Local bowlers sweep Men's and Ladies' Masters titles

13th June, Manila: Filipino lass, Liza del Rosario captured back-to-back titles after winning the 32nd Boysen-PBC Philippines International Open Ladies' Masters crown while American Purvis Granger took the Men's at Green Valley Country Club Bowling Center.

The championship which started on May 30 ended at Green Valley Country Club Bowling Center with 14 top Asian men and ladies qualifying for the AVIVA Asian Bowling Tour Philippines leg.

Malaysian Open champion, Liza del Rosario proved too good for the field to bag the Ladies' Master crown when she defeated challenger, Happy Soediyono of Indonesia in a sudden death finals 192/238 to 250/182. There was no stopping the leader of both the two blocks when the home crowd was fully behind her. Soediyono settled for second despite winning the second match after defeating 3rd-seed Liza Clutario (227) and Malaysia's Wendy Chai (225).

Soediyono had to strike in the last frame to win and when she dropped the ball during her delivery, 'Lady Luck' was with her when the ball rolled down the lane for a strike for a final score of 234.

Soediyono also took the first match by defeating two former World Ranking Masters champions, Jesmine Ho (184) and Jennifer Tan (194) both from Singapore.

Azidi Ameran, like Liza came close to lifting back-to-back titles but was beaten by AVIVA Asian Bowling Tour Grand Slam Champion, Philippines' American Coach Purvis Granger 210-188 in the last hurdle.

Malaysian International Open champion Azidi, who made the finals after he won the tie-breaker for the last spot in the mixed pool of the Men's qualifying table yesterday and finished 9th in the first block Masters finals. He made up ground today after knocking down 1855 to give himself a total of 3594 and trailed Granger by 111 pins going into the stepladder finals.

In the second stepladder match, Azidi started the match with a spare in the first frame and then strung together 8 consecutive strikes to win with 269 against 3rd -seed Wu Siu Hong (246) from Hong Kong and winner of the first

match Korean Lee Tae Ju (194). Lee won the first match 226 against 5th-seed Ryan Lalisang from Indonesia and 6th-seed, Jonathan Lim of Malaysia. Granger who finished runner-up in the Thailand leg just last month in Bangkok, took pole position in both 1st and second blocks roll off before beating Azidi in the Finals. Hong Kong's Wu Siu Hong came in third, Lee Tae Ju ended up in 4th ahead of Jonathan Lim in 5th and Ryan Lalisang 6th.

First block leaders cruise into stepladder finals

13th June, Manila: Leaders of the first block finals, Liza del Rosario and Purvis Granger cruised into the stepladder finals of the 32nd Boysen-PBC Philippines International Open at Green Valley Coutry Club Bowling Center this afternoon.

The championship which started on May 30 at Green Valley Country Club Bowling Center ended its second block finals awaiting the start of the steladder finals.

AVIVA ABT Grand Slam champion and first block leader, Purvis Granger was on a hot streak in the second block of the Men's Open Masters finals to qualify as top-seed for the stepladder finals. Granger, rounded off the two-day finals with 3705 and 111 pinsa ahead of Malaysia's Azidi Ameran on 3594.

The Malaysian Open champion, Azidi had to survive a tie-breaker roll-off for the last qualifying spot yesterday and finished 9th in the first block.

Asian Championship Gold medalist Wu Siu Hong from Hong Kong took third spot with 3577 followed by Korean Lee Tae Ju with a score of 3561 in fourth. Indoensia's Ryan Leonard Lalisang dropped one place from 4th yesterday to 5th with 3554 while the final stepladder spot in the Men's division went to the 19 year-old youngster from Malaysia, Jonathan Lim with 3541.

In the Ladies' division, Malaysian Open champion and first block leader, Liza del Rosario again completed her second block with a total of 3531. Liza managed to hold on to her lead with 24 pins in front of second-place, Wendy Chai of Malaysia. The two-time Singapore Open champion knocked down 3507 to also finish well ahead of third-place Liza Clutario on 3466. 2001 World Ranking Masters champion, Jesmine Ho from Singapore came in fourth with 3390.

Thailand leg 1st runner-up, Happy Soediyon of Indonesia maintained her fifth place with 3340 while 2002 World Ranking Masters champion, Jennifer Tan made the cut for the stepladder finals in sixth with 3337.

Big names and regulars were missing in the AVIVA Asian Bowling Philippines leg. Defending champion, Frederick Ong (17th), Malaysia's Zulmazran Zulkifli (18th), Malaysia leg champion, Paulo Valdez (19th), Alex Liew (20th), Tom Hahl (21st) and Yannaphon L. (26th). The Men's and Ladies' Open Masters stepladder finals will commence soon. The top 6 finishers in both division will make the cut for the stepladder finals.

