Narrow victory for fourth seed

23rd September, Busan: Fourth seed and PBA pro, Tommy Jones took a narrow 228-225 victory over top seed, Parker Bohn III in an all-American title match to win the 13th DSD Samho Korea Cup International Open title on Friday.

Tommy Jones of Simpsonville, SC. and 2005-06 PBA Player of the Year, set off with three strikes-in-a-row in the championship match against Parker Bohn III of Jackson, NJ. as Bohn struck in the first but could not get the stubborn pin 7 to fall in his next two frames.

The fourth seed had another turkey from frame 5 to open up a 30 pin lead over Bohn after the latter failed to make any headway and having to spare a difficult 6-7 split in the sixth frame.

A change of bowling ball did see Bohn firing four strikes-in-a-row but managed only 7 pins and a spare in his 11th frame forcing Jones having to mark his tenth frame. Jones delivered a good pocket shot and nearly had a 7-10 split but fortunately the 7 pin fell in the last minute.

Jones went on to spare and shot 9 pins to take the narrow victory and the title. The champion was too emotional after the victory but was congratulated by his opponent and the defiant, Bohn.

"My dad had just passed away this week and I dedicate this victory to him," said the 32-year-old winner of nine JPBA titles, Jones. After the prize presentation, the 2005-06 US Open champion was able to be approached for further comments.


"I was very fortunate to win and I had a lucky break in the sixth frame when a messenger came by to take out the 7 pin to give me another much needed double. Bohn has been bowling great all week and to be able to make this much progress is fantastic."

Jones won the first match against fifth seed and 5 JPBA titles winner, Teruyuki Obara and sixth seed and 2007 USBC Masters champion, Sean Rash, 258-203-224 to face third seed, Park Kyung Sin.

The American sailed past the Korean pro with another sizzling, 237-179 in the secomd match before dispatching a second KPBA pro and winner of 2 KPBA and 1 JPBA title, Kang Sung Yu, 258-224 in the third match.

"I had difficulty getting the carry to put away the 7 pin and I had to make a ball change," said the 46-year-old first runnerup, Parker Bohn III. "I could have forced Jones to strike out if I had struck in the 11th frame but this is bowling and I still take this second as a good run for me."

Jones took home the top prize of 30 million Korean won (approx. US$27,000) and Bohn settled for 15 million won. Kang, who slipped to third took home 9 million, Park 7 million, Rash 5 million and Obara 3.5 million.

204 bowlers comprising of 100 KPBA pros, 24 women KPBA pros, 11 American PBA pros, 42 JPBA pros, and the remaining Korean provincial and international amatuers contested three blocks of 6 games qualifying rounds in three shifts over three days. Women participants received a 7 pin handicap.

The top 36 after 18 games advanced to the Round of 36 semi-finals for another 6 games with pins carried forward before the field was cut for the top 12 Round-Robin matchplay finals. The top 6 at the end of the semi-finals proceeded to the TV finals.

The tournament, a KPBA and JPBA Tour was organized by the Korean Professional Bowling Association and sponsored by DSD Samho Co. Ltd., a top Korean property developer & construction company and importer & distributor of building materials.

A stroll in the park

23rd September, Busan: Top 36 round leader and PBA pro, Parker Bohn III had a stroll in the park as the American comfortably retained pole position after the Top 12 Round-Robin semi-finals of the 13th DSD Samho Korea Cup International Open ended on Thursday evening.

Armed with a total of 5648 from 24 games contested in the qualifying rounds and in the Top 36 finals and with an 87 pins cushion, Parker Bohn III was unstoppable winning all but one match and drawing one to take top spot for the TV finals with 8837.

The 48-year-old southpaw ended the Round-Robin semi-finals 285 pins ahead of his nearest rival after leading from start to finish.

Daejeon Open champion and Korean amateur, Jeong Seong Soo had trailed Bohn for eight matches after winning four of them but fizzled out in the last four matches to drop out of the top 6 as KPBA pros, Kang Sung Yu, Park Kyung Sin and PBA pro, Tommy Jones fought out second spot.

Kang prevailed to take second spot with 8552 winning nine matches while Park finished third with 8490 winning six and drawing one match.

