Final gold medals to Korea

12th December, Hong Kong: Korea equalled their record medal haul of 10 gold medals at the previous games after Hong Hae Sol and Gye Min Young emerged as champions the Men's and Women's Masters of the 5th East Asian Games 2009.

In the all-Korean finals between Hong Hae Sol and challenger Kim Jea Hoon, the top seed started off well with a turkey and despite an opened frame in the fourth, Hong finished the match with 246 for a 23-pin margin over Kim's 223.

The second match looked to favour Kim after he downed four strikes in a row, but an opened frame in the fifth and a gutter ball in the first ball of the seventh game unsettled Kim to end the second match with 166.

The 19-year-old Hong went on to claim his fourth gold medal of the championship with a victory over Kim with 194 in the second match and a 440-389 total pins.

Hong had won the Men's Trios, Team and All Events gold contested before today's Masters finals. The youngster had overtaken overnight leader, Kim after the second block of 8 games were completed earlier with 3874, just 3 pins ahead of his team-mate.

Kim settled for the silver medal despite easily ousting No. 3 seed, Tomoyuki Sasaki of Japan, 236-165 in the first stepladder match.


Meanwhile, the 12th and final gold medal of the championship went to top seed and All Events gold medalist, Gye Min Young of Korea after she defeated overnight leader and No. 2 seed, Hwang Sun Ok, 487-411 over two matchs.

Gye edged Hwang 227-194 for a 33 pins lead and trashed her compatriot, 260-217 in the second match to win her second individual gold and her fourth. Gye equalled the feat set by her team-mate, Hong Hae Sol in the men's division with 4 gold medals.

Hwang, who won the Singles gold on opening day, had earlier defeated No. 3 seed, Son Yun Hee, 204-186 to set up the all-Korean title match with Hwang. The silver medalist looked set to finish as top seed but lost the position round match to Gye.

The champion totaled 3868 at the end of the round-robin matchplay finals over two blocks winning 13 out of the 16 matches contested. Hwang finished second with 3840 and Son third with 3803.

Korea emerged as champions again with a 10-8-4 medal haul at the championship with Japan 2-0-7 effort. Chinese Taipei went home with 2 silver and 1 bronze medal while host, Hong Kong won two silver medals. The next East Asian Games 2011 will be hosted by China in Tianjin.

Korea poise for more golds

11th December, Hong Kong: Korea is posied to capture the final two gold medals of the 5th East Asian Games 2009 after Hwang Sun Ok and Kim Jea Hoon led their team-mates to another dominating performance in the Women's and Men's Masters first block finals.

Singles bronze medalist, Misaki Mukotani of Japan set a cracking pace in her opening match of the 8-matchplay first block Masters finals with 243 to earn the 10 points for the win over her team-mate, Nao Ohishi.

Triple gold medalist, Hwang Sun Ok of Korea trailed 5 pins in second after she beat team-mate, Jeon Eun Hee by 2 pins with 238. A superb 258 from Gang Hye Eun allowed her to surge into the lead after the second match as Misaki continued to trail in second.

As Gang and Hwang fought out the lead in the next two matches, it was Hwang who went on to end the block in pole winning 6 out of the 8 matches and stretching her lead to a comfortable 105 pins on a total of 1942.

All Events gold medalist, Gye Min Young stormed home with 247 in her final match to snatch second spot with 1837 while Son Yun Hee completed Korea's domination with a third place finish on 1817.

Early leader, Misaki Mukotani slipped to fourth spot with 1761 despite also winning 6 matches while Gang Hye Eun dropped to sixth position with 1751, a further 10 pins away.


Meanwhile, Korea also dominated the Men's division after taking the top 3 spots in the first block. Two gold medalist and All Events silver medalist, Kim Jea Hoon took over the lead from the fifth match to cruise to the top spot with 1917.

Kim won five of the eight matches to lead team-mate and All Events gold medalist, Hong Hae Sol in second with 1800, 117 pins behind Kim. Kim Tae Young claimed third spot with 1791 by winning five matches.

Two silver medalist and Hong Kong's strongest title contender, Wu Siu Hong recovered from a poor start to end the block in fourth spot with 1733 winning four and drawing one match. Chinese Taipei's Yang Nien Hua rounded up the top 5 with 1731.

