First gold medal for Ulsan, second for Shah Alam

13th November, Jakarta: Park Sang Jin and Choi Won Seok bagged Ulsan's first gold medal of the 37th Asian Intercity Bowling Championship with victory in the Men's Doubles final while Junaidi twins, Nurul Ayunni and Singles gold medalist, Nurul Alyssa captured Shah Alam's second gold in the Women's Doubles final.

The Ulsan pair did not give the second Jakarta pair of Paolo M. Hernandez and Patrick M. Hernandez much chance after they took a big lead with seven strikes-in-a-row. Despite fighting back brilliantly, the Hernandez sibling had to settle for the silver medal losing to Ulsan, 247-289.

Park and Choi had earlier edged another Jakarta pair of Charlie Christian and Pradana Yogatama, 248-239 to advance to the final. Paolo and Patrick ousted top-seed, Syed Muhd Hafiz Syed Hussein and Singles silver medalist, Muhd Nur Aiman of Subang Jaya, 235-228 to face the Koreans.

Jakarta 2 and Subang Jaya 1 took home the bronze medal. Meanwhile, Subang Jaya finally won their gold medal after settling for two silver medal in the earlier Singles finals and one in the Women's Senior Doubles.


Men's Doubles medalists, Jakarta 2, Ulsan 1, Jakarta 1 and Subang Jaya 1

The first Subang Jaya pair of Ken Ng Cheng Keng and Eddie Tong Joo Siong narrowly defeated fourth-seed Engku Mohammad Fadzrul and Sulaiman Bin Ramli of Kuala Lumpur 2, 198-196 to capture their first gold medal of the championship. The second-seed Subang Jaya 1 had sailed past third-seed of Sukinto Wijaya and Irsan Djundijung of Jakarta 2, 254-172 to reach the final.

Kuala Lumpur 2 also narrowly defeated top-seed, Sam Lim Kun and Singles gold medalist, Henry Hui Cheuk Ho of New Territories, 190-173 to earn their spot in the final. New Territories and Jakarta earned the bronze medal while Kuala Lumpur settled for the silver medal.

Third-seed, Rusmawati Binti Din and Siti Zariah Binti Suradi of Selayang, upset the much fancied Subang Jaya pair of Poziah Atan and Datin Rakiah Binti Ali, with a 184-171 victory in the final of their first championship debut.

They had earlier edged second-seed, Maulida Marthiana and Sri Retno Pancaningsih of Jakarta in the semi-finals with a 195-176 win to advance to the final. Poziah and Datin Rakiah eliminated top-seed, Kim Ji Myoung and Singles bronze medalist, Yang Young Ja of Jeju, 231-192 to face Selayang.

Poziah Atan and Datin Rakiah settled for the silver medal, Subang Jaya's third silver thus far. Jeju and Jakarta earned a brzone medal each. AIBC First Vice President, Mr Richard Lai presented the medals and mascots to Singles winners while AIBC Second Vice-President, Mr James Dela Cruz gave away the medals and mascots to the Doubles winners.

Competition will shift to the Team of 4 with the Men and Women divisions immediately following the medal ceremony. The Senior Men and Senior Women will contest their Team of 4 tomorrow morning. The top 4 teams will advance to the medal rounds thereafter.
