Wu Siu Hong bags final Gold medal for Hong Kong

11th August, 2002: Wu Siu Hong bagged the final Gold medal of the competition for Hong Kong in Boy's Masters event when he outclassed top-seed Kim Ko Woon of Korea 431-400 in the final match of the step-ladder finals at the 7th WTBA World Youth Championship at P.S. Bowling, Pattaya, Thailand.

Wu, who was Asian ranked No. 1 in 2001, did not bowled well in the 2nd block and was lucky to finish third just making the step-ladder finals. Wu started with 5 consecutive strikes in a row followed by a spilt and then struck home to defeat second-seed Martin Larsen of Sweden 261-191 in the first step-ladder match.

The overnight leader of the 1st block then went on to win comfortably when he ousted top-seed Kim Ko Woon to take the 7th WTBA World Youth Masters title. Kim settled for the Silver while Larsen took home the Bronze. Zulmazran Zulkifli scored 1 consolation point for Malaysia finishing fourth.

Korea wins the overall Medals table with 1 Gold, 4 Silver, 4 Bronze and 1 fourth to total 26 points. Three countries shared second spot. Thailand ended the competition with 3 Gold medals for 15 points, USA with 1 Gold, 2 Silver, 1 Bronze medals and 2 fourths and Sweden with 2 Gold, 2 Bronze medals and a fourth. 11th August, 2002: Shonnon Plukowsky won the Girl's Masters Gold medal for USA when she ousted top-seed Hong Soo Yeon of Korea 429-390 in the final match of the step-ladder finals at the 7th WTBA World Youth Championship at P.S. Bowling, Pattaya, Thailand.

Shonnan, who will be representing USA in the 2002 AMF Bowling World Cup at Riga, Latvia come October, is the reigning national and national junior champion from 1999 till 2001. She won 3 gold and 2 silver including the Masters Gold at the American Zone Youth Championship held recently at Costa Rica. Started bowling at the age of 5, Shonnan is a first year university student majoring in childhood development.

The overnight leader and top-seed, Kim Soo Yeon settled for the Silver while teammate Kim Ho Jung took the bronze after loosing the first match to Plukowsky 193-213. Kim So Youn finished fourth and added 1 point to Korea's overall medal point standings.

Korea continue to lead the overall Medals table with 1 Gold, 3 Silver, 4 Bronze and 1 fourth to total 23 points. Thailand is ties for second spot with 3 Gold medals for 15 points with USA on 1 Gold, 2 Silver, 1 Bronze medals and 2 fourths. Click here for detailed scores.

Korea continues domination to top Boy's 2nd Block finals

11th August, 2002: Korea continued their domination in the Masters finals when Kim Ko Woon finished top-seed ahead of Sweden's Martin Larsen and overnight leader Wu Siu Hong at the 7th WTBA World Youth Championship at P.S. Bowling, Pattaya, Thailand.

Kim, who was fourth in the 1st block finals yesterday with 1,740, scored 1,747 today for a total of 3,567 to finish top-seed for the step-ladder grand finals. Martin Larsen of Sweden move up one spot to second with a score of 3,564 while overnight leader, Wu Siu Hong of Hong Kong dropped down to third with 3,526. The top three will meet in the step-ladder finals after the lane maintenance break.

Malaysia's Zulmazran Zulkifli came close to a podium finish he scored 3,469 after setting a new championship record with a 289 in the 15th game erasing the old record of 279 set by Marco De Bruijin of Netherlands in 2000 at Dominican Republic.

In fifth position was Jarrod Lean (AUS-3,459), with teammate Jason Walsh (AUS-3,399) in sixth, 2001 AMF World Cup champion Kim Haugen (NOR-3,365) finished seventh, Osku Palermaa (FIN-3,330) in eighth, Son Won Lak (KOR-3,323) in ninth and Frederick Ong (PHI-3,287) in the top ten. 11th August, 2002: Korea's Hong Soo Yeon and Kim Ho Jung finished 1-2 in the Girl's 2nd Block Masters finals with USA's Shonnon Plukowsky in third to make the step-ladder finals of the 7th WTBA World Youth Championship at P.S. Bowling, Pattaya, Thailand.