Japan, who already won two gold medals in the Men's Singles and Doubles were slightly disappointing after Shota Kawazoe turned in their best finisher in ninth position.

The 16 women and 16 men will resume with their second block of seventh matches with the eighth match as the position round to determine the top 3 to advance into the stepladder finals.

A dominating performance by Korea

10th December, Hong Kong: Asia powerhouse, Korea put in another dominating performance when they added four more gold medals in the 5th East Asian Games 2009 sweeping the Men's and Women's Team of 5 and All Events on Thursday.

After sweeping the Trios events earlier today, the mighty Koreans turned in another superb showing in the Team of 5 events. The Korean women, who were trailing Japan in the first block by 73 pins, overturned their arch rivals to win the Team of 5 gold medal by a convincing margin of 220 pins.

Singles and Trios Gold medalists, Hwang Sun Ok led her team-mates, Jeon Eun Hee, Shin Bo Hyun (alternated by Gang Hye Eun), Gye Min Young and Son Yun Hee to cruise to a comfortable victory with 6289 pinfalls.

Chinese Taipei's Chein Hsiu Lan, Pan Yu Fen, Yang Hao Ting, Wang Ya Ting and Tsai Hsin Yi edged overnight leader, Japan by 12 pins to snatch the silver medal with a total of 6069.

Haruka Matsuda, Misaki Mukotani, Maki Nakano, Nao Ohishi and Ayano Katai slipped to third after a lack luster performance in the second block to settle for the bronze medal with 6057. Hong Kong bounced back from fifth to take fourth spot with 5792.


Korea's men bagged their second gold medal of the day and sixth for their country when Choi Ki Bong, Jang Dong Chul, Suh Sang Cheon (alternating Kim Tae Young), Hong Hae Sol and Kim Jea Hoon ended the second block with 6716 total.

The Koreans finished 355 pins ahead of Hong Kong's Michael Mak, Eric Tseng, Wicky Yeung (alternating for Cyrus Cheung), Rickle Kam and anchorman, Wu Siu Hong, who hund on to second in the first block, to captured the silver medal with 6361.

Japan's Tomoyuki Sasaki, Nobuhito Fuji (alternating for Masaaki Takemoto), Shoto Kawazoe, Toshihiko Takahashi and Tomokatsu Yamashita settled for the bronze medal with 6282, a further 78 pins away.

Southpaw, Hong Hae Sol captured Korea's seventh gold and his second when he topped the Men's All Events standings with a 24-game total of 5499 ahead of team-mate, Kim Jea Hoon, who clinched the silver with 5407 while Tomoyuki Sasaki took home the bronze with 5407.


Korea's eighth gold medal came from Singles gold medalist, Gye Min Young after topping the Women's All Events standings with 5354. Son Yun Hee and Hwang Sun Ok completed the Korea's domination with the silver and bronze medals with 5324 and 5287 respectively.

Six Korean men together with four from Japan, three from Hong Kong, two from Chinese Taipei and one from China made up the top 16 who advanced into the Masters finals. Korea also has their six women in the Masters finals joined by four Japanese, four Taiwanese, one representative from Hong Kong and one from China.

Meanwhile, Korea has amassed a total of 8 gold, 6 silver and 3 bronze medals so far from five events followed by Japan with 2 gold and 6

Clean sweep by Korea

10th December, Hong Kong: Korea swept the Men's and Women's Trios gold and silver medals on Day 4 of the 5th East Asian Games 2009 with the men winning their first while Japanese men and women settled for two bronze medals.

Newcomer, Hong Hae Sol, Kim Jea Hoon and Kim Tae Young of Korea held their lead at the start of today's second block of 3 games over the long oil pattern with a impressive 712 fourth game to stretch their lead from 41 to 92 pins.

But a poor 68 in their second game allowed their team-mates and Korea's second trio of Choi Ki Bong, Suh Sang Cheon and Jang Dong Chul to take over the running, albeit 10 pins ahead as Japan's Tomoyuki Sasaki, Toshihiko Takahashi and Masaaki Takemoto followed in third.

victory. Choi, Suh and Jang settled for the silver medal with 4109, just 30 pins adrift.

