UAE, Korea wins third gold

7th November, Ho Chih Minh City: UAE men and Korean women ended the 3rd Asian Indoor Games 2009 at Saigon Superbowl with victories in the Men's and Women's Team finals to win their third gold medals on Saturday afternoon.

Two gold medalist, Naif Oqab anchored his teammates Hussain Al-Suwaidi, Sayed Ibrahim Al-Hashemi and Shaker Al-Hassan to beat No. 3 seed, Malaysia 829-788 to win their third gold medal of the championship.

The Eimratis had earlier upstaged the mighty Koreans and topseed with a classy performance, 845-719 to book their place in the finals while Malaysia's Kang Bo Long, Rodson Tong, Kelvin Keong and Muhd Syafiq Ridhwan had earlier edged Kuwait in a closely fought semi, 773-764 to face UAE in the finals.

final frame and Naif Oqab sealing the victory with a strike and spare in his bonus frame.

"We knew that if we could defeat the Koreans, we would have a good chance of winning our third gold medal," said the team captain, Shaker Al-Hassan. "We've already won two gold medals by beating Korea so we could see that they were under greater pressure than us."

"This is my third gold medal and I couldn't be happier," said the father of a newborn baby, Hussain Al-Suwaidi. "I had to leave my family behind just days after my wife gave birth to my son, so this is really worthwhile.

Korea and Kuwait took home a bronze medal each as losing semifinalists while Malaysia men won their first medal of the championship after their women compatriots had won a silver and two bronze medals.


Meanwhile, the finals of the Women's Team was a one-sided affair as topseed Korea easily defeated Japan, 895-696 to win their third gold medal. Two gold medalist, Son Yun Hee again led her teammates, Jeon Eun Hee, Gang Hye Eun and Hwang Sub Ok to their third victory.

Natsumi Koizumi, Rina Asada, Kazumi Satoh and Singles silver medalist, Maki Sano had no answer for the Koreans and could not repeat the form they showed when they outclassed Malaysia, 867-770 in the semifinals.

Korea beat No. 4 seed Milki Ng, Katherine Lau, Chan Shuk Han and Vanessa Fung of Hong Kong, 770-706 to set sight for another gold. Both Malaysia and Hong Kong took home a brzone medal while Japan won their second silver.

Korea women and UAE men swept all the 6 gold medals contested but it was Korea, who emerged as the overall champion again. The men went home without a gold but won 2 silver and 1 bronze medal.

Korea outclasses field for pole

6th November, Ho Chih Minh City: The mighty Korean women again put in a dominating performance to advance into the semifinals knockout stage as topseed after ending the Women's Team second block of the 3rd Asian Indoor Gmes 2009 by a hugh margin.

Jeon Eun Hee, Gang Hye Eun, Hwang Sub Ok and two gold medalist, Son Yun Hee who led the first block with a margin of 105, immeditaely set a fast pace to stretch their lead to 157 pins with a fourth game of 895.

Doubles silver and bronze medalists, Malaysia took over second spot with 857 as Japan could only knock down 784 to drop to third while Hong Kong maintained fourth spot with 791. Whilst the Korean's nearest opponent posted sub-800 games in the fifth, the leader shot a superb 914 to build up an even higher margin of 338.

At that stage, it was a case of who would finish second and third with the fourth and final spot being hotly contested between Hong Kong and fifth-placed Chinese Taipei.

Korea eased off their final game with 783 yet stretching their margin to 371 with a team total of 5185. Son shot the highest 6-game series of 1351 with both Jeon and Gang posting 1301 and 1300.


Fatin Syazliana, Tengku Emanina Laily, Sharon Koh and Sin Li Jane of Malaysia, settled second spot with 4814 followed by Japan's Natsumi Koizumi, Rina Asada, Kazumi Satoh and Singles silver medalist, Maki Sano in third with 4783.

Hong Kong's Milki Ng, Katherine Lau, Chan Shuk Han and Vanessa Fung clinched the last semifinal spot with 4783, just 30 pins ahead of Chinese Taipei finishing fifth. Indonesia finished strongly in their last game but ended in sixth with 4711.