Jones, who was second going into the position round match, lost to compatriot, Bohn to slip down to fourth with 8464 from eight wins and a draw. JPBA pro, Teruyuki Obara beat PBA pro, Sean Rash in the final match to clinch fifth spot with 8423 from seven wins.


Rash claimed the final TV spot in sixth with 8412 winning only four matches but thanks to three big games in the second, seven and 11th matches. All the top four finishers are left-handers.

Jeong Seong Soo missed the top 6 cut by a distant 98 pins from Rash after he managed only five wins for 8314 pinfalls. The second of two Japanese finalists, Toshiyuki Kaneko took eighth position with 8274 while the remaining PBA pros, Mike Fagan and Rhino Page ended in ninth and tenth.

Jones, Teruyuki and Rash will meet in the first TV final match commencing at 3.00pm local time tomorrow. The winner will face No. 3 seed, Park Kyung Sin in the second match. The winner will proceed to face No. 2 seed, Kang Sung Yu in the third match.

American advances in pole

22nd September, Busan: Overnight leader and PBA pro, Parker Bohn III of United States retained his lead in the 13th DSD Samho Korea Cup International Open Bowling Tournament at the end of the Top 36 finals contested on Thursday.

The 48-year-old Bohn III from Jackson, NY., never looked threatened as he led throughout the 6-games Top 36 finals reeling in 236, 236, 224, 195, 228 and 245 for a 6-game series of 1364 and a 24-game total of 5648.

The American finished 87 pins ahead of Daejeon International Open champion, Jeong Seong Soo of Cheongbuk, who snatched second spot with two strong games of 248 and 269 for a total of 5561.

KPBA pro, Park Kyung Sin, who trailed Bohn for two games, settled for third spot with 5521 despite scoring the highest 6-games series of 1479 while JPBA pro, Toshiyuki Kaneko continued to show good form to take fourth position with 5489.

PBA pro, Sean Rash stayed closed to the leading pack to finish fifth with 5474 and a second JPBA pro, Teruyuki Obara, who was second overnight, slipped down to sixth with 5448.


KPBA pro, Im Sung Chul and Kang Sung Yu together with compatriot amateur, Jo Byung Kuk made the top 12 while PBA pros, Mike Fagan and Rhino Page joined Bohn in the next round. Tommy Jones shot a final high game of 248 to make the cut in tenth.

Defending champion and PBA pro, Jason Belmonte missed the cut by 5 pins after he managed only 187 in his final game to finish 13th position. Five PBA pros, five Koreans including two amateur and two Japanese pros advanced into the Top 12 semi-finals. Five out of the 12 were left-handers.

The 12 qualifiers will bowl 11 Round-Robin matches and a position round 12th match and will earn the player additional 30 pins bonus for a win or 15 pins for a tie. The top 6 at the end of the semi-finals will procedd to tomorrow's TV finals.

Players ranked 4, 5 and 6 will meet over the first match and the winner will face No. 3 over another match. The winner of match 2 will face No. 2 seed to earn a crack at the title against the top seed over one match.

Korean amateur snatches lead

21st September, Busan: Newly-crowned It's Daejeon Open champion, Jeong Seong Soo of Chengbuk snatched the lead in the final Squad B of the 13th DSD Samho Korea Cup International Open Bowling Tournament after the third block.

KPBA pro, Kang Sung Yu set the early pace with an superb opening game of 238 to take over the running from overnight leader, Chae Jun Hee, who had a lack-luster start of 203. Kang's lead did not last long as JPBA's Hideaki Aizawa surged into the lead after the 14th game.

Aizawa followed it up with 235 and 226 to lead for another game before Kang regained the lead after the 16th game as newly-crowned It's Daejeon Open champion, Jeong Seng Soo gradually closed in on to the leading duo.

Jeong fired 268 to move ahead of Kang after the 17th game and followed it up with another superb 258 to end the third block with 1427. Jeong's effort gave him an 18-game total of 4158, 69 pins ahead of Im Sung Chul, who stormed home to snatch second spot with 4089.

Sung Chul also registered the highest 6-games series of 1441 in the squad to leave left-handed Kang slipping to third with 4070 followed by defending champion and PBA pro, Jason Belmonte of Australia in fourth position with 4017.

KPBA's Choi Jong In and PBA's Tommy Jones of USA took fifth and sixth spots with 4016 and 4005 respectively while pace-setter, Aizawa dropped to seventh with 3987.


