25th October, Shah Alam: The 36th Asian Intercity Bowling Championship, hosted by Shah Alam, Malaysia, was officially declared open by Guest of Honor, YBhg. Dato' Haji Mohd Fauzi Bin Haji Mohd Yatim, Datuk Bandar (Mayor) of Shah Alam City on Friday.

Sixteen member cities of the Asian Intercity Bowling Council (AIBC) along with guest city, Seria from Brunei and host, will be vying for glory at the 36th edition of the immensely popular and friendly bowling championship at Alam Lanes, AEON Mall, Shah Alam.

Bandar Seri Begawan, Beliat and guest city, Seria from Brunei, Hong Kong, Kowloon and New Territories from Hong Kong, China, Jeju and Seong Nam from Korea, Kuching, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Petaling Jaya from Malaysia, Paranaque and Pasay from the Philippines, Singapore, Tamuning from Guam and host, Shah Alam from Malaysia with two full teams.

The emcee, Ms Michelle Wong, Executive Board Member of AIBC, kicked off the ceremony with the introduction of the Guest of Honor, and distinguished guests, YAD. Dato Haji Emran Bin Haji Kadir, Dato' Orang Kaya Bijaya Petaling and Orang Besar Daerah Petaling, Mr Johnson Cheng, President of AIBC, Mr Richard Lai, First Vice President of AIBC and Mr James Dela Cruz, Second Vice President of AIBC.

Also introduced were Tuan Haji Madiyan Bin Baweh, Pemangku Timbalan Dato Bandar, En. Mohd Azhar Bin Mohd Sharif, Pengarah Jabatan Korporat & Perhubungan Awam as well as AIBC Executive Board Members, Mr Mohd Farid Khalid, Mr Leon Lim and Ms Michelle Wong. All guests rose to the playing of the Selangor State Anthem after which, eighteen participating teams marchpast in front of the distinguished guests.

Mr Cheng, on behalf of AIBC, delivered his welcoming speech during which he expressed his sincere gratitude to the city of Shah Alam in coming forward to hosting this year's championship. He also thanked the participating cities for continuously supporting the championship for so many years.

Mr Miranda went through the championship schedule highlighting the opening ceremony, official practice and the closing ceremony. With the help of Mr Mervyn Foo, AIBC Executive Board Member, lane draws were conducted for the Singles, Doubles and Team events.

The Jury of Appeal comprise of Mr Richard Lai, Mr Mohd Farid Khalid and Mr James Dela Cruz. The official practice is divided into four squads of one hour each starting at 9.00 am local time on October 25. An official opening ceremony will be held at 5.00 pm at Alam Lanes followed by a welcome dinner at MBSA Convention Center at 8.00 pm.

Competition will kick off with the Singles preliminaries on October 26 and 27, with each division (Men, Women, Senior Men and Senior Women) split into two squads. The top 4 with the highest score (4 games) will proceed to the medal rounds.

The Doubles preliminaries will be contested on October 28 and 29, split into two squads and again the top 4 pairs will proceed to the medal rounds. The Team of Four (3 games) will be staged on October 29 with the medal rounds for the top 4 teams on October 30.

En. Muhammad Azizi Naim Jabar and Cik Faten Najihah Ahmad Faik from Team Shah Alam A, took the athlete oath on behalf of all participants while En. Yusuf Abdul Raof took the oath on behalf of all tournament officials.

The Guest of Honor, YBhg. Dato' Haji Mohd Fauzi Bin Haji Mohd Yatim then officially declared the championship open by rolling the first ball of the competition joined by Mr Johnson Cheng and YAD. Dato Haji Emran Bin Haji Kadir.

Souvenirs were exchanged between the Guest of Honor and the President of AIBC before each team was introduced to Datuk Bandar. He also presented souvenirs to each of the participating teams. A group photo was taken before the opening ceremony ended.

All guests and teams were invited to a welcome dinner hosted by Majlis Perbandaran Shah Alam (MBSA) at the MBSA Convention Center. The championships consist of Singles, Doubles, Team of Four and the Masters Finals. Four divisions - Men, Women, Senior Men and Senior Women will contest the three events over the next four days.

The top 16 players from each division based on the All Events standings (11 games from Singles, Doubles and Team events) will qualify for the elimination rounds of the Masters finals to be played over best-of-three head-to-head knockout matches.

The Men's team winner, Women's team winner and the Overall Champion City based on the medal standings will be awarded the Men's Seotopo Cup, Women's Seotopo Cup and the Overall Seotopo Cup at the Victory Banquet on October 31.