The victory also allowed the Korean men to break the ice with their first gold medal in the competition. Japan hung on to third spot to take home the bronze medal with 4041 while the second Japanese trio finished fourth with 3874.


Meanwhile, the Korean women were unbeatable sweeping the gold and silver medals in the Women's Trios event. But it was the second trio, who trailed their compatriots in the first block, claimed the gold medal with 4044.

Hwang Sun Ok, Jeon Eun Hee and Son Yun Hee immediately settled into the lead at the start of the second block. The trio were able to stretch their lead to 79 pins entering into the final game.

Despite only managing 678 in the last game, Hwang, Jeon and Son took the gold, 74 pins ahead of Gang Hye Eun, Shin Bo Hyun and Gye Min Young, who amassed 3970 for the silver. Japan's Haruka Matsuda, Nao Ohishi and Ayano Katai claimed the bronze medal with 3797.

Host nation's Milki Ng, Chan Shuk Han amd Vanessa Fung finished fourth with 3674, 21 pins ahead of Chinese Taipei in fifth spot.


Gye Min Young of Korea continued to top the Women's All Events standings with 4727 after 21 games played with Son Yun Hee and Hwang Sun Ok occupying second and third spots.

Trios gold medalist, Hong Hae Sol took over the lead in the Men's standings with 4823, 53 pins ahead of overnight leader, Tomoyuki Sasaki of Japan in second and Toshihiko Takahashi third.

The Team of 5 event second block of 3 games will be completed later today to determine the winners. The top 16 men and 16 women in their respective All Events standings will qualify for the Masters finals.

Japan set for more gold

9th December, Hong Kong: Japan look set to bag more gold medals as their women upstaged favourites Korea to take pole in the Team of 5 event of the 5th East Asian Games 2009 at the end of the first block on Wednesday evening.

After clinching a bronze medal in the opening Singles event, Japan's women failed to show up in the doubles a day later. In the Trios event contested this morning, their best trio could only managed a fourth place finish in the first block.

But collectively, Haruka Matsuda, Masaki Mukotani, Nao Ohishi, Maki Nakano and Ayano Katai were simply awesome setting a blistering pace with a record-breaking 1143 to take an 84-pin lead over Chinese Taipei with favourites, Korea in third.

The quartet stretched their lead to 171 pins after another superb 1089 in the second game with Korea taking over second spot from the Taiwanese.

Despite an average score of 970 in their third and final game of the first block, Japan held on to the lead with a team total of 3202. Korea's consistent scoreline allowed them to reduce the deficit to 73 pins with a total of 3129.

Chinese Taipei finished third a further 50 pins away on 3079 as Macau overtook host, Hong Kong to take fourth spot with 2969 leaving Hong Kong in fifth position.


Without capturing a gold medal yet, for once Korea look good for their first victory. Hong Hae Sol, Choi Ki Bong, Jang Dong Chul, Kim Jea Hoon and Kim Tae Young ended the first block in the lead with 3470.

Chinese Taipei had set a cracking pace with another record-breaking score of 1170 in their opening game to lead Japan and Korea, who tied in second with 1155. The Taiwanese quartet lost the lead to Korea after the latter posted 1179 in their second game.

Another superb 1136 in their final game gave the Koreans a comfortable lead of 175 pins over Japan. Doubles gold medalist, Tomoyuki Sasaki led Toshihiko Takahashi, Shota Kawazoe, Masaaki Takemoto and Tomokatsu Yamashita to amass 3295 for second.

Two pins further away came host nation, as Michael Mak, Eric Tseng, Cyrus Cheung, Rickle Kam and Singles silver medalist, Wu Siu Hong ended strongly with 1121 for a total of 3293.

Chinese Taipei settled for fourth spot with 3204 while Guam completed the top 5 in fifth position with 3149. Tomoyuki Sasaki of Japan retained the lead in the Men's All Events standings after 18 games played with 4087 with Korea's Kim Jae Hoon taking over second spot from team-mate, Hong Hae Sol.

Doubles gold medalist, Gye Min Young of Korea also retained her pole position in the Women's division with an 18-game total of 3997 with Son Yun Hee and Hwang Sun Ok dominating the top 3 spots in second and third.

