Sarawakians sweep Youth Open titles

28th April, Petaling Jaya: Sarawakians, Ethan Damien Goh of ABAS and national youth member, Nur Hazirah Binti Ramli swept the Youth Boys and Girls Masters titles of the 42nd Malaysian International Open 2024 on Sunday evening.

Goh led from start to finish for a convincing victory with an 8-game total of 1732. The champion got off to a cracking pace with a sizzling 258, 27 pins ahead of fellow national youth team-mate, Megat Zaqrul Haiqal. The two-handed youngster added another superb game of 256 to extend his lead to 45 pins.

Fellow Sarawakian, Tsen Fan Yew also added a superb game of 257 to his 212 opener to move into second as Megat Zaqrul dropped down the field with a poor 186. Goh was simply too good for the field reeling in 237 and 234 to strech his lead to 75 pins.

But Goh could not keep up that strong pace and despite managing 189, 192, 178 and 188, the leader held on to clinch the title. Blake Walsh of Australia ended strongly with 243 to snatch second position with 1683 from Tsen, who trailed Goh most of the way.

Tsen finished third with 1679. Top Men's Open local qualifier, Izz Naqiuddin Putera and Wilayah Persekutuan Sukma squad member, Amin Zulkarneein round out the top 5 with 1659 and 1603 respectively.

In the Girl's Open division, national youth squad member and 2023 Storm-U22 GenZ champion, Nur Hazirah Binti Ramli gave Sarawak a double celebration after she snatched the title from pace-setter, Hazel Tan Wei Ning of Singapore in the final game.

Nur Hazirah had trailed Tan by 63 pins going into the eighth and final game. The champion blitzed the lanes with a stunning 266 to win by 33 pins with a total of 1719. Tan stumbled to a low 170 in her last game to settle for second with 1686.

Noratiqah Syauqina of MSN Perak clinched third position with 1618 after a superb game of 233 in her last game. National youths, Anis Hannani Binti Romzi and Adelia Nur Binti Irwan Syazalee completed the top 5 with 1617 and 1600 respectively.

Ethan Damien Goh picked up RM8,000 as Boys Open champion while Nur Hazirah took home RM5,000 as Girls Open champion. Mr Robert Lu, Senior Vice President of MTBC was on hand to present the prizes. The Men and Women Senior Masters will be contested later today.

The top 4 local men and top 4 overseas men will skip Round 1 finals. Local qualifiers positioned 5 to 12 and overseas qualifiers positioned 5 to 12 along with the top 13 qualifiers in the Mixed pool and top 4 from the desperado squad will contest Round 1 finals on May 4.
