Malaysian teenage sensation, Mohd Nadri captures Santa Claus title

6th November, Singapore: 18 year-old Malaysian teenage sensation, Mohd Nadri won his first-ever international title by capturing the Santa Claus Open title defeating teammate, Shalin Zulkifli at Victor's Superbowl this afternoon.

The 6th Asian Schools triple Gold medalist and a new member of the Malaysian national squad forced top-seed and three times Asian No. 1 Bowler, Shalin Zulkifli into a sudden-death final game after taking the first game 210-181.

In the final game, Nadri kept up his onslaught to topple his more experience compatriot 224-213 for a well deserved win.

Shalin settled for second despite topping the semifinals with a score of 2281. She took home S$7,500 for her effort. Nadri, who completed the semifinals in third spot, ousted another youngster, 16 year-old Korean Choi Bok-Eum in the first stepladder match 255-204 before the capturing the title and the top prize of S$15,000. Choi finished third and won for himself S$4,000.

World Championship Doubles Gold medalist, Kirsten Penny just missed the stepladder finals by 5 pins to end up in fourth place with 2240 followed by Finland's Pasi Marjamaki took fifth spot on 2205. Malaysia's spinner, Tang Joh Six did well to finish 6th with 2202 ahead of 2002 ABT Hong Kong leg champion, Hiroko Shimizu from Japan in 7th place on 2196 total.

Malaysia's Azidi Ameran fought on well to take 8th place with 2183 ahead of local favourite and ABT Singapore Ranking leg champion, Remy Ong in 9th place on 2178. Chinese Taipei's Chen Hsiu Lan rounded up the top 10 with 2173.

Taiwanese Ku Ching Ho failed to maintain his form in the preliminary rounds to finish a disappointing 42nd while Singapore Open women's champion, Evelyn Chan finished 45th place.

A total of 91 bowlers from 14 countries took part in this year's Santa Claus Open. Bowlers who finished 23rd to 30th positions received S$550 each.

Sam Goh hits perfect game as Ku Ching Ho tops the field

5th November, Singapore: Singapore's Sam Goh scored a perfect game in the third block of the Santa Claus Open at Victor's Superbowl as Taipei's Ku Ching Ho led the field of 45 bowlers into the semifinals.

The 34 year-old led in all the three block of 10 games each and will now moved into the semifinals with the top 45 qualifiers for another 10 games from scratch.

Ku scored 2066 in his final block to amassed a total of 6417 and 48 pins ahead of fellow countryman, Kao Hai Yuan in second on 6369. Kao shot to second spot from 8th position after scoring 2180 pushing down Singapore's Jennifer Tan into third.

Three times Asian No. bowler, Shalin Zulkifli notched up another two places from 6th yesterday to 4th with 6348 with teammate, Mohd Nadri in 5th with 6334. The 18 year-old member of the Malaysian national squad recorded the highest 10 games total today on 2296 averaging 229.6.

As the urgency to make the cut for the semifinals heated up, a fair number of bowlers came close to hitting the perfect game. Finland's Pasi Marjamaki and Malaysia's Mohd Nadri (twice) recorded seven strikes-in-a-row but missed the opportunity. The ladies, Chieu Hsiu Lan from Chinese Taipei, Sarah Yap from Malaysia and Hiroko Simizu from Japan too had missed their chances.

Eventually, it was Singapore's Sam Goh who got the magic number hitting the perfect game to win the S$5,000 prize for his achievement. The perfect game also helped the four-times SEA Games Gold medalist, Sam to just make the cut in 45th place.

block belonged to the hook-ball bowlers. Out of 45 qualifiers, there were 14 Taiwanese spinners, three from Singapore, one from Thailand and one from Malaysia. Among the notable non-spinning qualifiers were ABT Singapore Ranking leg, Remy Ong (6th-6298), Indonesia's Ryan Lalisang (9th-6247), 2002 ABT Grand Slam champion Purvis Granger (10th-6247), 16 year-old Korean sensation Choi Bok-Eum (11th-6241) and ex-international Jack Wong (14th-6205).

Also making the cut were ABT Singapore Ranking leg women champion Kim Eun Jung (15th-6173), ABT Malaysia leg champion, Azidi Ameran (16th-6172), 36th Singapore Open women champion Evelyn Chan (21st-6111), World Championship Doubles Gold medalist Kirsten Penny (22nd-6107) and ABT Indonesia leg champion Wu Siu Hong (23rd-6084).

