26th September, Bangkok: Four-time TV finalist, Ryan Ciminelli of Lancaster, S.C., became the only qualifier to register three 700-series to move into the lead of the qualifying standings at the 2019 PBA-WBT World Bowling Tour Thailand.
The 33-year-old left-haner, who won his eighth tour title with victory in the Gene Carter Pro Shop Open, downed 766, 720 and 712 to lead the standings with a stunning 2198. Ciminelli made four TV appearances at the Thailand tour 2011, 2012, 2104 and 2017 finishing as first runner-up to Osku Palermaa in 2014.
Overnight leader, Darren Tang of Las Vegas, Nev., settled for second with 2185 while leader two days ago, Dominic Barrett of England slipped one more place down to third with 2180. 2014 winner, Palermaa occupied fourth spot with 2157.
2015 World Women's Championships Team gold, All Events and Masters silver medallist, Liz Johnson of USA rolled the highest 700 series of 785 to leapfrog into fifth with 2133. Singapore's Cheah Ray Han notched up 743 and 699 to take up sixth position with 2131.
PBA Hall of Famer, Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Texas kept improving his total to take up seventh position with 2122 and earning the two byes for Round 4 finals together with the top six qualifiers. Kim Bolleby remained the top Thai with 2087 to join the top seven in Round 4 finals while 2017 winner, Yannaphon Larpapharat settled for Round 3 finals with 2041 in ninth position reserved for a Thai not in the top bracket.
Two-time TV finalist and winner of the PBA Bear Open for his seventh career title, Anthony Simonsen headed the second bracket with 2119 in tenth position while the cut for Round 3 finals in 24th position went to Singapore's Remy Ong with 2030.
Hong Kong's Wu Siu Hong, who tied with Ong, headed the third bracket and if there is no qualifier knocking the Singaporean off 24th, a one-ball roll-off with Wu may have to decide who earns the bye. Current cut in 33rd position went to Francois Lavoie of Canada on 2015.
Positions 34 to 37 reserved for female qualifiers not in the top 32 were Jazreel Tan (SGP-1995), Bryanna Cote (USA-1974), Alexis Sy (PHI-1959) and Tannya Roumimper (INA-1953) will qualify for Round 2 finals.
There were a total of 13 big scorers in the first three squads this morning. Chong Jun Foo (MAS-713), Ryan Ciminelli (USA-712), Nathan Bohr (USA-707), Shota Kawazoe (JPN-705), Ryan Lalisang (INA-704), Marshall Kent (USA-731), Kamron Doyle (USA-723), Tommy Jones (USA-719), Pontus Andersson (SWE-715), Liz Johnson (USA-785), Cheah Ray Han (SGP-743), Danielle McEwan (USA-737) and Anthony Simonsen (USA-705).
There are four squads remaining at press time and the rush to make the cut will be heated up. The cut could well reach 230 or over by the end of the last squad tonight at 23:30hrs. A one-game desperado squad to be staged to add three more qualifiers.
