First Block leaders Japan, Australia wins Team event

10th April, Hong Kong: First block leaders Japan and Australia wins Boy's and Girl's Team events of the 7th Asian Schools Tenpin Bowling Champion at the end of the gruelling second block of 3 games at Mei Foo Super Fun Bowl this evening.

Japan's quartet of Nobuhito Fujii, Hiroya Tazawa, Yuta Ogushi and Tomoyuki Sasaki never look threatened until the 5th game when they lost the lead to the in-form Malaysian Team A. Despite loosing the lead to the Malaysian by 42 pins before the final and crucial game, the Japanese fought back galantly to eventually snatch a well deserved Gold medal with 5156 total pinfalls and a 110 cushion.

Eric Ang, Adrian Ang and Doubles Gold medalists, Muhd Nur Aiman and Zaid Izlan could not maintain the final crunch and had to settle for the Silver with a total of 5046. Australia's Shaun Parlby, Robert O'Reilly, Stephen Cowland and Chris Slattery finished third for the Bronze medal with 4895 while fourth place went to Indonesia's Erick Ngo, Marco Putra, Fandy Sutan and Enzo Adhity on a total of 4888.

Doubles Silver medalist, Adrian Ang's 1398 assured the 15 year-old his first Gold medal of the competition when he ammassed 4118 over the gruelling 18 games Boy's All Events. Singles Gold medalist, Ray Chuang Duan Rui of Singapore won the Silver medal with 4012 while Japan's Tomoyuki Sasaki brought home the Bronze with 3883.

Malaysia leads the Boy's medal table with 2 Gold amd 3 Silver medals for 19 points. Japan (1 Gold and 2 Bronze medals) and Singapore (1 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 4th placing) shares second spot with 9 points each.


In the Girl's Team event, Australia was a runaway winner with a total score of 4951 and a comfortable 171 pins surplus. Although their lead of 194 before the start of the 2nd block was reduced by the Malaysian Team A in the 5th game, Cassie Staudinger, Sylvia Wilson, Christine Day and Tracey Madden fought on brilliantly to give Australia their first Gold medal after winning the Team event.

Malaysia's Esther Cheah, Lim Wai Jun, Siti Safiyah Amirah and two Gold medalist, Zandra Aziela settled for the Silver with a total of 4780 while Valerie Lee, Sabrina Lim, Denise Goh and Ong She Na took home the Bronze with a team total of 4664.

Star of this year's championship undoubtedly goes to Zandra Aziela of Malaysia. The 17 year-old bagged her third Gold medal after scoring 1337 in


Girls Team Champion
A well deserve Gold medal for the Australian girls

the Singles, 1325 in the Doubles and 1299 in the Team event for a total of 3961 to finish top of the 41 girls in the All Events. Silver medal went to Zandra's doubles teammate, Esther Cheah who totalled 3813 to give Malaysia a 1-2 finish. Singles Silver medalist, Tay Hui Yiang of Singapore settled for the Bronze medal with 3753 total.

Malaysian girls stretched their lead to an unsailable 24 points from 3 Gold and 3 Silver medals with Australia in second with 1 Gold, 2 Bronze medals and a 4th placing on 10 points. Singapore came in third with 1 Silver, 2 Bronze medals and a 4th placing for 8 points.

The top 16 boys and girls who have qualified for the Masters Finals will bowl the first block of 8 games tomorrow (Sunday 11th April) and another 8 games on Monday 12th April. The top 3 fromeach division at the of the two blocks will make the cut for the stepladder grand finals for the final medals.

Malaysia dominates Doubles event on Day 2

10th April, Hong Kong: Malaysia dominated the Doubles event on Day 2 of the 7th Asian Schools Tenpin Bowling Championship when they finished 1-2 in both the Girl's and Boy's division to capture their third Gold medals in the competition after Squad B completed their 6 games at Mei Foo Super Fun Bowl.

Singles Gold medalist, Zandra Aziela and Esther Cheah, who led the Girl's Doubles Squad A with 2632, remained unchallenged to capture the Gold medal. Nur Hidayah and Yap Pui Yee, who topped Squad B, took the lead after the 3rd game and built up a comfortable lead of 119 pins by the time they finished the 5th game. The pair had to bowl 589 in order to topple Zandra and Esther and only 389 to take second overall.