The top 45 bowlers will proceed to the semifinals on tomorrow, Thursday 6th November starting from scratch. The top 3 at the end of the semifinals will make the cut for the stepladder finals and a chance to win the top prize of S$15,000.

Ku Ching Ho maintains lead after two blocks

4th November, Singapore: Chinese Taipei's Ku Ching Ho maintained his lead in the Santa Claus Open at Victor's Superbowl after two blocks ahead of two Singaporeans, Jennifer Tan in second and Jeremy Fang in third.

The first block leader extended his lead from 18 pins to 57 pins over second-placed Jennifer Tan of Singapore after scoring 2153 in second block giving him a two block total of 4351. 2002 World Ranking Masters champion, Jennifer Tan settled for second and keeping in touch with the leader on 4294 total. Singapore's Jeremy Fang moved up to third spot from 7th yesterday with a superb 2198 in this block on a total of 4272.

Taiwanese, Chen Hsiu Lan improved from 6th to 4th with 4271 pushing down Wang Tien Fu from 3rd to 5th while 3 times Asian No. 1 bowler, Shalin Zulkifli found her form to jump from 16th position to 6th on 4239 total.

The next 4 places were all taken up by Chinese Taipei bowlers with Pan Yu Fen (4206), Kao Hai Yuan (4189), Chu Yu Chieh (4173) and Huang Chiung Yao (4135) in 7th to 10th positions respectively.

Singapore Open champion, Dino Castillo who took part in the championship pulled out after suffering a slight injury after four games while the Women Masters champion, Evelyn Chan improved slightly but only in 21st place with a score of 4053. ABT Singapore Ranking Leg men's and defending champion, Remy Ong finished poorly in 23rd position with 4041.

Stars competiting in the tournament are 2002 ABT Grand Slam champion Purvis Granger (12th-4113), Sinai Open champion, Kirsten Penny (16th-4088), 2002 ABT Hong Kong Leg champion Hiroko Shimizu (28th-4016), ABT Singapore Ranking Leg women's champion Kim Eun Jung (30th-4014), ABT Malaysian Leg champion Azidi Ameran (33rd-3977), two times Singapore Open champion Wendy Chai (37th-3963) and ABT Indonesia Leg champion Wu Siu Hong (38th-3960).

The participants will continue their third and final block of 10 games on Wednesday, 5th November. The top 45 bowlers at the end of the 30 games will proceed to the semifinals on Thursday 6th November. The top 3 at the end of the semifinals will make the cut for the stepladder finals.

Ku Ching Ho leads after first block

3rd November, Singapore: Chinese Taipei's Ku Ching Ho lead a field of world-class bowlers with a score of 2189 after the first block of 10 games of the Santa Claus Open at Victor's Superbowl ahead of Singapore's Jennifer Tan in second and Wang Tien Fu in third.

The 34 year-old Ku, who represented Chinese Taipei in the World Championship in September scored a total of 2189 for an impressive average of 218.9. He was ahead of 2002 World Ranking Masters champion, Jennifer Tan of Singapore by 18 pins. Jennifer, the runnerup of the AVIVA ABT Singapore Ranking Leg, scored 2180 including her 80 pins handicap to finish second. In third place came another Taiwanese, Wang Tien Fu who downed 2165 with Singapore's Lim Zhong in 4th spot with 2130. 16 year-old Choi Bok-Eum from Korea gave his more senior and experienced bowlers a run for their money when the youngster took 5th spot with 2105.

Chien Hsiu Lan (TPE-2105), Jeremy Fang (SIN-2074), Cheng Chao Sheng (TPE-2066), Chen Lin Yi (TPE-2065) and Tang Joh Six (MAS-2053) finished 6th to 10th respectively.

Other notable stars competiting in the tournament were Sinai Open champion, Kirsten Penny (12th-2044), Shalin Zulkifli (16th-2008), ABT 2002 Grand Slam champion Purvis granger (21st-1992), ABT Indonesia Leg champion Wu Siu Hong (22nd-1982) and ABT Singapore Ranking Leg women's champion Kim Eun Jung (36th-1932).

The participants will continue their second block of 10 games with their score carried forward on Wednesday 5th November and the third and final block on Thursday, 6th November. The top 45 bowlers at the end of the 30 games will proceed to the semifinals on Friday 7th November. The top 3 at the end of the semifinals will make the cut for the stepladder finals.
