Singapore bags sixth gold, Korea wins first

27th August, Petaling Jaya: Third-seed, Mike Ong Jing Loong bagged Singapore sixth gold of the 22nd Asian Youth Tenpin Bowling Championships with victory in the Boy's Masters stepladder final match while Paek Ye Dam gave Korea their first gold medal in the Girl's division.

Ong narrowly defeated top-seed, Fumine Suda, 248-246 in the first of two-matches total pinfall Masters stepladder title match by just two pins. In the second match, the Japanese failed to make his three-pin spare in his second frame and felled a further 22 pins away as the Singaporean rolled three consecutive strikes from the second frame.

Suda recovered with three strikes-in-a-row after sparing his third frame to narrow the gap. Ong could not add more strikes but made sure he picked up all his spares.

The Japanese struck in the ninth frame and needed another double in the tenth frame to have any chance to snatching victory but managed to only spare his final frame to end with 203. Ong marked all his remaining frames to finish with 216 for a 464-449 victory.

The champion, had earlier edged second-seed, Shin Ji Ho of Korea, 202-198 in the semi-finals match to face Suda in the title match. Ong's win gave Singapore their sixth gold medal of the championships and a second for the boy's division. Aiman Raedyn Lim Jen won their first gold in the Singles event on the opening day.

Suda had earlier topped the second block Masters finals with 3768 from six wins. Shin finished second with 3651 from five wins and Ong made the cut for the stepladder finals in third with 3636 from four wins and a draw.

In the girl's division, top-seed and Singles silver medalist, Paek Ye Dam easily defeated team-mate, 454-373 in the all-Korean final to win their first gold medal of the championships. Lee, who added Korea's seventh silver medal, had earlier ousted second-seed, Shirlene Wong Xue Lin of Singapore, 201-162 to face her compatriot in the final.

Paek, who was fifth in the first block, finished the second block in the lead with 3490 from six wins and earning top-seed for the stepladder finals. Wong took second position with 3474 from just three wins while Lee Da Eun, who topped the first block, squeezed into the stepladder finals win third with 3473 from five wins.

Singapore emerged as girls division champion with a medal haul of 4-1-1. Korea finished second with 1-4-1 and Malaysia third with just two bronze medals. Kuwait took the boys division title with a medal haul of 2-1-0 from the Team of 4, the All-Events and a silver in the Doubles.

Singapore took top honours and emerged as overall champion with their best-ever Asian Youth outing with a medal haul of 6-1-1. Kuwait finished second and Korea took third spot.

Yang Berusaha, En. Ku Mustafa Ku Mohammad representing the Mayor of Petaling Jaya City presented the overall champion trophy to Singapore while Dato' Mohammad Najeeb Abdullah, President of MTBC assisted by his two Vice Presidents, gave away the Girls and Boys champions trophies.

The Most Popular Male athlete award, voted by all players, went to two gold medalist, Hassan Qasem of Kuwait while Hazel Tan Wei Ning was awarded the Most Popular Female athlete. 56 boys, 32 girls and 38 officials participated in the 22nd addition of the Asian Youth Tenpin Bowling Championships from August 20 to 27, 2025.