Hong, who led the 1st block finals yesterday with 1,882, scored 1,673 today for a total of 3,555 to finish top-seed for the step-ladder grand finals. Hong's teammate, Kim Ho Jung, who was in 5th position in the 1st block, did well to move up to second after scoring 3,443 while USA's Shonnon Pluhowsky dropped a position to third with 3,371. The top three will meet in the step-ladder finals after the completion of the Boy's 2nd block finals later today.

Another Korean, Kim So Youn also did well to move up from eighth to fourth 3,324 while England's Zara Glover completed the top five with 3,307.

In sixth position was Sharon Chai (MAS-3288), with teammate Choy Poh Lai (MAS-3,251) seventh, Girl's All Events Gold medalist, Malin Glendert (SWE-3,233) in eighth, Jennifer Petrick (USA-3,231) in nineth and Putty Armein (INA-3,211) in the top ten. Click here for detailed scores.

10th August, 2002: Hong Kong's Wu Siu Hong leads the Boy's Masters 1st Block finals while Korea's Hong Soo Yeon tops the Girl's division on Day 5 of the 7th WTBA World Youth Championship at P.S. Bowling, Pattaya, Thailand.

Wu, the Singles Bronze medalist, took the lead after scoring 1,783 and winning five-and-a-half of the 8 games 1st block finals to give him a total of 1,838. Hot on his heels was Silver medalist, Jarrod Lean of Australia in second just six pins behind on 1,832. Another four pins away was Sweden's Martin Larsen on 1,828. This is one of the most closely tussle for the lead since the championship started in 1990 in Manila.

In the Girl's division, Hong Soo Yeon of Korea had a much comfortable lead over her rivals to topping the 1st block with a total of 1,882. Hong won 6 out of the 8 games 1st block finals. Second was USA's Shonnon Pluhowsky with a total of 1,760 while Malaysia's Sharon Chai took third spot just two pins away on 1,758.

The finalist will continue their Masters finals with the second block of 8 games tomorrow (11th August) morning and followed by the step-ladder Grand finals to determine the champions.

9th August, 2002: Sweden won their second Gold medal of the competition when the Anderson, Olsson, Kempainnen and Larson triumphed in the Boy's Team event with Australia taking the Silver and Korea the Bronze on Day 4 of the 7th WTBA World Youth Championship at P.S. Bowling, Pattaya, Thailand.

The Swedish quartet scored of 5,074 to win Sweden's second Gold medal of the competition after Malin Glendert bagged the Girl's All Events Gold this morning. Australia finished second with the Silver 52 pins away on 5,022 while the Koreans settled for the Bronze with 4,907. Venezuela were unlucky when they came close to winning a medal after being placed fourth with 4,867. Mexico's best showing in the competiton was when they Boys finished in the top five with 4,822.

After the completion of the third event, Singles Gold medalist, Yannaphon Larpapharat won his second and Thailand's third Gold when he secured the Boy's All Events with a total of 3,863 over 18 games. The 19 year-old freshman from Bangkok will be looking forward to doing well in the Masters finals. Osku Palermaa of Finland took the Silver medal finishing second with 3,822.

Although Australia's Jason Walsh scored an impressive 1,315 in the Team event, but it was not enough to snatch the Silver from Palermaa and was content with the Bronze with 3,807. Matt Gilman scored a consolation point for USA when he was placed fourth with 3,792.

After three events, Korea leads the overall Medals table with 1 Gold, 2 Silver and 3 Bronze medals to total 17 points followed by host Thailand in second on 15 points with 3 Gold medals. Sweden moved up to third with 2 Gold, 1 Bronze medal and a fourth on 13 points while England is just 1 point away in fourth overall with 2 Gold medals. USA, who has yet to win a Gold medal made up the top 5 with 2 Silver, 1 Bronze medal and a fourth on 10 points.

The top 16 finishers in the All Events will play in the Masters finals first block of 8 games tomorrow (10th August) morning and second block of another 8 games on Sunday (11th August). This will be followed with the step-ladder Grand finals. Click here for detailed scores.

9th August, 2002: England won their second Gold medal of the competition by capturing the Girl's Team Gold medal with Team USA taking the Silver and Korea the Bronze on Day 4 of the 7th WTBA World Youth Championship at P.S. Bowling, Pattaya, Thailand.