Local bowlers take top spots in first block finals

12th June, Manila: Local bowlers, Purvis Granger and Liza del Rosario took the lead in both the Men's and Ladies' Open Masters first block finals in the 32nd Boysen-PBC Philippines International Open at Green Valley Coutry Club Bowling Center.

The championship which started on May 30 entered its Masters Finals round with the first block of the Open Masters.

AVIVA ABT Grand Slam champion, Purvis Granger was on a roll to record an incredible 1898 over the 8-game first block Men's Open Masters finals to lead a strong field of 36 international bowlers. Granger, who was also runner-up in the Thailand leg only has a slender lead of 19 pins ahead of 19 year-old Wu Siu Hong from Hong Kong. Wu's 1879 score was 69 pins better than third-place finisher, Alvin Kwang of Singapore on 1810.

Indonesia's top bowler, Ryan Leonard Lalisang did well to stay with the leaders on 1801 in fourth while the Malaysian youngster and All Events Gold medalist at the 6th Asian Schools championship, Jonathan Lim finished fifth with 1786. Filipino, Chester King took sixth spot with 1775 ahead of another Malaysian youngster and 2002 ABT Taipei leg winner, Zulmazran Zulkifli who scored 1762.

In the Ladies' division, Malaysian Open champion and top qualifier, Liza del Rosario again took pole position in the first block with 1772 and an impressive average of 221.5. Liza held on to her lead with only 14 pin separating her and second-place, Wendy Chai of Malaysia. The two-time Singapore Open champion knocked down 1758 to stay infront of third-place Liza Clutario on 1727. Another Filipino lass, Irene Garcia Benitez took fourth spot with 1706 ahead of ABT Thailand Leg runner-up, Happy Soediyono of Indonesia in fifth spot with 1704.

Taipei's Huang Chiung Yao did well to take 6th position with 1672 while World Ranking Masters champion, Jennifer Tan of Singapore settled for 7th with a score of 1655.

Defending champions, Frederick Ong could only finish 18th in the Men's division while three-time Asian No. 1, Shalin Zulkifli was 16th in the Ladies division. The Men's and Ladies' Open Masters will continue with their second block finals tomorrow (13th June) with the scores carried forward. The top 6 finishers in both division will make the cut for the stepladder finals.

Remy Ong tops final Men's Open Masters qualifying table

11th June, Manila: Busan Asian three Gold medalist, Remy Ong from Singapore topped the final Men's Open Masters qualifying table of the 32nd Boysen-PBC Philippines International Open while Filipino lass, Liza del Rosario maintained pole in the Ladies' division.

The championship which started on May 30 entered its final day of qualifying for the Masters finals.

Remy, who won the 2002 Cathay Bowl Super Classic took the top spot from overnight leader, Wu Siu Hong from Hong Kong with a superb 1024 just 2 pins ahead in the final day's qualifying round. Wu settled for second with his 1022 while Remy's teammate, Lenny Lim finished third with 983.

World Youth Singles Gold medalist, Yannaphon Larpapharat of Thailand who struggled and dropped out of the spot he had in the mixed pool, managed to qualify with 980 in fourth.

Meanwhile, Korean Yoon Dal Young, who scored a perfect game two days ago, this year's Malaysian Open champion, Azidi Ameran and Taipei's Wu Fu Lung will play a one-game roll-off to decide the last spot of the Men's qualifiers.

In the Ladies' division, Malaysian Open champion Liza del Rosario confirmed her top position with 946 followed by Malaysia's Sarah Yap in second with 934 while 2002 World Ranking Masters champion, Jennifer Tan from Singapore in third with 915.

Liza Clutario took 4th spot with 900 followed by Taipei's Huang Chiung Yao in 5th with 865.

Two local Filipinos, Jacklyn Sabater (879) and Youth Girl's Masters 2nd runner-up, Cheche Abrantes (862) managed to sqeeze into the finals last in the local pool and mixed pool respectively pushing Malaysia's Choy Poh Lai out of the qualifying table.

Qualifiers of the Men's and Ladies' Open Masters will play their first block finals tomorrow (12th June) followed by the second block on Friday 13th June. The top 14 Asian men and women at the end of Open Masters finals will qualify for the AVIVA ABT Philippines Leg which will be held on June 14 - 15.