Hong Kong would have an uphill task when they face Korea in the first semifinal match while Malaysia will meet Japan for the other semi on Saturday. The winners will face off in the title match for the final women's gold medal.

Korea looked set to win the overall title after having won 2 gold and 2 silver medals. The Korean men have yet to pick up their first gold medal as both their gold medals came from the women.

Korea set for another gold

6th November, Ho Chih Minh City: Korea looked set for another gold medal when their men took topseed to advance into the Men's Team semifinals knocout stage of the 3rd Asian Indoor Games 2009 at Saigon Superbowl on Friday afternoon.

Malaysia went into the second block with a 45 pin lead over Japan from Thursday's first block and got off the mark well with an opening fourth game of 900 but Choi Bol Eum, Cho Young Seon, Jang Dong Chul and Kim Tae Young fired a scintilating 983 to narrow the gap to 24 pins.

An average 795 from Kang Bo Long, Rodson Tong, Kelvin Keong and Muhd Syafiq Ridhwan allowed the Koreans to leapfrog them after another superb 930 in the fifth game to take over the running, 111 pins ahead.

Dubyyan and Jassim Darwish relished in the drying conditions to strom home and snatch second spot with 5219.

Malaysia hung in for third despite another average game of 745 while overnight third-placed Indonesia had a disasterous final game which saw them losing a place in the semifinals with 5143.


Two gold medalist from the Singles and Doubles, Naif Oqab anchored his teammates, Hussain Al-Suwaidi, Sayed Ibrahim Al-Hashemi and Shaker Al-Hassan to a second block 2690 to snatch the fourth and final semifinal place with 5195.

Ryan Lalisang, Dennis Renova, Rangga Yudhira and Hengky Susanto wasted the chance to gaurantee themselves a medal by making the top 4 cut. Choi posted the highest 6-game score of 1416 followed by Syafiq and Thailand's Yannaphon Larp-apharat with 1408.

The Koreans will meet UAE in the first semifinal match for a possible revenge after losing to them in both the Singles and Doubles finals while No. 2 seed Kuwait will face Malaysia in the other semi on Saturday.

Malaysia hangs on to lead

5th November, Ho Chi Minh City: Malaysia hung on to the lead of the Men's Team first block of the 3rd Asian Indoor Games 2009 after setting a cracking pace in the first two games at Saigon Superbowl on Thursday evening.

Kang Bo Long led his team with a sizzling 269 opening game as Rodson Tong, Kelvin Keong and anchorman Muhd Syafiq Ridhwan firing 212, 232 and 247 for a total of 960 to lead Japan by 12 pins followed by Indonesia a close third.

Another superb 943 by the Malaysian quartet gave them a 66 pin lead over Indonesia after the second game. Ryan Lalisang's 279 in his second game helped his fellow compatriots, Dennis Ranova, Ranggna Yudhira and Hengky Susanto to ove into second spot with 907 after an impressive 930 in the first.

Japan's Yoshinao Masatoki, Hisashi Obara, Shogo Wada and Masaru Ito posted only 828 in their second game to drop to third while Asia powerhouse, Korea hauling themselves up to fourth with 924.

The Malaysians kept their cool under extreme pressure to fire home a respectable 860 to hang on to the lead with 2763 as Japan bounched back with a strong 942 in their third and final game of the block to regain second spot on 2718.


The Indonesians posted a decent 878 but had to settle for third spot with 2715, just 3 pins off the Japanese while Korea's Choi Bok Eum, Cho Young Seon, Jang Dong Chul and Kim Tae Young held fourth spot with 2656.

Muhd Syafiq Ridhwan of Malaysia fired the highest 3-game series of 770 from 247, 268 and 255 effort while Japan's Masatoki and Indonesia's Lalisang shared second highest series with 739.

Kuwait's Basil Al-Anzi, Mohamad Al-Zaidan, Khaled Al-Dubyyan and Singles bronze medalist, Jassim Darwish were not far from making the cut in fifth with 2650, just 6 pins off fourth-placed Korea.

5th November, Ho Chi Minh City: World Women's Championship team gold medalist proved too good for the field as the Korean quartet snatched the lead in the Women's Team of 4 first block of the 3rd Asian Indoor Gmes 2009.

