Tim Mack, Kirsten Penny captures 1st Indonesia Open titles

11th October, Jakarta: Tim Mack of USA and Kirsten Penny captured the 1st Indonesia International Open Open Masters titles which ended today at Jaya Ancol Bowl this evening.

The World Championship Trios Gold and Masters Silver medalist defeated 5th-seed and challenger Wu Siu Hong from Hong Kong in a single match 255-222 to take his third Asian title this year.

Tim Mack, who completed the 2 blocks of 16 games, finished top-seed with a total score of 3581 going into the stepladder finals. There was no stopping the American and his experience gave him the edge over runner-up Wu Siu Hong, who settled for second.

In the first stepladder match amongst 6th seed Alex Liew (MAS-3425), 5th seed Wu Siu Hong (HKG-3438) and 4th seed Lenny Lim (SIN-3459), Wu outclassed his opponents to take the match 223 against Lenny's 190 and Alex's 189.

The 19 year-old Wu and winner of the AVIVA ABT 2002 Hong Kong leg went on to knock out 2nd seed Nadri Mohd Noor (MAS-3498) and 3rd seed Pasi Marjamaki (FIN-3474) with a score of 224 to both bowler's 182.

Ryan Lalisang (INA-3409), Biboy Rivera (PHI-3407), Andrew Frawley (AUS-3404), Joonee Gatchalian (INA-3392), Chester King (PHI-3362), Purvis Granger (PHI-3337), Frans Tjandra (INA-3333), Yannaphon L (THA-3319), David Sitorus (INA-3316) and Annop Arromsaranon (3306) all made the cut for the AVIVA ABT Indonesia Leg from 7th to 16th. Sitorus and Annop A finished 15 and 16th but because Tim Mack and Pasi Marjamaki are not an Asian-based bowler, the two place was taken up by the 15th and 16th-placed finishers.


In the women's division, World Championship Doubles Gold medalist, Kirsten Penny from England defeated Malaysia's Choy Poh Lai 234-203 to win her third Asian title this year. The 26 year-old top bowler from Europe who took the 29th Thailand Open and the 2nd Kingdom of Bahrain Open has added another title to her impressive collect of success in the Asian circuit.

Poh Lai was perhaps happy to come off second especially after finishing 6th after the 2nd block finals and winning both the first and the second stepladder matches.

She ousted 5th seed Lai Kin Ngoh and 4th seed Lily Suhaimi of Indonesia with a score of 211 and then knocked out 2nd seed Wendy Chai and 3rd seed Liza del Rosario with another fine display scoring 238. Wendy Chai settled for third after a score of 226 while Liza took 4th spot.

Jennifer Tan (SIN-3312), Alice Tay (SIN-3283), Sarah Yap (MAS-3226), Michelle Kwang (SIN-3218), Vanessa Fung (HKG-3209), Putty Armein (INA-3192), Sharon Chai (MAS-3190), Ivana Hanjaya (INA-3164) and Happy Soediyono (INA-3128) also made the cut for the ABT Indonesia Leg from 7th to 15th. Soediyono also made the cut because the champion, Kirsten Penny is a non-Asian bowler.

The top 14 from each division will battle it out in the AVIVA ABT Indonesia Leg on the 12th and 13th October at the Jaya Ancol Bowl.

Malaysia's Nadri Mohd Noor tops Men's Open 1st block finals

10th October, Jakarta: 6th Asian Schools Triple Gold medalist, Nadri Mohd Noor topped the Men's Open Masters first block finals of the 1st Indonesia International Open at Jaya Ancol Bowl this evening.

The 18 year-old amassed a total score of 1780 over the first block of 8 games to lead a field of 36 Men's Open Masters finalist into tomorrow's second block.

Nadri, winner of the 6th Asian Schools Singles, Doubles and Team event in April was just 15 pins ahead of World Youth Singles Gold medalist, Yannaphon L. from Thailand who total 1765. Another 3 pins away came top qualifier, Andrew Frawley from Australia with 1762. Fourth place went to local bowler, Ryan Lalisang on 1727 pinfalls.

