Singles gold for Shah Alam, Jurong and Taichung, Jeju

10th January, Taichung: Shah Alam's Faten Najihah Ahmad Faik and Jurong's Jeremy Yeo came away with the gold in the Women's and Men's Singles finals of the 35th Asian Intercity Bowling Championships whilst Jeju's Yang Young-Ja and Taichung's Chen Meng Song won the Women's Senior and Men's Senior gold medals.

Faten Najihah captured her second gold medal of the championships after narrowly beating team-mate, Zatil Iman Abd Ghani, 191-190 in the all-Shah Alam Women's Singles final match. The national bowler had earlier dispatched fourth-seed, Nura Zulkifli of Singapore, 254-204 to advance to the gold medal final.

Zatil, who added a silver medal for Shah Alam, thrashed third-seed, Wang Ting Wen of Taichung, 238-180 to set up the final match with the topseed. Yang Young-Ja gave Jeju their first gold medal of the championships with a 199-172 victory in the Women's Senior Singles final over second-seed, Datin Rakiah Ali.

The fourth-seed Korean eliminated topseed, Zarina Halim of Kuala Lumpur 191-157 in the semi-finals to advance to the gold medal match. Datin Rakiah, who lost to Zarina in a one-ball roll-off to break the for top spot in the semi-finals, dispatched Jude Khadijah of Kuala Lumpur, 201-142 in the other semi.

Meanwhile third-seed, Jeremy Yeo defeated top-seed, Jeremiah Camacho of Tamuning, Guam, 206-161 in the final to earn the Men's Singles gold medal for Jurong city, Singapore. Yeo ousted team-mate, Jayden See 225-204 in the all-Singapore semi-finals.

Camacho elimiated perfect gamer, Syed Muhammad Hafiz of Petaling Jaya, 257-212 in the other semi but failed to repeat his form at the crucial final. There was no doubt that beating top-seed, Chen Meng Song of Taichung was an easy task as Zaba Bin Othman of Shah Alam found out.

Chen easily defeated Zaba, 214-170 to win the Men's Senior Singles gold medal for host city, Taichung. The champion was equally impressive having taken out fellow-countrymen, Ma Ying-Hao, 227-183 in the all-Taiwanese semi-finals.

Zaba easily beat third-seed, Gene Anthony Basa of Paranaque city, Philippines 192-156 to square off with Chen in the final match. Mr Joey Miranda III, Executive Secretary of AIBC and Mr Chang Chin Tsan, President of Taichung Bowling Association were on hand to present the medals and mascots to the medalists.

The Women's and Women's Senior Doubles two sqauds will be contested today and the top 4 Women's pair and top 4 Women's Senior pairs will qualify for the medal rounds shootout. The first Men's and Men's Senior Doubles will follow thereafter.