The men and women will complete both their Trios and Team of 5 second block tomorrow. The top 16 men and women in the All Events standings will qualify for Friday and Saturday Masters finals.

Korea tops Trios first block

9th December, Hong Kong: Korea firmed up their Asia powerhoue status by topping both the Women's and Men's Trios event of the 5th East Asian Games 2009 first block of 3 games played over short oil pattern on Wednesday.

Women Doubles gold medalist and Korea's Shin Bo Hyun and Gye Min Young teamed up with Gang Hye Eun to open account with a superb 665 to lead Chinese Taipei's Chien Hsiu Lan, Pan Yu Fen and Tsai Hsin Yi by 10 pins.

Japan's Haruka Matsuda, Nao Ohishi and Ayano Katai drew level after a sizzling second game of 669 as the Korean trio shot 651. Chinese Taipei continue to trail the leading pair by 16 pins.

A poor 528 in the final game of the first block by the Japanese saw them slipped down to end the block in fourth while Korea's first trio shot another 651 to finish in the lead with 1967.

Their team-mates and second trios of Hwang Sun Ok, Jeon Eun Hee and Son Yun Hee took second spot with 1919, 48 pins adrift as the second trio of Chinese Taipei made up of Wang Ting Wen, Wang Ya Ting and Yang Hao Ting finished third with 1852.


Meanwhile, in the men's division, Hong Hae Sol, Kim Jea Hoon and Kim Tae Young will be hoping to score their first gold when they finished the first block in the lead with 2021 after sharing the lead in the opening game with Hong Kong.

Men's Doubles gold medalist and Japan's Tomoyuki Sasaki and Toshihiko Takahashi teamed up with Masaaki Takemoto to take second spot with 1980, 41 pins away from the Koreans.

The second Korean trio of Choi Ki Bong, Suh Sang Cheon and Jang Dong Chul, who was leading prior to the third game, settled for third spot with 1972 while Chinese Taipei and Japan's second trio finished fourth and fifth positions.

Tomoyuki Sasaki has taken over the lead in the Men's All Events standings with 3373 ahead of overnight leader, Hong Hae Sol of Korea and another Korean, Kim Tae Young third. Gye Min Young retained the lead in the women's division with 3358.

The men and women will resume bowling with the first block of 3 games in the Team of 5 event over long oil pattern later today. The second block of the Trios and Team of 5 event will be completed on Thursday.

Another Korean domination

8th December, Hong Kong: Korea underlined their prowess with another dominating performance in the Women's Doubles event of the 5th East Asian Games 2009 after sweeping all three medals with Gye Min Young and Shin Bo Hyun claiming the gold.

Singles silver medalist, Shin Bo Hyun partnered Gye Min Young to give the Korean third pair the lead with a 445 opening game closely followed by Hong Kong's second pair of Milki Ng and Sylvia Kong in second 4 pins adrift.

Surprisingly, it was Hong Kong who surged into the lead after a stronger second game of 444 to Korea's 432, albeit only 3 pins ahead while Korea's first pair of Jeon Eun Hee and Son Yun Hee followed in third a further 5 pins away.

At the halfway mark, Jeon and Son took over the running after a superb 482 game to build up a 55 pin lead over their compatriots, Shin and Gye as Hong Kong slipped to fourth behind China in third.

Jeon and Son saw their lead reduced to 11 pins ahead of Gye and Shin going into the final game while the first pair of Singles Gold medalist, Hwang Sun Ok and Gang Hye Eun followed in a distant third.


However, it was Shin and Gye who finished the strongest with 494 to snatch the gold medal with 2645 as the leader, Jeon and Son settled for the silver medal with 2618. Hwang and Gang completed Korea's domination by claiming the bronze with 2458.

Hong Kong found the pace a little too hot to handle and had to tie fourth place with China's Chen Dongdong and Yang Suiling with 2416.

After two events, Gye Min Young has taken over the lead in the Women's All Events standings with 2690 followed by Son Yun Hee in second with 2649. Shin Bo Hyun slipped to third with 2648, just 1 pin away. Hwang is a further 1 pin in fourth.