PBA pro and Squad C leader, Parker Bohn III is well ahead in pole position with 4284 and a comfortable 103 pins margin going into the next round with JPBA's Teruyuki Obara retaining second spot with 4181.

Jeong earned third position overall followed by another JPBA pro, Toshiyuki Kaneko fourth with 4151 while PBA pro, Sean Rash completed the top 5 with 4096.

KPBA's An Jun Sang made the cut in 36th position with 3934 with Park Bong Joo in 35th position, 4 pins above. Former PBA pro, Jeong Taw Hwa missed the cut by 7 pins after finishing 37th position with 3927.

American pros, Peter Weber ended in 46th position with 3893, Chris Barnes 57th with 3864, Norm Duke 86th with 3774, Dan Maclelland 107th with 3736 and the biggest upset was current WBT Ranked No. 1, Mika Koivuniemi of Finland out in 142nd.

The top 36 will bowl another 6 games tomorrow with pins carried forward. The top 12 will advance to the Round-Robin matchplay style semi-finals for 11 matches and a position round match.

The top 6 at the end of the semi-finals will proceed to the TV finals set for September 23 and will be telecast LIVE over SBS-ESPN network.

Consecutive pole for JPBA pro

21st September, Busan: JPBA pro, Toshiyuki Kaneko took his second consecutive pole position in Squad A after ending the third block of qualifying rounds of the 13th DSD Samho Korea Cup International Open Bowling Tournament on Wednesday.

Toshiyuki Kaneko had a weak start with 202 in his opening game of the block to see his margin over KPBA's Jo Nam-I reduced from 44 to 14 pins. But 29-year-old pro from Chiba, West of Tokyo bounced back with 248 and 234 to stretch his lead to 87 pins.

American PBA pro, Mike Fagan of Patchogue, NY., closed in to take second spot away from Nam-I as the Korean shot a aweful 151 in the 15th game. Kaneko lead throughout the shift to close his third block with 1366.

Kaneko's splendid run put him third overall with 4151, 133 pins behind leader, Parker Bohn III of United States and 130 pins behind fellow countrymen, Teruyuki Obara in second.

Fagan recovered after a poor 16th game of 180 with 268 and 257 to finish second to Kaneko on 4087 from a 1367 six-game block. KPBA's Kim Yong Han rolled the highest six-game series of 1405 to take up third in the squad with 4038.


Two additional PBA pros, Wel Mallot and Pete Weber continued to make improvements ending their qualifying rounds in sixth and 11th in the squad.

Bohn III, Obara and Kaneko occupied the top 3 spots in the overall standings from Squad C and A conbined. PBA pros Sean Rash, Rhino Page and Fagan took up the next three places.

With 330 over, Mallot looked safe to make the top 36 cut but Weber, with only 290 over might be on the edge. Currently, Chris Barnes occupied 36th position with 3864 and should be pushed out after Squad B completed their final block.

The Top 36 will advance to the finals on September 22, which will see the field cut to 12 for the Round-Robin matchplay semi-finals on the same day. The top 6 will advance to the TV Finals on September 23.

PBA pro sets new benchmark

21st September, Busan: PBA Hall of Famer, Parker Bohn III of the United States set a new 18-game benchmark of 4284 after taking over pole position in the qualifying rounds of the 13th DSD Samho Korea Cup International Open with a record-breaking 1559 series in the final block.

Bohn III, winner of the 2001 USBC Masters and twice PBA Player of the Year (1999, 2001-02), set off on a blistering pace with 280 in his opening 13th game to reduce the gap from 74 to 18 pins overnight leader and compatriot, Rhino Page had on him.

The 48-year-old left-hander from Jackson, New Jersey followed it up with 248 to move ahead of Page after the latter suffered a poor 162 in the 14th game. Another sizzling 290 in the 15th game gave Bohn an 818 series to move clear of the field.

JPBA pro, Teruyuki Obara who almost shot the tournament's first 300 in game 15 with 298, moved into second spot ahead of Page, who continued to slide down the field.

Bohn rounded off with 217, 245 and a superb 279 in the final game to end the block with a record-breaking 1559 6-game series which took his 18-game tally to 4284 setting a new benchmark for the other two squads to match.


