Malaysian, Singaporean takes over lead

1st August, Bangkok: Squad A leader, Rafiq Ismail of Malaysia and Shayna Ng of Singapore took over the lead of the Men's and Women's qualifying standings at the 48th MWA-Thailand International Open Bowling Championships after the second block ended early Friday morning.

Two-time champion, Annop Arromsaranon of Thailand stretched his lead over compatriot, Rattanapat Chatchaisiri to 126 pins as he improved his first block total of 1065 with 1138 for a total of 2203 to lead Squad B. 2024 Hong Kong Open champion, Veronica De Souza of Macau, China also topped the women's side albeit with a lower 5-game score of 909 and 1901 aggregate.

2023 champion, Ramita Sarntong was Thailand's best women, finishing second to De Souza with 1884. In the second squad of the day, 2022 first runner-up, Rafiq Ismail led a Malaysian domination after topping Squad A with 2347. Tun Hakim and Shaqeem Izwan Teh took second and third spots with 2275 and 2274 respectively.

Squad C was dominated this time by Singapore as Timothy Tham shot into the lead with 2319 after a sizzling 1195 second block series. Jomond Chia and overnight leader, Xavier Teo took second and third spots with 2263 and 2216 respectively.

Singapore also dominated the women's side with 2018 champion, Shayna Ng taking over the lead with 2099. Overnight leader, Bernice Lim and Nur Irdina Binte Hazly followed in second and third with 2090 and 2084.

In the final squad of the day, overnight overall leader, John Paul Macatula of Philippines continued where he left off in the first block, starting off with 277 and 266 in his first two games but fizzled off towards the end for a second block with 1127.

Although he led Squad D, his 10-game tally which totaled 2327, fell short by 20 pins and had to settle for second behind Rafiq Ismail in the overall standings. Tham earned a bye to join the duo in third with 2319. Nadia Pramanik of Sumatra Utara, Indonesia led the women's division with 1982 but missed the cut to qualify and ended in 25th position.

Arromsaranon led the Men's local pool followed by Suprakrit Wantasuk in second with 2195 and Sasitha Kaewklom third with 2097. 2023 champion, Ramita Sarntong led the Women's local pool followed by Wassana Sakulrat in second with 1822 and Roengjit Techakiatsujit third with 1814.

The bowlers will resume their third and final block of five games tomorrow. The top 3 local and the top 3 overseas qualifiers in both the Women's and Men's divisions will earn a bye and skip Round 2 finals.

The top 14 Women finishers positioned 7 to 20 in the Mixed pool will qualify for Round 2 finals while the top 24 Men finishers positioned 7 to 30 in the Mixed pool will also qualify for Round 2 finals. They will be joined by the top 4 finishers in the Women's Desperado squad and top 8 finishers in the Men's Desperado squad.

The top 9 women with the highest pinfalls in Round 2 and the top 18 men with the highest pinfalls in Round 2 will advance to Round 3 along with the top 6 seeded Women and Men qualifiers from the general qualifying standings for another 6 games. The top 6 women and top 6 men at the end of Round 3 will proceed to the Stepladder Shootout finals on August 3.
