Malaysian shoots second 300 for overall lead

11th June, Kuching: Muhammad Hazim Bin Ali Hanafiah of Sunway Megalanes shot the the second perfect game of the Sarawak International Open Bowling Championships 2024 topping Squad B and leading the Open Division overall standings after all squads have completed their first block of qualifying rounds.

2024 Singapore International Open second runner-up, Rafiq Ismail of Malaysian National Podium squad had rolled the tournament's first 300 in the third game of his qualifying rounds in Squad A. Rafiq had a sizzing 269 before his perfect game and fired another stunning 278 in his fourth and last game to lead the squad with 1044.

Nada Nawwarah Binti Abdul Jalil of Malaysia was the top women finisher coming in second to Rafiq with 957 followed by 2024 Malaysian Open second runner-up, Natasha Roslan, another Malaysian National Podium squad member, in third with 934.

Muhammad Hazim Bin Ali Hanafiah of Team Sunway Megalanes stole the limelight in second squad when he fired 12 consecutive strikes to deliver the second perfect game of the tournament.

The 23-year-old went on to reel in 236, 239 before setting the lanes ablazed again with 279 to win the squad with 1054 and take over the overall top spot, 10 pins better than Rafiq. Tun Hakim of Malaysia finished second to Muhammad Hazim with 966 while 9-time PBA Tour winner, Dominic Barrett of Great Bentley, England took third spot with 946. Hakim ended up third overall and Barrett sixth. Debutant, Musaab Salim Abdullah Hamdan Al Adawi of Oman impressed after winning Squad C albeit with 947.

Sabati Cup champion, Nyak Arif Hakimi Bun Nyak Mazlan of Team MMBC settled for second after setting 930 the pace in the first three games. Musaab ended up in seventh overall and Nyak Arif Hakimi in 12th position. Sabah's Emmanuel Fo Yung Khee clinched the final squad of the day with 981.

Ex-international, Phumin Klanbida of Thailand, who had led before the last game, settled for second with 960 while early pace-setter, Wynsten Wang of Singapore finished third with 926. 19-year-old Fo finished third overall, pushing Tun Hakim down to fourth.

Phumin finished fifth overall ahead of Nada Nawwarah Binti Abdul Jalil in sixth. The Omani was seventh and Barrett eighth. The bowlers will resume their qualifying rounds with the second block of four games. At the end of the rounds, bowlers have an option to contest the one-game Joker Squad which they can use to replace their lowest game scores in their qualifying rounds.

The Top 60 in the overall standings will qualify for the Masters Finals scheduled for June 15. There will also be 60 qualifiers in the Classified Division and another 60 in the Youth 25 and Under division.