Nur Hidayah and Pui Yee were superb after they knocked down 437 for a final total of 2480 to snatch the Silver medal from Australia's Cassie Staudinger and Tracey Madden. The Aussie pair settled for the Bronze medal with 2406. Indonesia's Shalima Zalsha and Ivana Hie, who finished second in Squad B, ended up 4th overall.

Girls Double Winners
1-2 finish for Malaysian girls with Australia third

Zandra Aziela continued to top the Girl's All Events standings after 15 games with a total of 3255, 90 pins ahead of teammate Esther Cheah, who totalled 3165 for second spot. Third in the standings came Singles Silver medalist, Tay Hui Yiang of Singapore with 3153.

Malaysia stretched their lead in the Girl's medal table with 2 Gold and 1 Silver medal for 13 points followed by Australia with 2 Bronze medals and 4 points. Third in the table came Singapore with 1 Silver medal and 3 points.


Meanwhile, Squad A leader Zaid Izlan and Muhd Nur Aiman gave Malaysia their third Gold medal in the competition after they remained top overall in the Boy's Doubles event on a total of 2701. Adrian Ang and Eric Ang completed another 1-2 finish for Malaysia when they knocked down 2600 to win the Silver medal.The pair led briefly after the 1st game started this afternoon but lost the lead from game 2 onwards. They bounced back from game 4 to regain the lead only to hand it to Hong Kong's Ken Lin Ka Yat and Eric Tseng Tak Hin in the 5th.

Adrian and Eric needed 575 in the final game to topple their teammate for the Gold but did well to score 454 to snatch the Silver medal. Australia's Shaun Parlby and Robert O'Reilly settled for the Bronze medal with 2546. Travis Tay Yi Sheng and Singles Gold medalist, Ray Chuang Duan Rui finished fourth overall with 2528.

After 15 games, Adrian Ang took over the lead in the Boy's All Events table with 3421, 139 pins ahead of Japan's Tomoyuki Sasaki, who totalled 3282 while Ray Chuang of Singapore lies third with 3271.

Malaysia also lead the Boy's medal table with 1 Gold and 2 Silver medals on 11 points with Singapore in second with 1 Gold and a fourth placing on 6 points. Australia and Japa shared third spot with 1 Bronze medal each on 2 points.The Team of 4 2nd Block of 3 games will commence after lane maintenance during which time, the top 16 boys and girls in the 18-games All Events will qualify for the Masters finals which will be played on Sunday 11th April and Monday 12th April.

Malaysia set sights on scoring a double

10th April, Hong Kong: Malaysian bowlers set their sights on scoring a double when Esther Cheah and Zandra Aziela took the lead of the Girl's Doubles Squad A in the 7th Asian Schools Tenpin Bowling Championship while Zaid Izlan and Muhd Nor Aiman also led the Boy's Doubles Squad A.

The Malaysian pair of Esther Cheah and Singles Gold medalist Zandra Aziela was firing all cycliners when they led from start to finish. Esther and Zandra started off with a lead of 79 in the first game and by the time they reached the 4th game, they had already built up a comfortable 222 pins lead over second-placed Australia. Esther knocked down 1307 while Zandra scored 1325 for a total of 2632 and a comfortable 222 pins lead.

Australia's Singles Bronze medalist Cassie Staudinger and Tracey Madden could only managed 2406 for second while Jasmine Yeong Nathan and Singles Silver medalist Tay Hui Yiang finished third with 2319. The Singapore pair was only 10 pins ahead of their teammates Valerie Lee Nai Yi and Sabrina Lim Li Koon, who took fourth spot with 2309.

Zandra Aziela continued to lead the Girl's All Events standings after Doubles event and 15 games played with 3255 from teammate and doubles partner Esther Cheah in second with 3165 pushing down Singapore's Tay Hui Yiang into third spot who totalled 3153.


Meanwhile, Zaid Izlan and Muhd Nur Aiman kept the Malaysian flag flying high when the pair also led from start to finish in the Boy's Doubles Squad A. Zaid Izlan, who is the younger brother of Zandra Aziela, started off with a high game of 268 in the first game and with Muhd Nur's 215, the pair took a slender lead of just 2 pins. But the pair soon found their rythmn going stretching to as far as 156 pins lead from their nearest opponent by the time they reached the 3rd game.

Zaid eventually rounded off a good outing with 1318 while Muhd Nur knocked down 1383 for a total of 2701 to lead Singapore's pair of Travis Tay Yi Sheng and Singles Gold medalist, Ray Chuang Duan Rui who totalled 2546 for second. Third spot went to Australia's Shuan Parlby and Robert O'Reilly with a total score of 2528.

