Heng of Malaysia will qualify for the Masters finals.

In the women's division, two-times Asian Bowler of the Year and Busan Asian Games Masters Gold medalist, Shalin Zulkifli of Malaysia took the overall lead of the Masters qualifying table from her first attempt scoring 896 this afternoon. The 24 year-old Sports Science undergraduate, impressed with 223, 196, 248 and 229 to average 224. She did not compete in the 6th Taipei Open but her last outing was finishing 5th in the 2nd Vietnam Open early this month.

Korea's Koo Hyun Jee took second spot with 884 with Indonesia's Tan Bie Ling with 876. 20 year-old Putty Armein of Indonesia and Singapore's Valerie Teo was placed fourth and fifth with 872 and 849 respectively. Melody Yeung of Hong Kong topped the Women's local pool with 880 and third overall, ahead of Carol Choi in second on 872 while Veronica Wong took third with 831. The top 27 bowlers with the defending champion, Lai Kin Ngoh of Malaysia will qualify for the Masters finals.