Teruyuki finished second with 4181 after a 6-game series of 1461. The biggest mover was American PBA pro, Sean Rash, who improved from ninth overnight to claim third spot in the squad with 4096.

Overnight leader, Page settled for fourth spot with 4096 from a poor 1289 series while Nobuaki Takahashi of JPBA completed the top 5 with 4064. PBA pro, Chris Barnes shot the tournament's first 300 in game 16 but may find himself missing the cut with 3864 in 22nd position.

Two more squads will end their third block of qualifying today and the top 36 will advance to the next round. The score for 36th position is 3774 (174 over) and the estimated cut is around 300 over.

The Top 36 finals will be staged on September 22 which will see the field cut to 12 for the Round-Robin matchplay semi-finals on the same day. The top 6 will advance to the TV Finals on September 23.

JPBA pro narrowly misses pole

20th September, Busan: JPBA pro, Toshiyuki Kaneko narrowly missed pole position by 14 pins despite topping the final squad of the day to finish second overall at the 13th DSD Samho Korea Cup International Open Bowling Tournament on Tuesday.

Toshiyuki Kaneko, who trailed overnight leader and 2006 Doha Asian Games Masters gold medalist, Jo Nam-I by 7 pins, immediately settled to a good pace to take over the lead after the opening game of the second block.

The Japanese pro continued his relentless pace with 222, 258 and 234 to open up a gap of 34 pins over the Korean pro after tenth game. Toshiyuki looked set to overhaul leader and American PBA pro, Rhino Page when he needed only 417 in his last two games.

His 11th game of 213 meant he needed 204 or more in his final game but a split and a miss costed Toshiyuki but fortunately, he struck out to end with 190 to top the Squad A with 2785 and missing the overall lead by 14 pins.

Jo Nam-I could not keep pace with the Japanese and had to settle for second in the squad with 2741. Kim Jin Han of Korea stormed home to snatch third spot with 2730 while American PBA pro, Mike Fagan took fourth spot with 2720.


With three squads all having completed their second block, Squad C leader, Rhino Page retained overall lead with 2799. Toshiyuki claimed second spot with 2785 while Squad B leader, Chae Jun Hee finished third with 2768.

A second JPBA pro, Hideaki Aizawa and Korean pro, Kang Sung Yu rounded up the top 5 with 2760 and 2756 respectively. PBA pro Tommy Jones finished sixth ahead of Jo Nam-I in seventh.

2011 Columbia Cup champion, Choi Won Young, It's Deajeon Open champion, Jeong Seong Soo and Kim Jin Han completed the top 10 finishers after two blocks. The top 36 cut stood at 2630 held by Lee Dong Ho.

Kim Yong Han hovered above by 3 pins in 35th position while KPBA pro Gong Jin Seok finished 37th position, 3 pins adrift. The players will resume with their third and final block of 6 games tomorrow to determine the top 36 advancing into the next stage.

PBA pro cracks benchmark

20th September, Busan: Overnight squad leader and American PBA pro, Rhino Page cracked the benchmark of 2768 set in the earlier squad with 2799 to take over the lead of the qualifying standings at the 13th DSD Samho Korea Cup International Open Bowling Tournament.

Page, the 2007-08 PBA Rookie of the Year, set a blistering pace in the second block with 254, 238 and 225 to stretch his lead over JPBA's Nonuaki Takahashi to 72 pins as fellow countrymen, Parker Bohn III narrowed his gap from second.

The 28-year-old followed it up his 717 series with 236 and 258 but eased off with 198 in the 12th game to end the block with 1407. Page's superb effort gave him a 12-game total of 2799 erasing the earlier benchmark of 2768 by 31 pins.

Bohn III had a better second series to snatch second spot with 1362 and a total of 2725 to give United States a one-two finish.

Takahashi slipped down to fifth as his compatriot, Teruyuki Obara stormed home with 290 and 226 to clinch third spot with 2720 while KPBA's Choi Young Jin finished fourth with 2717.


Page topped the standings with 2799, 31 pins ahead of Squad B leader, Chae Jun Hee in second with 2768. Hideaki Aizawa claimed third spot with 2760 followed by PBA pro, Tommy Jones and KPBA pro, Choi Won Young in fourth and fifth positions.