Singles silver medalist, Maki Sano led her teammates, Natsumi Koizumi, Rina Asada and Kazumi Satoh to a flying start to lead the field of 13 teams with a cracking opening game of 912 as Katherine Lau posted the second perfect game of the championship to give Hong Kong second spot with 895.

Japan posted another superb second game of 883 with Korea in hot pursuit to trail the Japanese by 31 pins as Hong Kong dropped to third despite kncoking down 820.

While most of the teams dropped off their pace in their final game of the first block, Doubles gold medalist, Jeon Eun Hee and Son Yun Hee led their teammates Gang Hye Eun and Hwang Sun Ok to just 829 to snatch pole with 2593.

Japan bowled a poor 693 to finished second behind the Koreans with 2488, 105 pins adrift as Malaysia stormed home to take third spot with 2474 ahead of Hong Kong finishing fourth with 2426.

Indonesia took fifth spot with 2419 a further 5 pins away while Philippines ended in sixth position with 2413, 6 pins adrift. Chinese Taipei and Singapore rounded up the top 8 with 2326 and 2287 respectively.

The women will resume their second block of 3 games over short oil pattern after which the top 4 teams will advance into the semifinals knockout rounds.

Korea wins second gold

4th November, Ho Chi Minh City: Korea won their second gold medal of the 3rd Asian Indoor Games 2009 after Singles gold medalist Son Yun Hee with partner, Jeon Eun Hee triumped in the Women's Doubles finals on Wednesday.

Son Yun Hee and Jeon Eun Hee snatched pole position in the final game of the earlier 6-games Doubles event with 2589 pinfalls to advance into the quarterfinal knockout stage as topseed. And the firm favourite cruised into the semi with a convincing victory over Japan, 462-351 in the quarterfinals.

The Korean pair put in another scintillating display of prowess as they easily defeated No. 8 seed, Chinese Taipei, 452-364 to book their spot in the finals. Son and Jeon were simply unstoppable as they beat Malaysia's Fatin Syazliana and Sin Li Jane, 432-393 to claim Korea's second gold medal.

compatriots, Sharon Koh and Tengku Emanina Laily, 407-365 in an all-Malaysia semifinals to face the mighty Koreans in the finals.


Second-seed, Singapore were eliminated by the first Malaysian pair, 436-475 in the quarterfinals while the second Malaysia pair defeated No. 4 seed Indonesia by identical 475-409 in the final quarterfinals.

After two events, Korea lead the medal tally with 2 gold and 2 silver medals. Son won her second gold while the two silver medals came from the men. UAE is second in the standings with 2 gold medals.

The women will contest their first block of 3 games in the Team of 4 event on Thursday morning and the men will bowl in the afternoon. The second block will be played on Friday during which the top 4 teams will advance into the semifinals knockout stage for the final medal of the championship.

Second gold for UAE

3rd November, Ho Chi Minh City: Topseed, UAE's Naif Oqab and Hussain Al-Suwaidi over-powered the mighty Koreans in the Men's Doubles finals to win their second of the 3rd Asian Indoor Games 2009 on Tuesday.

Singles Gold medalist, Naif Oqab had partnered Hussain Al-Suwaidi to top the second squad of the Men's 6-game Doubles event and tied with Squad A leader, Choi Bok Eum and Kim Tae Young of Korea on 2744.

Naif bowled for UAE while Kim for Korea in the 9th and 10th frame tie-breaker in which Naif got the better of the Korean, 46-28 to earn the topseed going into the quarterfinal knockout stage.

Both UAE and Korea cruised through the first knockout stage with ease. UAE out-classed No. 8 seed, Somjed Kusonpithak and Yannaphon Lar-papharat of Thailand, 469-379 to move a step closer to the finals.

Korean trashed No. 7 seed, Hisashi Obara and Shogo Wada of Japan, 432-382 to advance into the semifinals. The two remaining semifinal spots went to No. 4 seed, Eric Tseng and Wu Siu Hong of Hong Kong after they beat Singapore, 416-396.

No. 3 seed Jang Dong Chul and Cho Young Seon of Korea narrowly lost to sixth-seed, Ryan Lalisang and Hengky Susanto of Indonesia, 427-420 in the last quarterfinal match.