Japan's Hiroya Tazawa and Singles Bronze medalist, Yuta Ogushi who were second in the early stages, fizzled out into fifth place with 2462 behind the Indoneisan pair of Marco Putra and Fandy Sutan on 2485. Singles Gold medalist, Ray Chuang continued a slender lead in the Boy's All Events table with 3271 over Yuta Ogushi of Japan in second with 3265 while Indonesia's Marco Putra stormed into third position with a total of 3248.

The other girls and boys will start off their 6 games Doubles in Squad B after lane maintenance.

Aussie girls, Japanese boys lead first block Team event

9th April, Hong Kong: Australia and Japan led the Girl's and Boy's 1st Block Team events after 3 games at the end of Day One of the 7th Asian Schools Tenpin Bowling Championship at Mei Foo Super Fun Bowl.

The Australia quartet led by Singles Bronze medalist, Cassie Staudinger with Sylvia Wilson, Christine Day and Tracey Madden took the lead from the word "Go" in the Girl's 1st Block of 3 games this afternoon. The Aussies had lines of 877, 841 and 771 and a total of 2489 for a comfortable lead of 166 pins.

Singapore's Team B comprising of Lee Nai Yi, Valerie Lim Li Koon, Sabrina Goh Li Shih and Denise Ong She Na did well to take second spot with 2323 while Malaysia lead by Singles Gold medalist Zandra Aziela with Esther Cheah, Lim Wai Jun and Siti Safiyah Amirah finished third on 2295.

Fourth and fifth positions went to Malaysia's Team B and Singapore's Team A with just 2 pins separating them on a score of 2284 and 2282 respectively.

After 9 games played, Singles Silver medalist, Tay Hui Yiang leads the Girl's All Events standings with 1966 ahead of two Malaysian Girls. 6th Asian Schools Singles Silver medalist Sharon Koh, who totalled 1933 finished 3 pins ahead of Singles Gold medalist, Zandra Aziela on 1930.


Meanwhile in the boy's division, Japan's Nobuhito Fujii, Hiroya Tazawa, Yuta Ogushi and Tomoyuki Sasaki took a hefty lead from the first game but soon found their lead reduced to only 38 pins by the time they completed their 1st block. The Japanese scored 2547 to stay ahead of Indonesia's Erick Ngo, Marco Putra, Fandy Sutan and Enzo Adhitya on 2509.

Australia, comprising of Shaun Parlby, Robert O' Reilly, Stephen Cowland and Chris Slattery finished a creditable third with 2501.

The battle for the ultimate Gold medal is much closer with just 46 pins separating the top 3 teams. Singles Silver medalist, Adrian Ang of Malaysia tops the Boy's All Events table with 2088 after two events. In second position is Singles Bronze medalist, Yuta Ogushi of Japan with 2012. The bowlers will bowl in the Doubles tomorrow (10th April) morning which will be split into two squads followed by the 2nd Block of the Team event. The top 16 from each division based on the 18-games total will qualify for the Masters Finals which will roll off on Sunday 11th April.

Ray Chuang, Zandra Aziela bags Singles Gold medals

9th April, Hong Kong: Squad A leaders, Ray Chuang Duan Rui of Singapore and Zandra Aziela of Malaysia bagged the Boy's and Girl's Singles Gold medals of the 7th Asian Schools Tenpin Bowling Championship at Mei Foo Super Fun Bowl this afternoon.

Ray Chuang, who topped Squad A with a score of 1412 retained his pole position after Squad B completed their 6 games to win Singapore's first Gold medal of the competition.

Malaysia's Adrian Ang led 28 bowlers in Squad B for the first 3 games while stretching from 16 pins in the first game to 59 pins but the lead changed hands when Phantep Bhayakaporn of Thailand took the lead at the end of the 4th game with a 17-pin lead. Although the 15 year-old MILO Junior All-Stars champion regained the lead in the 5th game and needed a 256 in his final game to snatch the Gold, he eventually knocked down a respectable 235 and a total of 1387 to settle for the Silver.

took the Bronze medal while Phantep Bhayakaporn of Thailand who finished 2nd behind Adrian in Squad B took 4th place. The large crowd at Mei Foo Super Fun Bowl cheered local boy, Eric Tseng Tak Hin but he could only managed 5th spot with 1291.