The current cut from two squads stood at 2600 held by Jung Seo Hak with JPBA Shota Kawazoe and Jung Kwang Hee hovering 2 pins above and KPBA, Kim Hee Jun in 37th position, 2 pins away.

The third and final squad of the day, Squad A will complete the second block of qualifying rounds of the tournament. The third and final block will be contested tomorrow, September 21 before the field is cut to 36.

KPBA pro sets benchmark

20th September, Busan: KPBA pro, Chae Jun Hee set a 12-game benchmark of 2768 pinfalls to head the qualifying standings of the 13th DSD Samho Korea Cup International Open Bowling Tournament after the second block on Tuesday.

The 46-year-old Chae continued where he left off from his opening block by stretching his lead from 14 to 74 pins with a superb 242 opener in the seventh game ahead of his compatriot, Noh Dong Hyun in second.

Apart from a 193 in the eighth game, Chae fired 258, 226, 226 and 213 to end the second block and setting a 12-game benchmark of 2768. JPBA pro, Hideaki Aizawa made up good grounds from an overnight 11th by snatching second spot with 2760 after a splendid 1451 6-games series.

A third KPBA pro, Kang Sung Yu, who had trailed Chae most of the way, slipped down to third with 2756 on a second series of 1385.

The biggest mover was American PBA pro, Tommy Jones who shot the highest 6-games series of 1471 en-route to hauling himself up from 23rd overnight to fourth position with 2751.


2011 Columbia Cup champion Choi Won Young, who almost shot the tournament's first 300 but was denied by a stubborn 10 pin on a 299 opening game, ended with a poor 169 in the final game which put him in fifth with 2739.

Newly-crowned It's Daejeon International Open champion, Jeong Seung Soo finished sixth with 2731 ahead of defending champion and PBA pro, Jason Belmonte of Australia dropping down from fourth to seventh position with 2717.

2003 World Championship Singles bronze medalist, Lee Eun Ok was the best women bowler of the squad after she knocked down 1415 to move up into the top 10 with 2670 behind Noh Dong Hyun and Lee Tae Hyung, in eighth and ninth.

Squad C will resume qualifying round at 1.00pm local time and the highest scoring Squad A will take to the lanes at 5.00pm to complete the second block of 6 games. The third block will be played tomorrow, September 21.

PBA pro takes third squad

19th September, Busan: American PBA pro and World champion, Rhino Page of Dale City, Fl., took the final squad of the first day of qualifying at the 13th DSD Samho Korea Cup International Open Bowling Tournament to move into the top 10.

Rhino Page blitzed the lanes at Homeplus Asiad Bowling Center with a sizzling 289 to lead KPBA pro, Park Keon Saem by 30 pins. Despite only rolling 193 in the second game. the 28-year-old left-hander continued to lead albeit only 8 pins ahead of fellow-compatriot, Parker Bohn III in second.

Page recovered with 236 and 233 in his next two games as a second KPBA pro, Gong Jin Seok surged into second after firing 268 and 214. But the American leader shot another lowly 194 to slip behind Bohn III at the fifth game.

Bohn managed only 194 in the sixth and final game while Page bounced back with 247 to end the block and the squad in pole position with 1392. JBPA's Nobuaki Takahashi took second spot with 1374 as Bohn dropped to third with 1363.

Page's effort failed to topple overall leader and Korean pro, Jo Nam-I as he remained in the lead at the end of the first day with 1449. The second and third spots also remained to JPBA's pair of Koji Kawazu and Toshiyuki Kaneko with 1441 and 1434 respectively.


A third JPBA pro, Shigeo Saito finished fourth with 1411 followed by Squad B leader and KPBA pro, Chae Jun Hee with 1410. Mike Fagan was the top American PBA pro taking up sixth with 1403.

KPBA's Noh Dong Hyun claimed seventh position with 1396 ahead of Squad C leader, Rhino Page in eighth. Two more JPBA pros, Koji Hosoi and Nobuaki Takahashi rounded up the top 10.

The top 36 cut is currently shared by KPBA's Jeon Je Sun and amatuer, Remy Ong of Singapore with 1300. The players will resume with their second block of six games tomorrow and a final block on Wednesday, September 21.

