Malaysians seal top spots at end of qualifying

2nd August, Bangkok: Overnight leader, Rafiq Ismail of Malaysia sealed the Men's Open top qualifying spot of the 48th MWA-Thailand International Open Bowling Championships with compatriot, Gillian Lim taking over the Women's top spot at the end of the third block.

The final day of qualifying started off with Squad C consisting of mostly Singapore bowlers. Timothy Tham led a top three Singaporean finishers with a 15-game tally of 3430. Jomond Chia ended in second with 3383 while first block squad C, Xavier Teo finished third with 3280.

Overnight leader, Shayna Ng started off brilliantly with 246 and 226 in her first two games but fizzled off poorly with 148, 180 and 164 yet managed to top the women's division with 3103. First block leader, Bernice Lim settled for second with 3074 while Nur Irdina Bte Hazly took third spot with 3071.

In Squad D, Filipinos, John Paul Macatula and Artegal Barrientos ended the third block one-two with 3329 and 3197 total respectively. Jordan Dinham of Australia leapfrog into third with 3173. Sumatra Utara's Nadia Pramanik and Aldila Indryati also finished one-two in the women's division with 2985 and 2862.


Top overseas qualifiers, Rafiq Ismail and Gillian Lim

Malaysians again dominated Squad A next with overnight leader, Rafiq Ismail sealing top spot with 3479. Tun Hakim hauled himself into second spot with 3406 while Shaqeem Izwan Teh took third spot with 3368. 2024 Malaysian Open champion, Gillian Lim ended with 248 and 280 to snatch top spot with 3103 in the women's division.

Natasha Roslan of Malaysia finished second with 3096 while Lara Posadas Wong of Philippines took third spot in the squad with 3095. Lim tied with Shayna Ng in the overall standings and Roslan joined the duo as the top 3 Women's overseas qualifiers to skip Round 2 finals.

Rafiq Ismail topped the Men's overseas qualifiers followed by Timothy Tham in second and Tun Hakim in third who will also skip Round 2 finals. Supakrit Wantasuk of Thailand is the cut for the Men's division in 30th position of the Mixed pool with 3131.

Hazel Tan of Singapore is the cut in 20th position in the Women's Mixed pool. Two-time Thailand Open champion, Annop Arromsaranon, who topped Squad B, led another two-time champion, Yannaphon Larpapharat in second and Phumin Klanbida in third for the top 3 local men qualifiers. 2023 champion, Ramita Sarntong, Chawakorn Wutti and Wassana Zakulrat were the top 3 local women qualifiers.

The cut may change after the final Squad B complete their third block of qualifying. A one-game Desperado squad will be held which will allow the top 8 men and the top 4 women finishers to qualify for Round 2 finals.

The top 14 Women finishers positioned 7 to 20 in the Mixed pool will qualify for Round 2 finals while the top 24 Men finishers positioned 7 to 30 in the Mixed pool will also qualify for Round 2 finals. They will be joined by the top 4 finishers in the Women's Desperado squad and top 8 finishers in the Men's Desperado squad.

The top 9 women with the highest pinfalls in Round 2 and the top 18 men with the highest pinfalls in Round 2 will advance to Round 3 along with the top 6 seeded Women and Men qualifiers from the general qualifying standings for another 6 games. The top 6 women and top 6 men at the end of Round 3 will proceed to the Stepladder Shootout finals on August 3.