The men and women will resume with the Trios first block of 3 games in the morning and the Team of 5 first block in the afternoon. The second block of both the events will be completed on Thursday.

Japan snatches second gold

8th December, Hong Kong: Tomoyuki Sasaki and Nobuhito Fuji rolled a big game in their final run to give Japan their second gold medal in the Men's Doubles of the 5th East Asian Games 2009 at the Hong Kong Bowling City on Tuesday afternoon.

Chinese Taipei's second pair of Cheng Hsing Chao and Yang Nien Hua were locked together with China's Zhang Peng and Pan Yuehong when both pairs rolled 457 in their opening game as Japan's third pair of Tomoyuki Sasaki and Nobuhito Fuji followed in second.

The Chinese was able to take out a 14-pin lead after the second game but gave up their lead at the halfway mark to Cheng and Yang midway through the 6-game event. Their team-mates, Fang Chih Nan amd Cheng Chao Yu trailed in second, 22 pins adrift.

Cheng and Yang held the lead after the fourth but was closely followed by Korea's third pair of Hong Hae Sol and Jang Dong Chul in hot pursuit.

The Koreans took advantage of a poor game from the leading Chinese Taipei pair to surge ahead into the lead with host nation, Hong Kong staking their claim for honours in a close second, 8 pins seperating them.


Despite a superb finish from the recovering Cheng and Yang in the final game, Tomoyuki Sasaki and Nobuhito Fuji, who were 45 pins adrift, stormed home with the highest game of 502 to snatch victory with 2596.

Chinese Taipei settled for the silver with 2564 while the other Chinese Taipei pair of Fang amd Cheng took the bronze medal with 2532. Leader, Korea slipped to fourth on 2517 after a poor final game of 387.

Eric Tseng and Singles silver medalist, Wu Siu Hong also returned a poor final game of 384 to end up fifth with 2515 followed by Korea's second pair of Choi Ki Bong and Kim Tae Young rounding up the top 6 with 2512.

After two events, Hong Hae Sol of Korea has taken the lead in the Men's All Events standings with 2705, 8 pins ahead of Tomoyuki Sasaki of Japan second and Wu Siu Hong of Hong Kong third. Singles gold medalist, Toshihiko Takahashi of Japan dropped to fourth.

The women will contest their doubles after lane maintenance in the afternoon. Bowlers will return on Wednesday with the Trios first block of 3 games in the morning and Team of 5 first block of 3 games in the afternoon.

Japanese scores 300 for gold

7th November, Hong Kong: Toshihiko Takahashi of Japan scored the tournament's first perfect game to win the Men's Singles gold medal of the 5th East Asian Games 2009 with Hong Kong's Wu Siu Hong storming home to take the silver.

The scores went through the roof of the Hong Kong Bowling City as the men took to the lanes for their Singles event. Tomoyuki Sasaki of Japan set a blistering pace with 289 to lead by 12 pins ahead of Joey Miranda III of Guam in second.

Kim Jea Hoon of Korea, who shot 270 in the first game, downed another sizzling game of 268 to take over the running albeit only 2 pins ahead of another Japanese, Masaak Takemoto ahead of team-mate, Toshihiko Takahashi third.

The Korean kept a relentless pace to maintain the lead up to the fourth game with team-mate, Choi Ki Bong battling for the lead.

Despite another superb game of 248 from Kim, a 269 from Choi allowed him to move to the front of the pack and leading by 16 pins. Toshihiko, who was ninth and 91 pins behind the leader, brought the house down with the tournament's first perfect game and allowing the Japanese to snatch victory with 1446.


Hong Kong's Wu Siu Hong, who was seventh, stormed home with a scintilating 269 to win the silver medal with 1431 while Kim managed only 202 to settle for the bronze medal a further 7 pins adrift on 1423 pinfalls.

"I never expected that I could win a medal let alone the gold," said the 26-year-old Toshihiko Takahashi from Gifu, 500km from Tokyo. "But when I had ten strikes, my coach told me that I could win if I scored a perfect game.

"I could hardly believe my luck and to win with a perfect game is even more pleasing," added Toshihiko, who won the Trios silver medal at the 2008 World Men's Championship in Bangkok and brought home his 30th perfect game.