The Top 36 at the end of the 18-games qualifying round will advance to the Top 36 finals for another 6 games with pins carried forward. The field will then ne cut to 12 for the Top 12 Round-Robin matchplay semi-finals.

The top 6 at the end of the semi-finals will make the cut for the top 6 TV finals on Friday, September 23 which will be broadcast live over SBS ESPN network.

19th September, Busan: KPBA pro, Chae Jun Hee led the second squad of the first block of qualifying round at the 13th DSD Samho Korea Cup International Open Bowling Tournament but failed to topple Squad A leader, Jo Nam-I.

Chae Jun Hee had a superb start with an opening game of 249 but had to trail pace-setter and amatuer, Jung Seong Joo, who shot 258. Chae continued to sit in second after rolling 225 in the second game to KPBA's Jeong Tae Hwa, who took over the running.

But the 46-year-old fired a splendid 258 to take over the lead at the halfway mark with a 730 series ahead of Squad A leader, Jo Nam-I as a third KPBA pro, Noh Dong Hyun moved up into second.

Chae ended with 247, 200 and 233 for a total of 1410 but failed to topple Jo Nam-I and had to settle for fifth after the two squads were combined. Noh Dong Hyun finished second with 1396, 14 pins adrift.

Kang Sung Yu took third spot in the squad with 1371 while defending champion and PBA pro, Jason Belmonte of Australia finished a good fourth position with 1367. The best JPBA finisher was Yoshimi Kitaoka in fifth spot with 1353.


The first three spots from the earlier Squad A retained their positions with Jo Nam-I in pole followed by two Japanese pros, Koji Kawazu and Toshiyuki Kaneko in second and third with 1441 and 1434.

The third squad, which commence later today, will feature four American PBA pros, Chris Barnes, Parker Bohn III, Sean Rash and Rhino Page vying for top spots at the end of the first day qualifying rounds.

Players will contest three blocks of 6 games qualifying rounds in three squads over the three days till Wednesday, September 21. Women participants receives a 7 pin handicap.

The top 36 after 18 games will advance to the Round of 36 semi-finals for another 6 games with pins carried forward before the field being cut for the top 12 Round-Robin matchplay finals. The top 6 at the end of the semi-finals will proceed to the TV finals to decide the champion.

Korean pro tops opening squad

19th September, Busan: Korean PBA pro and Asian champion, Jo Nam-I topped the opening squad of the 13th DSD Samho Korea Cup International Open Bowling Tournament qualifying round underway at the Homeplus Asiad Bowling Center on Monday.

JPBA pro, Toshiyuki Kaneko set off to a blistering pace with a 289 opener to lead Korean amatuer, Kim Jin Han by 12 pins and PBA pro, Mike Fagan of the United States a further 8 pins away in third.

Kaneko's lead was short-lived as 2006 Doha Asian Games Masters gold medalist, Jo Nam-I surged into the lead with 247 and 259 in his first two games as the Japanese pro trailed by 2 pins.

A strong 279 from another JPBA pro, Koji Kawazu of Eagle Bowl, Japan gave him a 3-game series of 734 to take over the running at the halfway mark after Nam-I managed a poor 182. Kawazu held the lead for another game before Nam-I bounced back 268 and 245 to end the first block in pole position with 1449.

Kawazu settled for second with 1441, 8 pins adrift despite finishing strongly with 244 while early pace-setter, Kaneko took third spot with 1434. JPBA pros featured well in this squad with Shigeo Saito in fourth with 1411.


The best American PBA pro was Mike Fagan completing the top 5 surpassing the 1,400-mark with 1403. Norm Duke, Wes Malott and Pete Weber put in a respectable show by finishing tenth to 12th positions.

Another 68 players will take to the lanes for the second shift of the day at 1.30pm local time while the last shift will bowl their first block at 5.00pm.

204 bowlers comprising of 100 KPBA pros, 24 women KPBA pros, 11 American PBA pros, 42 JPBA pros, Korean provincial and international amatuers will contest three blocks of 6 games qualifying rounds in three squads over the next three days. Women participants receives a 7 pin handicap.

The champion will pocket 30 million Korean won (approx. US$27,000) top prize from a total of 110 million Korean won. The tournament is organized by the Korean Professional Bowling Association sponsored by DSD Samho Co. Ltd., a top Korean property developer & construction company and importer & distributor of building materials.