Korean Yoon Dal Young shoots first perfect game

10th June, Manila: 31 year-old Korean, Yoon Dal Young scored the first perfect game in the 32nd Boysen-PBC Philippines International Open yesterday when he partnered World Youth Singles Gold medalist, Yannaphon Larpapharat of Thailand in the Doubles event to win Peso100,000 sponsored by AVIVA Asia.

The championship which started on May 30 entered its second last day of qualifying for the Masters finals.

Yoon, who has been bowling for 10 years, scored the magical 300 in his second game of the Doubles event. He scored 203 followed by the 300 while his partner, Yannaphon Larpapharat downed 171 and 161.

Yoon has so far bowled 12 perfect games and he has won Peso 100,000 for his effort. Nadri Mohd Noor who partnered Azidi Ameran in their Doubles the day before, missed the perfect game with 299.

Yoon has so far made the Masters finals in fifth in the mixed pool of the Men's qualifying table with 931. Although the score may not be enough to secure a spot, he will sure better that score with confidence after scoring the perfect game.

Meanwhile, World Youth Gold medalist, Wu Siu Hong from Hong Kong took over the lead in the Men's overseas qualifying pool with a superb 1022 ahead of Singapore's Lenny Lim, who knocked down 983 in second. Third place went to Thailand's Yannaphon Larpapharat with 980 dropping early leader, Rudy Goenawan to 4th on 976.

There is no change in the Ladies' local pool with Liza del Rosario leading with 946 followed by Cecilia Yap in second with 923 while Liza CLutario finished third with 900. Overnight leader Sarah Yap from Malaysia maintained top in the overseas pool with 934 followed by Singapore's veteran Alice Tay in second with 893. SEA Games Masters Gold medalist, Lai Kin Ngoh from Malaysia finished third with 876.

Frederick Ong, Sharon Limansantoso captures Youth Masters title

9th June, Manila: Defending champion, Frederick Ong of the PBAP-Bolwmart retained the Youth Boy's Masters crown of the 32nd Boysen-PBC Philippines International Open while 6th Asian Schools Championship two Gold medalist Sharon Limansantoso captured the Girl's title.

The championship which started on May 30 entered its 12th day and bowlers are scrambling to get into the Masters finals.

Frederick Ong of PBAP-Bowlmart shrugged off the pressure of a fiercely comeback by Wu Siu Hong of Hong Kong. Frederick averaged 216 in the 10 games finals to win the 32nd Boysen-PBC Open Youth crown. Wu Siu Hong finished 2nd with a 212 average while Jeremy Posadas also of PBAP-Bowlmart salvaged 3rd place with 210 average. Koreas Choi Bok Eum settled for 4th place.

Meanwhile in the Girl's division, Sharon Limansantoso of PBAP-Bowlmart needed an extra game to capture the Girl's division title as Che-Che Abrantes of TBAM-PRIMA fought with a last game of 248 to force a tie. It was a tit-n-tat match in the sudden-death rolloff until Sharon connected strikes which eventually gave her the title. Leader Apple Posadas of PBAP-Bowlmart dropped to 3rd place and Joan Yambao held on to 4th.

In the Men's division with Paulo Valdez maintining pole position with 981. Paulo continued to lead AVIVA ABT Grand Slam champion and runner-up in the Thailand leg, Purvis Granger with 976 Tyrone Ongpauco, Biboy Rivera and Benny Dytoc sharing third on 965.

In the overseas pool, Indonesia's Rudy Goenawan occupied top spot with a score of 976 followed by Malaysia's Zulmazran Zulkifli storming into second with 974. Last year's Thailand leg champion, Alex Liew finished third with 965 while Malaysian Open 2nd runner-up, Alvin Kwang claimed fourth with 963.

Daniel Lim of Malaysia turned in at fifth with 960 with 17 year-old new member of the Malaysia national squad and 6th Asian Schools two Gold medalist, Nadri Mohd Nor in sixth with 957.

Sarah Yap grabs early lead in Ladies' overseas pool

8th June, Manila: Busan Asian Games Doubles Gold medalist, Sarah Yap from Malaysia took an early lead in the Ladies' overseas qualifying table of the 32nd Boysen-PBC Philippines International Open at the GVCC Bowling Centre while Paulo Valdez remained top in Men's division.

The championship which started on May 30 entered its 11th day and scores are getting higher with the arrivial of the foreign bowlers.

Sarah Yap, who arrived Manila a day before the Malaysian contigent, took an early lead in the Ladies' overseas pool with an impressive score of 934 and second overall. She improved on 870 scored in her first attempt and is ahead of Singapore's Yap Seok Kim in second with 870.