The English quartet of Ann Smith, Donna Adams, Zara Glover ans Lisa John scored a total of 4,728 to take the Girl's Team honours and a second for their country. The win has also given Adams and Smith their second Gold medal after winning the Girl's Doubles Gold yesterday.

Team USA made up of Holly Hoopii, Heather Hoffman, Jennifer Petrick and Singles Bronze medalist Shonnon Pluhowsky could not put up a challenge to threaten the English girls and had to settle for the Silver with 4,657. Bronze medal went to Korea with a score of 4,615.

The Canadian team were unlucky not to win a medal when they finished fourth just nine pins behind the Koreans while the Malaysian team finished fifth after being in the top three before the final game.

At the end of the third event, Malin Glendert finally secured the Girl's All Events Gold, a first for Sweden, when she scored 3,628 over 18 games to average 201.56 despite scoring a low 1,113 in the team event.

Korea's Kim Ho Jung took the Silver with 3,579 jusy three pins ahead of two-Gold medalist, Donna Adams of England on 3,576. Shonnon Pluhowsky of USA missed a medal by finishing fourth with 3,553. Malaysia's Choy Poh Lai made a last effort in an attempt to win a medal but was disappointed to end up only in fifth with 3,545.

8th August, 2002: Son Won Lak and Kim Ho Yoon did Korea proud to win the Boy's Doubles Gold medal with a score of 2,532 from USA in second with the Silver and Korea in third for the Bronze in the 7th WTBA World Youth Championship at P.S. Bowling, Pattaya, Thailand.

USA's Chris Klerk and Matt Gilman came close to snatching the Gold from the Koreans when they finished with a high of 439 in the last game but it wasn't enough to topple Son and Kim. The Americans took the Silver with 2,505 while Korea's other pair of Kim Young Hun and Kim Ko Woon scored 2,500 for the Bronze.

The Japanese pair of Masaaki Takemoto and Yoshinao Masatoki both had a poor game in the sixth with 144 and 169 respectively to drop to fourth with 2,470 and missing out on a medal. Finland's Ville Holmstrom and Osku Palermaa cam home strongly in the last two games with scores of 454 and 438 to finish fifth.

At the end of the second event, Singles Gold medalist, Yannaphon L. leads the Boy's All Events table with a total of 2,585 followed closely by Osku Palermaa of Finland in second with 2,564.

Doubles Silver medalist, Matt Gilman of USA is third just six pins behind the Fin with 2,558 while Boy's Singles Bronze medalist and 17 year-old Wu Siu Hong lies fourth with 2,358. Boy's Doubles Bronze medalist, Kim Young Hun of Korea made up the top 5 with 2,531.

7th August, 2002: Donna Adams and Ann Smith put up a strong performance scoring 2,446 to bag the Girl's Doubles Gold medal from Korea in second with the Silver and Sweden in third for the Bronze in the 7th WTBA World Youth Championship at P.S. Bowling, Pattaya, Thailand.

Korea's Bae Yoo Ra and Kim Ho Jung took the Silver with 2,437 just 9 pins behind England with first squad leader Anna Mattsson Baarc and Malin Glendert of Sweden settling for the Bronze.

Bae and Kim of Korea put up a final challenge and needed one more strike in the 10th frame of the last game to win the gold, but the pressure was too much and both of them could not put up another strike. Japan's Kumi Kukuda and Satoe Fujii shot a high 491 in the final game but was not enough and had to settle for 4th place. Finland's Tuula Kemppainen and Mari Kalliokoski who were second in the first squad dropped to 5th overall.

After two events, Malin Glendert of Sweden leads the Girl's All Events standings with a total of 2,515 followed by Korea's Kim Ho Jung in second with 2,423 while the Girl's Singles Silver medalist, Pan Yu-Fen lies third with 2,391.

The Gold medal from the Doubles has taken Donna Adams of England up to fourth with 2,390 ahead of Singles Gold medalist and the 12- year-old sensation, Angkana Netruiseth of Thailand in fifth with 2,374.

7th August, 2002: 21st SEA Games Masters Gold medalist, Yannaphon Larpapharat won Thailand's second Gold medal in the Boy's Singles ahead of overnight leader Jarrod Lean of Australia in the 7th WTBA World Youth Championship at P.S. Bowling, Pattaya, Thailand.

