Euro-Med Storm International Masters Challenge 2003
Korea's Gu Yong Jin bags EuroMed-Storm Masters title

14th March, Manila: Gu Yong Jin of Korea outclassed the field to win his first international title after capturing the EuroMed-Storm International Masters Challenge at Pearl Bowling Centre this afternoon. Chinese Taipei's Ernie Cheng was second with Singapore's Remy Ong third.

Gu defeated Chinese Taipei's 13 year-old Ernie Cheng 244-229 in the final stepladder match for the title. Gu, who topped the Stage 3 of the Round-robin finals winning 7 of his 8 games roll-off to total 1899 pinfalls finished top-seed going into the matchplay.

In the first stepladder match between 4th-seed Ernie Cheng (1711) and World Ranking Masters 2002 champion and 3rd-seed, Jennifer Tan (1725) from Singapore, Cheng ousted Jennifer 237-209 to move up the ladder.

In the second match, Cheng again was in superb form disposing off 2nd-seed and Busan Asian Games triple Gold medalist, Remy Ong (1777) of Singapore 234-191. But Korea's Gu broke Cheng's winning streak to take the final match.

Malaysia's Lai Kin Ngoh missed the cut for the stepladder finals finishing 5th with 1656 ahead of the only local bowler, Sandy Cotoco of the Philippines in 6th with 1638. Korea's Yang Tae Seon was placed 7th with 1628 while Stage 2 leader, Tim Mack of USA finsihed a disappointing 8th.

The EuroMed-Storm International Masters Challenge was sponsored by Storm Bowling and organised by PBAP-Bowlmart, Philippines.

Tim Mack of USA tops Stage 2 of EuroMed-Storm Masters

13th March, Manila: World Bowler of the Year, Tim Mack of USA topped Stage 2 of the EuroMed-Storm International Masters Challenge at Pearl Bowling Centre to move into Stage 3 ahead of Filipino Sandy Cotoco while Singapore's Remy Ong and Korea's Gu Yong Jin shared third place.

Tim, who made the Stage 1 finals as top qualifier but only finished 9th in yesterday's Stage 1, pulled himself back into the hunt for the title when he scored 2321 and averaging an impressive 232.10 to top tthis afternoon's round.

Finishing strongly in second was AVIVA ABT 1999 Philippines leg champion, Sandy Cotoco from Manila just 7 pins from the leader. Stage 1 leader and Asian Ranked No. 1, Remy Ong from Singapore and Korea's Gu Yong Jin shared third place 46 pins from Sandy.

Renigning World Ranking Masters, Jennifer Tan was the best of the women's finishers when the 25 year-old lass from Singapore finished 5th with 2227 followed by the only Malaysian survivor, Lai Kin Ngoh in 6th with 2221.

Korea's Yang Tae Seon (2202) and Chinese Taipei's Ernie Cheng (2170) both made the cut for tomorrow's Stage 3 in 7th and 8th positions respectively.

The top 8 bowlers will play 7 round-robin matches and one position-round match to determine the top 4 for the stepladder Grand Finals.

12th March, Manila: Asian Ranked No. 1 Remy Ong of Singapore lead a field of 49 qualifiers of the Stage 1 EuroMed-Storm International Masters Challenge this afternoon at Peral Bowling Centre with Kimmo Lethonen of Finland in second and 2002 World Ranking Masters champion Jennifer Tan of Singapore in third.

Remy Ong, the Busan Asian Games two-Gold medalist who qualified in 23rd place yesterday, was in terrific form to lead the Stage 1 with a total score of 2224. He recorded lines of 224, 279, 202, 236, 216, 236, 228, 206, 183 and 214 but only 7 pins ahead of Finland's Kimmo Lethonen who downed 2217 for second spot. Topping the Ladies' division and third overall was 2002 World Ranking Masters champion, Jennifer Tan also from Singapore. Her total score with handicap of 5 pins per game was 2200.

Korea's Choi Yong Jin kept himself in close contention and only 12 pins further in 4th with 2182 while AVIVA Asian Bowling Tour 2002 Grand Slam runner-up, Lai Kin Ngoh impressed to take 5th spot with 2158. The best of the local finishers was C.J. Suarez in 6th position on 2146.

Australia's George Frilingos (2140), AVIVA ABT Grand Slam champion Purvis Granger (2139) of the Philippines, top qualifier Tim Mack (2129) of USA and Ernie Cheng (2125) of Chinese Taipei took 7th to 10th spots respectively.

The top 24 bowlers have qualified for Stage 2 roll-off tomorrow for another 10 games.

Tim Mack of USA tops qualifying block of EuroMed-Storm Masters

11th March, Manila: World Bowler of the Year, Tim Mack of USA topped the qualifying block of the EuroMed-Storm International Masters Challenge at Pearl Bowling Centre with a score of 1457 ahead of Chinnapong Jansuk of Thailand in second and Kim Young Pil of Korea in third.

Tim Mack was in fine form to score 742 in the first series and 715 in the second to total 1457 and leading Thailand's Chinnapong Jansuk who scored 1427. Korea's Kim Young Pil finished third just two pins behind Kim on 1425.

Korea's Gu Yong Jin and Choi Young Jin occupied 4th anf 5th with 1408 an 1388 respectively. The best of the local Filipino was Frederick Ong with a score of 1387 and in 6th while fellow countrymen, Richie Poblete came next in 7th with 1382 followed by Biboy Rivera in 8th with 1379.

Malaysia's Azidi Ameran did well to be placed 9th with 1377 while Moon Byeong Yeol of Korea completed the top 10 with 1369.

The top women was three-time Asian ranked No. 1, Shalin Zulkifli of Malaysia who finish in 13th overall with 1361 followed by 2001 World Ranking Masters champion, Jesmine Ho of Singapore in second and 14th overall with 1359 while local Filipino lass, Liza del Rosario came in third and 16th overall with 1349.

The top 48 bowlers have qualified for Stage 1 roll-off tomorrow.