Third spot went to AVIVA ABT Malaysia leg semi finalist, Happy Soediyono of Indonesia with 848 followed by World Youth Singles Gold medalist, Angkana Netrivseth of Thailand in fourth with 830. Honk Kong's Cookie Lee was fifth with 823.

2003 Malaysian Open champion Liza del Rosario still lead with 946 in the local pool followed by Cecilia Yap in second with 923. Liza Clutario finished third with 900 while Joylyn Jambao took fourth spot with 895. Fifth place went to Jojo Canare who scored 883.

There is no change in the Men's division with Paulo Valdez maintining pole position with 981. Paulo, who laid off bowling for a couple of year due to a wrist injury, has made a tremendous comeback to finished runner-up in the Malaysian Open and winning the ABT Malaysia Leg.

AVIVA ABT Thailand leg runner-up, Purvis Granger also kept his second spot in the local pool on 976 which gave him an early lead only to see it taken away by Paulo. Third place was shared by Tyrone Ongpauco, Biboy Rivera and Benny Dytoc on 965.

In the overseas pool, Indonesians top two positions when Rudy Goenawan scored 976 followed by Ryan Leonard Lalisang with 944. Rudy's score is tied with Purvis for second overall. 2002 Asian Ranked No. 1, Wu Siu Hong from Hong Kong came in third with 935.

Paulo Valdez takes over lead in local qualifying table

7th June, Manila: AVIVA ABT 2002 Malaysia leg champion, Paulo Valdez took over the lead of the local qualifying table in the 32nd Boysen-PBC Philippines International Open at the GVCC Bowling Centre while Liza del Rosario remained the Ladies division leader.

The championship which started on May 30 entered its 9th day and expects foreign bowlers to arrive Sunday, June 8 onwards.

Leading the pack of Men's Open qualifying table is Paulo Valdez who scored 981 to topple earlier leader, Purvis Granger. Paulo, who did not compete in the Thailand leg last month, is maintaining the form when he won the Malaysia leg in early April. AVIVA ABT 2002 Grand Slam champion and runner-up in the Thailand leg droped to second with 976.

Tyrone Ongpauco still shared third place with Biboy Rivera, winner of a Vintage Car perfect game in the Malaysian Open, and Benny Dytoc on 965.

Busan Asian Games Doubles Gold medalist, R.J. Bautista finished 6th with 958 followed by newcomer, Jomar Jumapao in 7th with 954. Al Dy (946) and Jonas Baltasar (940) took up 9th to 10th spots respectively.

There is no change in the Women's division with AVIVA ABT Malaysia leg champion, Liza del Rosario maintining pole position with 946. The 26 year-old student from Manila displayed her fine form to lead the local pool comfortably by 50 pins from Cecilia Yap, who knocked down 896 in her 4-game qualifying round.

Joylyn Yambao took third spot just one pin behind Cecilia on 895 while Joj Canare moved up into fourth on 883. Irene Garcia Benitez was relegated to fifth with 864 with Jacklyn Sabater slotting into sixth with 879.

6th Asian Games two Gold medalist, Sharon Adeline Limansantoso from Indonesia came next in 7th with 872 and Apple Posadas in 8th with 839.

Singapore's Yap Seok Kim took top spot in the Ladies' overseas pool with 870 while Malaysia's Sarah Yap, who arrived a day before the Malaysian contingent, took to the lanes to score 832. Purvis Granger tops local qualifying table

5th June, Manila: AVIVA ABT 2002 Grand Slam champion, Purvis Granger topped the local qualifying table of the 32nd Boysen-PBC Philippines International Open at the Green Valley Country Club Bowling Centre while Filipino lass, Liza del Rosario lead the Ladies division.

The championship started May 30 with the local participants competiting in the qualifying rounds before the foreign bowlers arrive from Sunday, June 8 onwards.

Purvis Granger, runner-up in the AVIVA ABT Thailand leg just last month, scored an impressive 976 over his 4-game qualifying attempt to lead the local table. Filipino Paulo Valdez, the AVIVA ABT Malaysia leg champion and runner-up in the Malaysian Open in March, continued his fine form to score 969, just 7 pins behind Purvis in second.

Tyrone Ongpauco shared third place with Biboy Rivera, winner of a Vintage Car perfect game in the Malaysian Open, and Benny Dytoc on 965.

Ellen Ramos (824) and Jojo Canare (818) took up 8th and 9th spots respectively.

Filipino Frederick Ong and Malaysia's Shalin Zulkifli will be defending their title which will take place June 13 and 14 when the qualifying rounds end on June 12.
