Americans shine in Men's Singles qualifying

9th January, Hong Kong, China: Kris Prather, Chris Via and Matt Russo of Team USA topped the Men's Singles qualifying rounds of Groups A, B and C at the 2025 IBF World Cup while a fourth American, Patrick Hanrahan made the cut for the Top 32 round third in Group D.

Prather won six of the seven matches contested today in the second block to add 18 points and taking his tally to 33 points in Group A Pool 1. Qatari youth, Talal Al Marri finished second with 27 points total. Hong Kong's Wu Siu Hong and New Zealand's Josh Stretton had to win the four-way tie-breaker to advance as top 4 of this group with 24 points.

2017 champion, Wang Hong Bo of China shared top spot in Pool 2 with Singapore's Jomond Chia on 33 points while Thailand's Napat Buspanikonkul and Puerto Rico's David Marquez totaled 30 points each to advance as top 4 finishers in this pool.

China's Du Jian Chao won Group B Pool 1 with 33 points ahead of Saudi Arabia's Abdulmajeed Alaslani in second with 30. Macau's Lam Iek Long and Denmark's Niclas Sorensen made the cut with 28 and 27 points respectively.


Group A Pool 1 top 4, Talal Al Marri, Kris Prather, Wu Siu Hong and Josh Stretton

Group B Pool 2 top 4, Bernie Grueso Jr, Chris Via, Mateo Gordienko and Kenny Kishimoto

USA's Chris Via shared top spot with Mateo Gordieko of Costa Rica and Kenny Kishimoto of Peru on 27 points a piece. The fourth spot went to Australia's Bernie Grueso with 25 points edging Singapore's Nu'Man Syahmi and Hong Kong's Tony Wong, both with 24 points.

A third American Matt Russo cruised into the next round with 18 points in the first block and another 18 points in the second block for 36 points total in Group C Pool 1. Qatari youth, Masaed Al MUraikhi and Macau's Chan Tak Seng tied second spot with 27 points.

UAE's Hussain Al Suwaidi (190) defeated China's Shi Guan Ming (184) and Puerto Rico's Cristian Azcona (180) in a three-way tie-breaker to make the Round of 32 cut. Overnight surprised leader of Pool 2, Ramachandraiah Kishan of India remained unbeaten to win this pool with 31 points.

Bermuda's Levinc Samuels snatched second spot with victory in his final game to advance with 30 points while 2024 Asia Ranked No. 1, Rafiq Ismail of Malaysia took third spot with 28 points. 2024 Asian Intercity Masters gold medalist, Jeremiah Camacho of Guam edged Kuwait's Mostafa Almousawi, 216-201 in the one game tie-breaker after ending with 27 points each.

Philippines' Ivan Malig won Group D Pool 1 with 33 points followed by Australia's Jordan Dinham in second with 30 points and a fourth American, Patrick Hanrahan in third with 27 points. Singapore's Jaris Goh defeated Saudi Arabia's Ahmed Abualreesh, 188-138 in the tie-breaker to claim fourth spot on 24 points.


Group C Pool 1 top 4, Masaed Al Muraikhi, Matt Russo, Hussain Al Suwaidi and Chan Tak Seng

Group D Pool 1 top 4, Jordan Dinham, Ivan Malig, Patrick Hanrahan and Jaris Goh

Overnight leader and perfect gamer, Qi Wan Kang of China won the second pool with 30 points. Thailand's Supakrit Wantasuk and Denmark's Dan Agerbo-Ostergaard shared second spot with 27 points. Macau's Lee Tak Man defeated Costa Rica's Juan Jose Rodriguez, 213-161 to claim fourth spot.

The top 4 from each of the two pools in four groups, qualified for the Round of 32 head-to-head, best-of-three knockout matches to proceed to the Round of 16. The field will be cut to the Quarter-finals. Winners will advance to the Semi-finals and the Final.