Naif and Hussain proved a handful for the Indonesians as they had a convincing victory, 493-411 to book their spot in the finals while Choi and Kim put in another world-class performance to beat Hong Kong, 492-385 for a rematch with UAE in the finals.


UAE had a better start than their opponent as both Choi and Kim failed to find their lines. At the halfway mark, it appeared the Emiratis were crusing to another victory but when Choi had five strikes in a row, pressure began to mount for Naif and Hussain.

But the match took another twist as Kim missed a crucial pin 10 forcing his teammate to strike out. An light pocket shot from the Korean southpaw failed to knock down the stubborn pin 10 which meant UAE had taken a narrow 1 pin victory over the Korea, 431-430.

"I almost could not come to Vietnam for this championship as my wife has just gave birth to my his child," said the delighted Hussain dedicating this victory to his newborn son. "I came here much later as I had to spend some time with my family.

"I'm glad to win my second gold and I also dedicate this victory to my close teammate, Hussain, who deserve this gold medal more than me," said Naif Oqab. "We baol exceptionally well today and we've to thank our new coach, Patrick Healey.

The win also gave Naif his second gold medal in two events contested by the southpaw. UAE now leads the medal tally with 2 gold while Korea trailed in second with 1 gold and 2 silver medals.

The women will contest their Doubles on Wednesday morning in a single squad where the top 8 finishers will advance into the knockout stage.

3rd November, Ho Chi Minh City: Asia powerhouse Korea demonstrated their prowess as Singles silver medalist, Choi Bok Eum partnered Kim Tae Young to take pole in the Men's Doubles Squad A of the 3rd Asian Indoor Games 2009.

Thailand's Sitiphol Kunaksorn and Surasak Manuwong set the opening pace with a super 465 to lead the Korea's Choi Bok Eum and Kim Tae Young by a slender 3 pins followed by Japan's Yoshinao Masatoki and Masaru Ito a further 2 pins away in third.

But the Thai just could not hang on to their lead as the mighty Koreans downed 482 in their second game to take over the running, 74 pins ahead of Indonesia's Ryan Lalisang and Hengky Susanto a distance second.

Choi and Kim went on to romp home a comfortable leader with 2744 total, 180 pins from Indonesia in second. Kim, who won the Trios gold medal at the 2008 World Men's Championship, posted the higest 6-game series of 1426 to Choi's 1318.

Lalisang shot 1277 with partner, Hengky posting 1287 to give the team a total of 2564. Kuwait's Mohamad Al-Zaidan and Khalid Al-Dubyyan stormed home strongly in their final game to tie third spot with Qatar on 2518.

Khalid Al-Dosari shot 1234 to Salem Al-Marzouqi's 1284 to give the Qataris a chance to make the top 8 when Squad B contest their Doubles later this afternoon. Hong Kong's Cyrus Cheung and Wicky Yeung finished fifth with 2483.

First game leader Thailand settled for sixth with 2480 while Japan and India completed the top 8 wioth 2477 and 2469. Korea also claimed the highest single game of 502 in their final game.

Topseed earns gold for Korea

2nd November, Ho Chi Minh City: Topseed, Son Yun Hee took a well-earned gold medal for Korea after she triumped in the Women's Singles title match of the 3rd Asian Indoor Gmes 2009.

Son Yun Hee, who won a gold and 2 bronze medals at the World Women's Championship in Las Vegas, easily defeated No. 2 seed and challenger, Maki Sano of Japan to claim the first gold medal for Korea.

The topseed had edged No. 4 seed, Tannya Roumimper of Indonesia, 206-192 in the first semifinal match and No. 8 seed, Wang Ya-Ting of Chinese Taipei, 236-187 in the quarterfinals. Her team-mate and seventh-seed, Jeon Eun Hee crashed out after being ousted by Sano, 172-179 in the quarterfinals.

Sano, who settled for the silver medal, reached the finals by deafeating third-seed, Shayna Ng of Singapore, 211-172 in the second semifinals. Both Roumimper and Shayna took home a bronze medal each as losing semifinalists.

In the earlier 6-games Singles event, the champion had tied with Sano after both totaled 1300 but the Korean earned topseed after she beat Sano, 50-19 in the 9th and 10th frame roll-off to break the tie.