Meanwhile, Zandra Aziela, who also led Squad A this morning, gave Malaysia its first Gold medal in the competiton after she captured the Girl's Singles title with a score of 1337.

Singapore's Sabrina Lim Li Koon briefly led when Squad B started their 6 games only to hand it to Malaysia's Sharon Koh from the second game onwards. Despite regaining the lead in the fourth game, Sabrina only manage two identical 181 game to finish 7th overall. Although Malaysia's Esther Cheah led in the 5th game, she had to score 248 or higher to threaten Zandra solid 1337 for the Gold.

Zandra Aziela, Ray Chuang tops Singles Squad A

9th April, Hong Kong: Zandra Aziela of Malaysia and Ray Chuang Duan Rui of Singapore topped the Girl's and Boy's Singles Squad A at the start of the 7th Asian Schools Tenpin Bowling Championship underway at Mei Foo Super Fun Bowl this morning.

Zandra Aziela took an early lead with 233 in the first game and stretched the lead with a superb 247 in the second game to 36 pins. The 17 year-old student from Kajang, lost the lead briefly to Australia's Cassie Staudinger after game 3 but came back thereafter to top the Girl's Singles Squad A with a total score of 1337.

Singapore's Tay Hui Yiang snatched second spot with a high game of 231 in the 6th game and a total score of 1295 while Cassie Staudinger settled for third position with 1281.

Yuka Tanaka from Japan and Kim Lao from the Philippines took up 4th and 5th placings with 1216 and 1204 respectively.

A total of 21 girls in Squad A took to the lanes at Mei Foo Super Fun Bowl this morning for their Singles event while the remaining 40 bowlers will commence their Singles after the lane maintenance.


In the boy's division, Singapore's Ray Chuang Duan Rui set the lanes on fire after he took the lead from the second game onwards. Ray had lines of 234, 224, 249, 237, 225 and 243 for a total of 1412 and an impressive average of 235.33 to lead by 55 pins from Yuta Ogushi from Japan who scored 1357. Thid place went to Robert O' Reilly from Australia with a score of 1288.

Hiroya Tazawa from Japan, Mohd Noer Said of Malaysia and Kenneth Teo Wei Yang of Singapore, took up 4th to 6th placings with 1254, 1235 and 1229 respectively.

Early leader, Zaid Izlan of Malaysia fizzled out after leading the first two games and finished a disappointing 8th place with 1207.

A total of 27 boys competed in Squad A this morning for their Singles event while the remaining 28 bowlers will commence their Singles after the lane maintenance.

7th Asian Schools Tenpin Bowling Championships officially opened

7th April, Hong Kong: The 7th Asian Schools Tenpin Bowling Championship was officially declared opened by Guest of Honour, Mr Victor Hui, Chairman of the Hong Kong Sports Development Board in a colorful opening ceremony at the Mei Foo Super Fun Bowl this evening.

91 of Asia's boys and girls students had gathered in Hong Kong to compete in the 7th Asian Schools Tenpin Bowling Championship which was officially declared open in a colourful Opening Ceremnoy at the Mei Foo Super Fun Bowl by the Guest of Honour, Mr Victor Hui. Mr Hui, who is also the Vice President of Sports Federation & Olypmic Committee of Hong Kong, China, dotted the eys of the lions to mark the auspicious ocassion witnessed by distinguished guests, VIPs, team officials, participants and members of the press media.

The ceremony began with the march out of teams from 10 participating countries followed by a welcome address by Mrs Vivien Fung, President of Asian Bowling Federation.

Fung thanked the Hong Kong Sports Development Board, Sports Federation & Olympic Council for their continuous support, and the contribution by the commercial sector and individuals to the successful staging of the 7th Asian Schools Tenpin Bowling Championship.


Also present at the opening was Mr. Kyohei Akagi, Hon. Advisor of Asian Bowling Federation, and Hon. Life President of World Tenpin Bowling Association dotting the lion's eyes together with Mr Hui.

At the end of the ceremony, Mrs Fung presented a token of appreciation to Mr Hui for his support and decalring the championship officially opened.

The lion dance was performed by Luk Chi Fu Martial Art Association. Immediately after the opening, the guests, participants and team officials were invited to a Welcome Reception at the Royal Pacific Hotel & Towers for light cocktail.

The first competition event - the Singles will be played on Friday April 9