Yannaphon scorched the lanes at P.S. Bowling with lines of 248, 211, 220, 225, 258 and 207 for a comfortable win totalling 1,369 to bring home a double joy for Thailand on the second day of the competition. The 19 year-old student from Bangkok grabbed the Gold from overnight leader, Jarrod Lean of Australia, who took home a Silver with 1,305 while Hong Kong's Wu Siu Hong had to settle for the Bronze with 1,301.

Chinese Taipei's Hung Kung Yi maintained his fourth position from the first squad into the overall final results on 1,280 while Australia's Jason Walsh did well to finish fifth with 1,272. Singapore's Jun Teng Wei was placed sixth with 1,267 while Ville Holmstrom (FIN-1,266), Osku Palermaa (FIN-1,264), Matt Gilman (USA-1,262), Ryan Lalisang (INA-1,260) finished 7th to 10th respectively completing the top 10.

6th August, 2002: Australia's Jarrod Lean leads the Boy's Singles first squad with a score of 1,305 just four pins ahead of Hong Kong's Wu Siu Hong in the 7th WTBA World Youth Championship at P.S. Bowling, Pattaya, Thailand.

Jarrod had lines of 231, 171, 190, 232, 233 and wounded up with a 248 to total 1,305 for the preliminary lead. Wu had tussled the lead with Jarrod in the first series and briefly took the lead after game 4 but Jarrod's strong last two games finally overtook Wu.

In third place was Chinese Taipei's Hung Kung Yi with a score of 1,280 followed closely in third by Singapore's Jun Teng Wei on 1,267. Three pins away was Finland's Osku Palermaa in fifth with Sweden's Robert Anderson a distant sixth with 1,239. Rodrigo Hermes (BRA-1,228), Zulmazran Zulkifli (MAS-1,226), Falah Yousif (BHR-1,222) and Yoshihiro Kamite (JPN-1,219) finished 7th to 10th respectively completing the top 10.

Angkana Netruiseth wins first Gold medal for host Thailand

6th August, 2002: 12 year-old Angkana Netruiseth, a grade 7 student from Rajvinich School, Bangkok upset a strong field 73 bowlers when she knocked down 1,330 pinfalls over six games to win the host country's first Gold medal in the Girl's Singles at P.S. Bowling, Pattaya.

Angkana, the youngest participant in the field of 73 bowlers from 20 coutnries, was not aware that she had already won the gold medal after finishing her last shot in the final game and she was took by surprise when Thailand National Coach Kim Eui Young gave her a kiss to congratulate her.

Eldest daughter of Anwat Netruiseth, Anakana took up bowling less than 2 years ago and was selected into the Thailand Team last year for the Asian School Championship held at Bangkok. Her game improved tremendously in the last few months under Korean Kim Eui Young who is the Thailand National Coach since last year. "I had not expected to win anything in this championship as I am so young and there are so many good bowlers from all over the world," said Angkana during an interview after her win. "Now that I have done so well, I am looking forward to do well in the Doubles, Team and Masters in the next few days."

Chinese Taipei's left hander - Pan Yu Fen took the Silver with 1,277 and the Bronze went to USA's Shonnon Pluhowsky with 1,227. Sweden's Malin Glendert who was in contention for a medal prior to the final game, shot a poor 135 to drop to 4th place while Finland's Tiia Einola did well to finish 5th with 1,223.

Princess Ubolratana of Thailand declares open the championship

5th August, 2002: The 7th WTBA World Youth Tenpin Championship was declared open by Her Royal Highness, Princess Ubolratana of Thailand in a colorful opening ceremony at P.S. Bowling Centre in Pattaya attended by many Thai dignitaries, Officials and participants.

29 countries will be participating in this year's championship consisting of 114 Boys and 73 Girls to total 187. American Zone is represented by Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Dominican Replubic, Mexico, USA and Venezuela. The European Zone is represented by England, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Poland and Sweden. The remaining countries are from the Asian Zone represented by Australia, Bahrain, Chinese Taipei, Egypt, Guam, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, UAE and host Thailand.

The competition will begin proper tomorrow with the Singles. The Girls will roll-off the first squad in the morning followed by the Boys' first squad. In the afternoon, the second squad of Girls will take their turn and rounded up by the second squad of Boys late in the afternoon. Results will be available when they finish.