Sano had led for the first four games but lost the lead to Son at the fifth game to trail by only 1 pin. Son shot 215 while Sano knocked down 216 for the tie. Shayna finished third with 1231 with Roumimper fourth with 1227.

Filipina, Liza Del Rosario shot a high game of 247 in her final game to storm into fifth spot with 1219 as Fok Ka Wai of Singapore, Jeon Eun Hee and Wang Ya-Ting made the top 8 quarterfinal cut from sixth to eighth positions.

The men will resume competition with their Doubles event in two squads over long oil pattern. The top 8 finishers from the two combined squads will again advance into the quarterfinals knockout stage.

UAE southpaw retains Singles title

1st November, Ho Chi Minh City: UAE's Naif Oqab Al-Abdla successfully retained the Men's Singles title to win the first gold medal of the 3rd Asian Indoor Games 2009 at Saigon Superbowl on Sunday.

Naif Oqab, who won the same event two years ago at the Macau Asian Indoor Games, finished third in the opening squad and squeezed into the knockout quarterfinals stage in eighth after the standings were combined at the end of the second squad.

The Emirati trashed topseed and leader of Squad A, Jang Dong Chul of Korea, 279-183 to advance into the semifinals as No. 7 seed, Jassim Darwish of Kuwait edged No. 2 seed and leader of Squad B, Yannaphon Larp-apharat of Thailand, 218-216 in the second quarterfinal match.

Another Thai and No. 3 seed, Surasak Manuwong lost to No. 6 seed, Choi Bok Eum of Korea, 162-238 to move into the semifinals while Filipino, Biboy Rivera edged Japan's Yoshinao Masatoki, 205-194 to take up the last semifinal spot.

Naif booked his final spot after he outsed No. 4 seed, Rivera, 219-194 in the first semifinals as the Korean, Choi put in a scintillating performance to outclass the Kuwaiti, Jassim, 289-226 in the other semi.


The title match between Naif and Choi was a nail-bitting affair as there was very little between the two. As Naif managed to string together several crucial strikes together, Choi had a tough time to bring down all ten pins despite numerous seemingly perfect pocket shots.

UAE claimed the first gold medal, 222-219 as the favourite, Korea settled the silver. Both losing semifinalists, Rivera and Jassim picked up a bronze medal each.

Thailand dominated the second squad with a 1-2 finish as Yannaphon and Surasak amassed 1463 and 1397 followed by Rivera in third with 1386. Masatoki and Choi joined the trio with a fourth and fifth place finish.

The women will take to the lanes tomorrow for their Singles event in just one squad. The top 8 finishers will again advance into the knockout stage.

A perfect start for Korean

1st November, Ho Chi Minh City: Korea's Jang Dong Chul had a great start at the opening Men's Singles Squad A of the 3rd Asian Indoor Games 2009 with the tournament's first perfect game to take pole position.

The 24-year-old Jang from Gyung Buk who won the team silver medal at the 2008 World Men's Championship in Bangkok, set the lanes at Saigon Superbowl with a perfect game ahead of Thailand's Somjed Kusonpithak in second with 268.

The Korean posted another sizzling 266 to build up a 35-pin margin as Somjed knocked down 247 to continue to trail Jang in second with Saudi's Khalid Al-Hamdan third a further 13 pins away.

At the halfway mark, Jang continued his pace with 227 to stretch his lead to 57 pins as last Asian Indoor Games Singles gold medalist, Naif Oqab of UAE made his bid to move into second spot.

The Korean was simply too strong for the field of 36 bowlers in the squad when he romped home a comfortable leader with 1496 after he posted lines of 247, 257 and 205 in the 6-game event. Kuwait's 20-year-old Jassim Darwish finished stronger in the second half to take up second with 1358, 138 pins adrift.

Naif settled for third spot with 1346 followed by Malaysia's Rodson Tong in fourth position with 1309. Indonesia's Ryan Lalisang, Korea's Choi Young Seon, Mansour Al-Awami of Qatar and Muhd Syafiq Ridhwan of Malaysia made up the top 8 from fifth to eighth positions respectively.

