Malaysian captures Youth Open U21 title

17th July, Bangkok: Amin Zulkarnain Bin Zulkifin of Malaysia captured his first-ever international title after winning the Youth Open U21 Masters finals of the 49th MWA-Thailand International Open Bowling Championships at Blu-O Rythm & Bowl Ratchayothin.

Newly-crowned Hong Kong International Open champion and Youth U18 second runner-up, Nasser Alkandari of Kuwait got off to a cracking start with 278 to lead Sasitha Kaewklom of Thailand by 10 pins. The Kuwaiti's lead was quickly taken by Amim Zulkarnain when he managed on 180 in the second game.

The Malaysian added 268 to his 239 opener to move into the lead, 28 pins ahead of Kaewklom still in second. Amin Zulkarnain led for another game when he downed 225 in the third. Nasser recovered with 256 to move back up to second, just 18 pins adrift.

Singapore's Jayden Loh, who had 222, 237 and 235 in his first three games, almost rolled the tournament's first 300 in the fourth game but settled for 299 to take over the lead. Amin Zulkarnain trailed in second by 23 pins while Nasser was third, just 3 pins further away.

But Amin Zulkarnain fought back brilliantly by ending the finals with 226, 238, 268 and 259 to seal victory with 1961. Loh did well to stay with the leader to eventually finished second with 1914. Nasser claimed third position with 1911.

Meanwhile, Royce Wayne Padua of Philippines bagged the Youth U15 title with a 6-game total of 1327. Joyen Lee of Singapore, who led before the final game, managed only 208 to settle for second position with 1294. Tseng I Wei of Chinese Taipei finish third with 1276.

Malaysian youth, Muhammad Imran Bin Azmi also picked up the Youth U18 Masters title contested yesterday with a total of 1879. Wilaphut Andrew Wong of Thailand, again finished second as he did last year, with 1802. Nasser Alkandari took third spot with 1787.

Taiwanese dominated the Youth U13 Masters finals with Tsai Yu Lun winning with 1354 followed by Tseng Yun-Ching in second with 1304 and Tseng Yun-Chun completing the top three with 1289.

Qualifying rounds, which started on July 12, will continue till July 19 for the Graded and Senior divisions with The Men's and Women's Grade Masters finals to be contested on July 20 at 12.00 noon and the Men's Grade B and Senior Masters finals at 4.00 pm.

The classic format qualifying rounds for the Open division will commence July 21 and end on July 23 over three blocks of five games, in four different squads. The top 33 bowlers will qualify for the finals. The top 3 local and top 3 overseas will earn a bye and skip Round 1.

The Mixed pool of 20 bowlers together with the 7 qualifiers from the Desperado squad will contest the 6-game Round 1 finals. The top 12 with the highest pinfalls will be joined by the six seeded qualifiers for another 6 games in Round 2 finals. The top 6 at the end of Round 2 finals will proceed to the Stepladder Shootout finals to determine the champion.