Singapore's youngster, Lenny Lim was 5th with 1718 while AVIVA ABT 2002 Hong Kong leg champion, Chester King of the Philippines finished 6th with 1717.

RJ Bautista (PHI-1713), World Championship Doubles Gold medalist Tim Mack (USA-1713), Wu Siu Hong (HKG-1708) and Frans Tjandra (INA-1704) completed the top 10 from 7th - 10th spots.

Meanwhile, local bowlers finished 1-2-3 in the Women's Graded B division played after the Open Masters finals. Erna Lindawati scored 2296 to take the title from Shalima Z. who scored 2210 while Widianingsih settled for 3rd place with 2181.

The Women and Men Open division will bowl another 8 games in the 2nd block tomorrow (11th October). The top 6 from each division will make the cut for the stepladder finals. At the same time, the top 14 Asian men and women from the Masters finals will qualify for the AVIVA Asian Bowling Tour Indonesia leg which will be played on the 12th and 13th October.

Kirsten Penny leads Women's Open Masters first block finals

10th October, Jakarta: World Championship Doubles Gold medalist, Kirsten Penny from England finished strongly to lead of the Women's Open Masters first block finals of the 1st Indonesia International Open at Jaya Ancol Bowl.

The 26 year-old started poorly with 184 but picked up her game with 217, 225, 267, 243, 268, 227 and 235 for a total of 1866 to average an impressive 233.25.

Kirsten, who already has won two titles in Asia this year, will be hoping to add another one especially after a fine showing in the World Championship in Kuala Lumpur last month.

Fresh from winning the Team Gold medal in the World Championship, Malaysia's Wendy Chai and Lai Kin Ngoh put up a good showing to take 2nd anf 3rd spots with 1810 and 1753 respectively. Wendy, twice winner of the Singapore International Open, only trailed the leader by 56 pins after the first block of 8 games and will be hoping to end her Indonesia Open debut on a high for the Singapore Open title which she will defend next month.

World Championship Trios Gold medalist and Filipino lass, Liza del Rosario (1727) and Malaysia's Choy Poh Lai (1700) finished in the top 5 in 4th and 5th positions.

Meanwhile, local veteran Rudy King who also made the Men's Open Masters finals, bagged the Senior title played last night. Rudy scored 2080 to snatch the title from Aswin L. by just 9 pins. Bambang S., also from Indonesia finished 3rd with 1981.

Thailand's Somjed K. captured the Junior Boy's title with a score of 2202 ahead of local youth, Calvin Kamil on 2164 followed by another Thai, Peerawut Wongthongsiri in 3rd with 2130. Top local Junior girl, Putty Armein scored an easy win in the Junior Girl's division with 1973 with Shalima Z. in 2nd with 1953 and Ivana Hanjaya in 3rd with 1951.

The top 36 men is bowling their first block Masters finals at press time. Both the women and men will continue their 2nd block of 8 games tomorrow (11th October).

Alice Tay, Andrew Frawley takes over lead

9th October, Jakarta: Singapore's Alice Tay and Australia's Andrew Frawley took over the lead of the Women's and Men's Open Masters qualifying table in the 1st Indonesia International Open on the final day of qualifying.

The 31 year-old 2003 Singapore National champion and winner of the 2001 Cathay Bowl Super Classic, scored 920 to pip World Championship Doubles Gold medalist, Kirsten Penny from England.

AVIVA ABT 2001 Hong Kong leg champion, Vanessa Fung moved up to third with 875 pushing early leader, Sharon Chai (871) from Malaysia one spot further to 4th.

SEA Games Masters Gold medalist, Lai Kin Ngoh (866) came next in 5th just 1 pin ahead of World Championship Trios Gold medalist, Liza del Rosario (865) from the Philippines in 6th. Malaysian Wendy Chai and Choy Poh Lai shared 7th positions with 857.