A challenging task for host

31st October, Ho Chi Minh City: Host nation, Vietnam is fielding a relatively young team to face the Asian challenge as the 3rd Asian Indoor Games gets underway at Saigon Superbowl on Sunday.

The only two experience bowler in the women's team of host nation, Vietnam are Nguyen Thi Thanh Huong and Nguyen Thi Huyen Thao, who have been recalled into the national team to lead their young rookies in the championship.

Thanh Huong's best finish in international competition was taking second runnerup in the 3rd Vietnam Open way back in 2005. Her team-mate, Huyen Thao finished third runnerup at the same tournament.

Joining the duo will be Tran Ngan Ngoc and Huynh Ngoc Diem Thuy, who are making their first international appearance. They will face a daunting task of upstaging the mighty Koreans, who has fielded their 'A' team.

Hwang Sun Ok, Jeon Eun Hee, Gang Hye Eun and Son Yun Hee are members of the team that recently won two gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze medals at the World Women's Championship in July at Las Vegas.


In the men's division, Vietnam will be represented by four debutants, Tran Minh Binh, Ngo Xuan Giang, Nguyen Thanh Pho and Le Cong Hung. The championship is also their first-ever international assignment since joining the national team.

Asia powerhouse, Korea again entered a strong team led by Asian Games two gold medalist, Choi Bok Eum. The left-hander is joined by the World Men's Championship Trio gold medalist, Jang Dong Chul, Kim Tae Young and a debutant, Choi Young Seon.

Meanhwile, the official practice was held today for 73 men and 49 women from 20 countries devided into two squads. Two sets of oling pattern were put on for the two-hour long session in each squad.

The first event - Singles will be contested tomorrow moring for the men's division, split into two squads. The top 8 at the end of the 6 games event over short oil pattern will advance into the knockout stage.

The women's Singles will be staged the following day on Monday, 2nd November in one squad only. Again the top 8 will advance into the knockout stage over best of 3 matchplay style. ABF is on site to provide game-by-game scores for each event throughout the championship.

Record entries for meet

30th October, Ho Chi Minh City: A record entries of participants from 20 countries were received and confirmed for the 3rd Asian Indoor Games 2009 during the team managers' meeting held on Friday.

The tenpin bowling event of the Asian Indoor Games will kick off on Saturday with two squads of official practice at Saigon Superbowl in Ho Chi Minh City. This championship will also be the final tenpin bowling event in the games and will remain in the Asian Games only.

A record 74 men and 45 women totaling 118 bowlers from 20 countries will be vying for glory for this championship which were confirmed at the team managers' meeting held this afternoon near one of the official hotel, First Hotel.

ABF Vice President, Danny Santos, appointed the Technical Delegate, conducted the meeting after the Organizing Chairman for the event welcome participants to the championship during his opening speech.

Joining Santos are John Janawicz, the Technical official responsible for the lane conditioning.

Leon Lim, manager for Saigon Superbowl is the competition manager assisting Santos alongside three members of the Jury of Appeal appointed by Mr Sheikh Talal Al-Sabah, President of Asian Bowling Federation.

Honorary Life President of WTBA and President of Japan Bowling Congress, Mr Kyohei Akagi; newly-elected First Vice President of WTBA and Vice President of ABF, Mr Cui Zhiquiang of China; and Ms Suwalai Satrulee, Secretary General of Thai Tenpin Bowling Association and Exco member of ABF are the members of Jury.


The championship proper will commence with the Men's Singles event divided into two squads on Sunday. The Women's Singles will take place on Monday, 2nd November in one squad only. The top 8 will advance into the quarterfinals knockout format to progress into the finals.

The Doubles will be held over two days on 3rd and 4th November, again with the top 8 pairs advancing into the quarterfinals knockout stage, semifinals and finals. The Team of 4 will also be held over two blocks of 3 games each on 5th and 6th November.

The semifinals for the top 4 teams will advance into the semifinals and the winners will meet in the finals. Asian Ranking points will be allocated to the Singles event only.

At the previous games held in Macau, China in 2007, Asian powerhouse Korea came away with 5 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze medal to emerge as overall champion. UAE was the only other country which won a gold in the Men's Singles to finish second.