Leader, Choi Ki Bong shot a poor 183 in his final game to miss out on the podium with a fourth-place finish with 1420, just 3 pins from his fellow-compatriot. Four Koreans took sixth to ninth spots behind first game leader, Tomoyuki Sasaki in fifth.

The men will resume competition with their Doubles event tomorrow morning while the women will contest theirs in the afternoon.

Korea dominates opening event

7th November, Hong Kong: Korea dominated the opening event of the 5th East Asian Games 2009 after Hwang Sun Ok and Shin Bo Hyun won the gold and silver medals of the Women's Singles at the Hong Kong Bowling City on Monday.

Haruka Matsuda of Japan set a bistering pace with an opening game of 267 to lead World Women's Championship Trios gold medalist, Tsai Hsin Yi of Chinese Taipei by 23 pins and another Japanese, Misaki Mukotani third.

But Haruka quickly gave the lead away to Korea's Gye Min Young after the Japanese managed only 193 in the second game as Gye took a 28 pin lead after two games of 232 and 256 while Misaki continued to trail in third.

Gye held the lead till the halfway mark, 11 pins in front but Haruka bounced back another high game of 265 in the fourth to regain the lead moving ahead of Gye by 33 pins with Shin Bo Hyun and Hwang Sun Ok making their bids.

Hwang's 258 in the fifth gave the Korean a slender 1-pin lead over team-mate, Shin Bo Hyun with Haruka hanging on to third a further 7 pins away. Hwang finished stronger with 226 to win the first gold medal for Korea with 1405 while Shin completed Korea's domination by winning the silver with 1392.


"After a poor performance in the Asian Indoor Games last month, I had to practice more in addition to spending time in my mental training and self discipline," said the 22-year-old champion, Hwang Sun Ok from Pyung Teak about 60km from the capital Seoul.

"I also had to train harder. This win made up for my disappointment in the Asian Indoor Games," added Hwang, who won two gold and one silver medal at the World Women's Championship in Las Vegas this year.

Asian Youth Games Singles silver medalist, Misaki Mukotani stormed home with a superb 257 in her last game to snatch the bronze medal with 1367 as Haruka missed the podium in fourth position with 1362.

The men will contest their Singles after lane maintenance in the afternoon after which the medal presentations will follow. The bowlers will resume their competition with the Doubles on Tuesday.

Spectacular opening in Hong Kong

5th December, Hong Kong: The 5th East Asian Games officially open in Hong Kong on Saturday with a dazzling 90-minute opening ceremony, including a magnificent fireworks display and special lighting effects which transformed world-renowned Victoria Harbour into a kaleidoscope of colour.

The Games are the biggest in EAG history, bringing together 2,300 elite athletes from nine countries or regions to compete for 262 gold medals in 22 sports. Among the athletes are Olympic gold medallists and world record holders from many sports.

Breaking with the tradition of holding such ceremonies in sports stadiums, the 2009 EAG opening took place on a floating stage in Victoria Harbour, and at the adjacent Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza on the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront, with the city's stunning skyline as backdrop. Hundreds of thousands of spectators shared the occasion on both sides of the harbour.

opening and closing ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics. Highlights included cultural performances, lighting of the EAG cauldron and a parade of beautifully adorned boats representing participating countries/regions.

Chinese State Councillor Madam Liu Yandong declared the Games open, with welcome speeches delivered by the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Donald Tsang, and an EAG official.

The countries/regions taking part are China, DPR Korea, Japan, Korea, Macao, Mongolia, Chinese Taipei, Guam and Hong Kong, China. Eight countries are participating in the tenpin bowling championship which will kick off on Monday.

Teams will take to the lanes at Hong Kong Bowling City for their official practice on Sunday and will start competition proper with the Singles event. The Doubles, Trios and Team events will take place from Tuesday 8th to 10th culminating in the Masters finals on 11th and 12th.

At the last EAG hosted in Macau, China, Korea came away as champions with a medal haul of 10-5-8 followed by Japan with 2-4-1. Korea will again be represented by bowlers who won medals at both the Men's and Women's Championships and are expected to be dominating this year's event.
