Puerto Rico strikes first gold

12th February, Doha: Irizarry Ramos brothers of Edgardo Enrique and Pedro Carlos clinched the first gold for Puerto Rico at the 14th International Friendship Youth Bowling Championship 2026 in the Boy's Doubles event while Shirlene Wong Xue Lin and Jerlyn Lam Si Ting had another slim victory in the Girl's Doubles for Singapore's second gold.

The first Puerto Rican pair had a sizzling start of 526 in their opening game to lead the first Swedish pair of Eskil Lind and Manuel Layrisse by 34 pins. The second Puerto Rican pair of Jayerick Gioann Montes Sanchez and Pedro Josue Diaz Gonzalez was third with 491.

Singles bronze medalist, Talal Al Amarri and Mesaed Al Muraikhi of Qatar A1 rolled 480 for fourth spot. The leader added 458 in their second game to remain in the lead as Qatar A2 had an identical 480 to move up into second. Sweden 1 slipped down to third.

The second Japanese pair of Saito Daiya and Suda Fumine, who was fourth after two games, shot a scintillating 518 to take over the lead. Qatar A1 shot 460 to remain in second while the first Singapore pair of Brian Ngoi Kai Ren and Aviel Chua Jun Jie had 469, 484 and 465 to move up to third.

Qatar A2 added a superb 480 in the fourth game to move into the lead with Japan 2 slipping down to second. Puerto Rico 1 recovered from a poor 358 with 509 to move back up into contention. Japan 2 regained the lead with 480 in the fifth game.

Puerto Rico 1 downed 475 to take up second with Qatar A2 and Sweden 1 fighting hard to stay with the leading duo. Despite a moderate 440 in their final game, Puerto Rico 1's 2793 was enough to snatch the gold medal. Japan 2 settled for the silver with 2771.

The second Malaysian pair Ethan Damien Goh and Wan Muhammad Zarif Ikram stormed home to clinch third spot with 2734 while Brian Ngoi Kai Ren and Aviel Chua Jun Jie also stormed home to finish fourth with 2719. Both earned a bronze medal each. Competition will shift to the Team event tomorrow with the boys in the afternoon at 4.00pm local time while the girls will contest their Team event in the morning at 11.00am.
