Malaysian national ends qualifying in top spot

20th December, Seberang Prai: Syafiq Ridhwan, the Malaysia National Podium member, ended the two blocks of qualifying rounds of the 50th Penang Pesta International Bowling Championships by topping the overall standings and Squad B followed by team-mate, Nur Syazwani Sahar in second and Hardy Rachmadian of Indonesia third.

Overnight leader, Ridhwan had his 13-pin leader wiped off after Nur Syazwani started the second block with 222 plus a 12-pin handicap while the leader shot 220. Nur Syazwani continued to set the pace with 212 in the eighth game to stretch her lead to 32 pins as Ridhwan struggled on a 193.

Ridhwan recovered with a superb 251 in the ninth game to regain the lead. Nur Syazwani managed only 193 to slip behind her team-mate. Rachmadian rolled 234, 225 and 203 from game 7 to 9 to moved up into third spot. With another two good games from Ridahwan saw the leader extend his lead to 98 pins.

Ridhwan could afford to ease off with 188 in his final game to end the second block with 1334 for a 12-game total of 2705. Nur Syazwani held on to second position with 1268 for a 12-game total of 2646. The Indonesian finished with 1300 and 2607 total to take up third spot.


Block 2 Squad B Top 3, Nur Syazwani, Syafiq Ridhwan and Hardy Rachmadian

Oh Jin Won of Ulsan, Korea and Rattanapat Chatshaisiri of Thailand completed the top five with 2590 and 2558 respectively. After the two squads were combined, Ridhwan topped the overall qualifying standings followed by Squad A leader, Jang Dong Chul of Ulsan, Korea in second with 2684 total.

Ethan Damien Goh of ABAS, Malaysia, who was second to the Korean, settled for third position with 2658. Nur Syanwani and Ryou Ho Jin rounded out the top five with 2646 and 2639 respectively. The cut for the finals in 48th position went to KPBA bowler, Kim Sun Tae of Korea with 2458 pinfalls.

The top 48 with the highest total from combined squads will qualify for tomorrow's 8 games Mixed Masters Finals scheduled at 10:00am. The top 3 with the highest score at the end of the eight games will proceed to the Stepladder Shootout Finals.