There is no change n the local front with Happy Soediyono, Putty Armein, Lily Gunawan and Novie Phang occupying the top 4 seeded qualifiers positions. Sheanny Gunawan scored an impressive 865 to take up 4th spot followed by Ivana Hanjaya with 844 in 5th. Ivana Hanjaya (844), Jessah M (814) and Inge Y (806) finished 6th to 8th respectively.

Meanwhile, Australia's Andrew Frawley fired 1014 to take over the lead followed by the Malaysian youngster Nadri Mohd Noor. The 6th Asian Schools triple Gold medalist downed 1011 to take up 2nd spot. Overnight leader, Daniel Yiu of Hong Kong was relegated to 3rd on 1002.

Fourth position went to World Youth Singles Gold medalist, Yannaphon L. from Thailand with a score of 998 with another youngster from Malaysia, Eric Ang in 5th with 994.

Another 6th Asian Schools triple Gold medalist and member of the World Tenpin Team Cup champion, Jonathan Lim shot 992 to secure himself a berth in tomorrow's Finals with lines of 247, 210, 259 and 276 for 6th place joined by Alex Liew (MAS-991), Pasi Marjamaki (FIN-984), Wu Siu Hong (HKG-982), Frankie Cheung (HKG-978), Tom Hahl (SIN-972) and Tim Mack (USA-965).

Kirsten storms to the lead, S.Sageran scores perfect game

8th October, Jakarta: World Championship Doubles Gold medalist, Kirsten Penny from England stormed into the lead of the Women's Open Masters qualifying table of the 1st Indonesia International Open while Singapore's Sandra Sageran scored the first perfect game.

The 26 year-old Kirsten, who captured the 29th Thailand Open and the 2nd Kingdom of Bahrain International Open, scored 913 to take over the lead from overnight leader, Sharon Chai of Malaysia on 871.

SEA Games Masters and World Championship Team Gold medalist, Lai Kin Ngoh was pushed down to third with 866 while Philippines Open Masters champion and World Championship Trios Gold medalist, Liza del Rosario took 4th spot with 865.

The Malaysian women Wendy Chai (857), Sarah Yap (852), Choy Poh Lai (830) and Elaine Lam (826) occupied the remaining of four places in the overseas pool from 5th to 8th places.

There is no change n the local front with Happy Soediyono, Putty Armein, Lily Gunawan and Novie Phang occupying the top 4 seeded qualifiers positions. Meanwhile, there is not much changes in the men's overseas pool with Daniel Yiu from Hong Kong still in top spot with 1002 scored yesterday. Second and third spots were occupied by Malaysia's Eric Ang (994) and Alex Liew (991).

In 4th position was 29th Thailand Open Masters champion, Annop Arromsaranon (981) with Tom Hahl (972) from Singapore in 5th. World Championship Trios Gold and Masters Silver medalist, Tim Mack was in a lowly 11th spot and will sure try to improve further tomorrow.

Singapore's Sandra Sageran became the first bowler to score a perfect game of the championship in his qualifying round this afternoon. Despite scoring the magical 300, Sageran just managed to qualify in the last spot of the mixed pool.

Daniel Yiu, Sharon Chai maintains lead

7th October, Jakarta: Hong Kong's Daniel Yiu and Malaysia's Sharon Chai maintained their lead in the Men's and Women's Open Masters qualifying table of the 1st Indonesia International Open at Jaya Ancol Bowling.

The newcomer from Hong Kong scored 1002 yesterday to take the lead in the Men's Open Masters overseas pool and is maintaining his lead with two more days of qualifying.

6th Asian Schools Team Gold medalist, Eric Ang from Malaysia kept his second spot with 994 just three pins from his teammate, Alex Liew who downed 991 for third place.

18 year-old 29th Thailand Open champion, Annop Arromsaranon took 4th spot with 981 followed by Filipino Joonee G who scored 935 while AVIVA ABT Grand Slam and 32nd Philippines Open champion, Purvis Granger was 5th with 934.

