Koreans shine in opening squad

19th December, Seberang Prai: Koreans, Han Seong Min of KNSU and Kim Tan Hoon of Sehan University shone in the 50th Penang Pesta International Bowling Championships opening squad in the first block of qualifying rounds by taking up first and third spots while Malaysia's Ethan Damien Goh of ABAS finished second.

Singapore's Jeremy Yeo of Bowling Is Science got off to a superb start shooting 263 to lead ex-national youth, Zaid Izlan of Jiabasics, Malaysia by 16 pins. Korea's Kang Tae Young of Sehan University also started well with 245 to take up third spot.

Izlan rolled back-to-back 247 to move into the lead as Yeo could only returned 199 to slip down to share third spot with compatriot Jarvis Lim. Han Seong Min of Korea National Sports University also rolled 247 in the second game to add to his 238 opener to move into second.

Han had two more strong games of 245 and 233 in the third and fourth games. Despite a 177 in the fifth game, Han remained in the lead. 2023 Malaysian Open Youth Open champion, Ethan Damien Goh of ABAS, Malaysia leapfrog into third, behind another Korean, Kim Tae Hoon of Sehan University in second.

The leader ended strong with 249 to top the squad with 1389 total. Goh finished second with 257 for a 1353 total. Kim settled for third position with 1324. Yeo and Wilfred Er of Singapore rounded out the top five with 1316 and 1300 respectively.

Squad B will take to the lanes after oiling to contest their first block of 6 games. The combined scores will give an indication of the score needed to be in the top 40 advancing to the Masters Finals on December 21.
