Jakarta, Shah Alam captures Singles gold

13th November, Jakarta: Paolo M. Hernandez of Jakarta defeated top seed, Muha Nur Aiman in the Men's Singles final to capture Jakarta's first gold medal of the 37th Asian Intercity Bowling Championship while Nurul Alyssa Junaidi of Shah Alam captured the Women's Singles gold medal.

Both the gold medal contenders were equally impressive throughout the match with little to separate them. Aiman had ended his match with 257 after rolling a double in the tenth and eleventh frames but ended with a 7-pin count for 257.

Hernandez also struck twice in the tenth frame and needed nine pins in his final shot to win by a single pin and the Indonesian rolled a strike to take the match and win the first gold for host city, Jakarta with 259.

Second-seed Hernandez defeated third-seed, Muhammad Azizi Naim Jabar of Shah Alam, 250-224 in the Men's Singles semi-finals to advance to the final.

Top-seed, Muhd Nur Aiman of Subang Jaya sailed past fourth-seed, Aldric Andreo Lasay Bathan of Paranque, 204-178 in the other semi-finals to face the Indonesian. Aiman settled for the silver medal while Muhammad Azizi and Bathan took home a bronze medal each.

Meanwhile, third-seed, Nurul Alyssa Junaidi of Shah Alam had tied the final match with top-seed, Faten Najihah Bt Ahmad Faik of Petaling Jaya, 226 forcing both having to take a one-ball roll-off to break the tie. Both struck in their first ball.

In the second ball, Faten rolled a perfect pocket shot but left the stubborn pin-10 standing firmly. Nurul Alyssa struck in her second ball to win the tie-breaker and the first gold medal for Shah Alam.

Nurul Alyssa had dispatched second-seed, Anis Hannani Binti Romzi of Petaling Jaya, 256-213 in the semi-finals to advance to the final. Faten breezed past fourth-seed, Nurul Ayunni Junaidi of Shah Alam, 226-196 to face Nurul Alyssa in the final.

Faten settled for the silver medal while Anis Hannani and Nurul Ayunni were awarded a bronze medal each. Second-seed, Felinda Grzybowska of Kuala Lumpur defeated top-seed, Yang Young Ja of Jeju, 211-202 in the final to win the Women's Senior Singles gold medal.

Grzybowska had earlier out-classed third-seed, Andrieza Hanum Fanali of Jakarta, 234-135 in the semi-finals to advance to the final. Yang eadged fourth-seed, Salwa Binti Buang of Shah Alam, 189-170 in the other semi.

In the Men's Senior division, top-seed Henry Hui Cheuk Ho easily defeated second-seed, Gary Chan Chon Tong of Subang Jaya, 256-172 in the final to win the first gold medal for New Territories. Hui also had an easy victory over fourth-seed, Ong Heng Huat of Pasir Ris in the earlier semi-final match.

Chan, who earned the silver medal, had clinched his spot in the final with a win over third-seed, Suwito Suriani of Jakarta, 209-194 in the other semi-final match.
