Singapore duo tops Doubles qualifying round

28th November, Hong Kong, China: Singles bronze medalist, Shayna Ng Lin Zhi and New Hui Fen topped the Women's Doubles qualifying round of the HKGX 2025 IBF World Championships in Squad 2 to finished overall leader ahead of Japan's Shion Izumune and Kiri Watanabe in second and Kaergaard Nielsen siblings, Sofie and Karen third.

The Danes got off to a superb start in their opening game with 258 ahead of two American pairs of Jillian Martin and Julia Bond in second and Bryanna Cote and Shannon Pluhowsky third. Korea's Son Si Ra and Paek Dam took over the running after a big game of 267.

Japan's pair of Shion Izumune and Kiri Watanabe also took a brief lead with 200, 213 and 246 in their first three games but soon found themselves trailing Denmark after they down back-to-back 211 with Singapore and Japan following closely behind.

Despite managing only 166 in the sixth game, Ng and New ended the block with 214 not only winning the squad but also finished overall leader with 1493. Izumune and Wanatabe settled for with 1489 and the Danes third with 1478. Squad 1 leader of Kim Bo Ah and Shin Hye Bin ended up third overall with 1483 while the Danes occupied fourth.

The second pair of Cherie Tan and Daphne Tan, who finished second to the Korean in Squad 1, rounded out the top five with 1474. Singapore's third pair of Tay Ning and Bernice Lim made the cut in 13th.

Finland's Tiiamari Laukkanen and Jenni Hero squeezed into the next round as the cut in 24th position with a total of 1349. Korea' Kom Min Hee and Jung Da Wun missed the cut by 5 pins in 25th position with 1344.

All three pairs of Finland, Singapore and USA made the top 24 to advance to the Round 2 Matchplay finals while many countries had at least two pairs in the next round. The men will make their Doubles qualifying round tomorrow divided into three squads.

The top 24 Men's Doubles pairs will advance to Round 2. Twenty-four pairs will be divided into groups of six and will contest the head-to-head five matches. The winner of each group will proceed to the sem-finals.