In close second was Sharon's teammate and SEA Games Masters Gold medalist, Lai Kin Ngoh just 5 pins away while Philippines Open Masters champion and World Championship Trios Gold medalist, Liza del Rosario was third with 865.

Sharon Chai, Daniel Yiu takes pole positions

6th October, Jakarta: Malaysia's Sharon Chai and Hong Kong's Daniel Yiu took pole positions of the Women's and Men's Open Masters qualifying table of the 1st Indonesia International Open underway at Jaya Ancol Bowling.

The 20 year-old immediately took to the lead in the Women's overseas pool with a score of 871. She had lines of 248, 184, 194 and 245 to average 217.75.

Malaysian women occupied the top four positions when Lai Kin Ngoh took second place with 866 followed by Wendy Chai in 3rd spot with 857 and Elaine Lam in 4th spot with 826. World Ranking Masters Champion 2002, Jennifer Tan of Singapore took 5th position with 824 follow by Malaysia's Choy Poh Lai in 6th with 820.

Singapore's Alice Tay and Michelle Kwang rounded up the top 8 spots in 7th and 8th respectively.

In the local front, Happy Soediyono, Putty Armein, Lily Gunawan and Novie Phang are top 4 seeded qualifiers. Sheanny Gunawan topped the table with an impressive 865 to take up fourth spot followed by Ivana Hanjaya with 844. Jessah M and Inge Y finished 7th and 8th respectively with 814 and 806.

In the Men's division, 6th Asian Schools Team Gold medalist, Eric Ang justified his inclusion in the Malaysian squad for the Indonesia Open by finishing second to Hong Kong's Daniel Yiu with 994. Daniel lead the overseas pool with a score of 1002 pinfalls. Eric's teammate, Alex Liew took 3rd spot with 991 followed by newcomer, Reese Young III from Hong Kong in 4th with 931.

The top 6 local seeded automatic qualifiers were Rudy King, Yuyu, Ryan Lalisang, Erry Arsyad, Igan Alit and Wandy while Freddy Is took up 7th spot with 903. Frans Tjandra (896), Rudy Gunawan (894) and Thomas Tan (890) rounded up the top 10 positions respectively.

Local bowlers head 1st Indonesia International Open

5th October, Jakarta: Local bowlers, Happy Soediyono and Rudy King head a list of seeded qualifiers in the 1st Indonesia International Open underway at Jaya Ancol Bowling.

The 28 year-old University graduate, who finished 1st runner-up in the AVIVA Asian Bowling Tour Thailand leg in May and 1st runner-up in the Philippines International Open in June this year, heads a field of local bowlers hoping to do well with home crowd support.

Soediyono is top-seeded amongst the five local women bowlers assured of a place in the Masters finals. Joining her is Putty Armein, who participated in the 15th World Tenpin Bowling Championship in Kuala Lumpur last month, Lily Gunawan, Novie Phang and Sheanny Gunawan, qualfier of the AVIVA ABT Malaysia leg in March.

Lani Sardadi scored 804 to take up 6th spot, followed by Sarinah Djaja with 773 while Tan Bie Sian is 8th with 733.

The overseas bowlers will be arriving Jakarta from today onwards and will surely be snaping up the 8 places in the overseas pool and 8 places in the mixed pool. Yenny M occupies the top spot in the mixed pool and 17th overall with 686 and Jessah M S in second with 606.

Meanwhile, local newcomer, Rudy King tops the five local seeded qualifiers ahead of Yuyu, Ryan Lalisang, Erry Arsyad and Igan Alit. Lalisang, the 23 year-old student who is easily one of the top bowlers to emerge from Indonesia, has done well in many international tournaments he participated since taking up the game 12 years ago. Winner of 2 Gold medals in the 1998 Asian Schools championship, 1st runner-up in the Singapore Junior Classic and a Bronze medalist in the 1999 SEA Games, Lalisang finished a creditable 9th in the 2001 AMF World Cup in Spain.

Lalisang will be hoping to do well on home soil and with the home crowd cheering him on.
