Filipino, Singaporean takes over top spot

31st July, Bangkok: John Paul Macatula of Philippines topped Squad D en-route to taking over top spot of the Men's Open first block qualifying rounds at the 48th MWA-Thailand International Open Bowling Championships while Squad C leader, Bernice Lim of Singapore led the Women's division.

Malaysia had dominated the opening squad with Ahmad Muaz leading with a five-game total of 1168 followed by 2022 Thailand Open first runner-up, Rafiq Ismail in second with 1160 and Ryan Lalisang of Jawa Timur, Indonesia third with 1146.

In the second squad, two-time Thailand Open champion, Annop Arromsaranon topped the pack with 1065 but ended up third in the local pool. Supakrit Wantasuk occupied top local spot with 1119 followed by Yannaphon Larpapharat in second with 1076.

The third squad saw John Paul Macatula of the Philippines setting the lanes on fire with 261 and 299 in his first two games for the lead. The Filipino went on to cruise to a comfortable lead with 1200 which propelled him to the top of the standings after three squads pushing the two Malaysians into second and third.

The fourth and final squad of the first block saw Singapore's Xavier Teo winning the squad with 1162 but was unable to topple Macatula and Muaz. He has however, earned a bye if he remains in third. Rafiq and Lalisang slipped down to seventh and eighth overall.

Meanwhile in the Women's division, Bernice Lim of Singapore topped the final squad of the day with 1122 to take up top overseas pool spot. Squad A leader Alyaa Addini Zulamri of Malaysia and Nora Lyana Nastasia occupied second and third with 1099 and 1087 respectively.

2024 World Youth Singles gold medalist, Arianne Tay of Singapore, who finished second to her compatriot in the final squad settled for seventh overall with 1071. Gillian Lim slipped behind Tay in eighth. Nadia Pramanik of Sumatra Utara, Indonesia, who topped Squad D with 998, is the cut in 20th position.

Thanakorn Wutti, 2023 Women's champion, Ramita Sarntong and Wassana Sakulrat took up the top 3 local qualifying spots with 968, 955 and 938 respectively.

The bowlers will resume their second block of five games tomorrow and a final third block on Friday, August 2. The top 3 local and the top 3 overseas qualifiers in both the Women's and Men's divisions will earn a bye and skip Round 2 finals.

The top 14 Women finishers positioned 7 to 20 in the Mixed pool will qualify for Round 2 finals while the top 24 Men finishers positioned 7 to 30 in the Mixed pool will also qualify for Round 2 finals. They will be joined by the top 4 finishers in the Women's Desperado squad and top 8 finishers in the Men's Desperado squad.

The top 9 women with the highest pinfalls in Round 2 and the top 18 men with the highest pinfalls in Round 2 will advance to Round 3 along with the top 6 seeded Women and Men qualifiers from the general qualifying standings for another 6 games.

The top 6 women and top 6 men at the end of Round 3 will proceed to the Stepladder Shootout finals on August 3. The Women's champion will pocket the top prize of 130,000 Thai baht (approx. US$3,360) while the Men's champion will earn 350,000 Thai baht (approx. US$9,700) top prize.
