Korea rules Doubles after two squads

18th September, Bangkok: Squad 1 Women's Doubles leader, Jung Da Wun and Baek Seung Ja of Korea remained the leader after two squads were completed at the 27th MWA Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships 2024 while Hwang Dong Wook and Lee Ik Kyu of Korea overtook Squad 1 leader, Malaysia for the lead.

Jung and Baek amassed a total of 2510 pinfalls in the opening squad of the Women's Doubles earlier in the morning. China's first pair of Zhang Yu Hong and Wang Xin Lin finished in a distant second with 2326, 184 pins adrift while Colleen Pee and Singles gold medalist, Daphne Tan of Singapore managed third spot with 2310.

In the second squad, Singapore's second pair of Shayna Ng and Bernice Lim took the early lead with 435 in their opening game but was quickly overtaken by Korea's second pair of Kim So Yeon and Jeong Jeong Yoon after the second game.

The Korean held on to the lead up to the halfway mark and lost the lead to Malaysia's first pair of Nur Syazwani Sahar and Nora Lyana Nastasia. The Malaysian duo added another superb game in the fifth and look on course to overhaul Squad 1 leader.

But a disastrous 299 in their sixth and final game saw their hopes dashed. Although they topped the second squad with 2450, they fell short by 60 pins to settle for second. Kim and Jeong finished second to the Malaysian pair with 2441 and third overall.

In the Men's division, Malaysia's first pair of Izz Naqiuddin Putera and Singles silver medalist, Hafiz Zainuddin topped the first squad with 2592. Kang Myung Jin and Kim Kyung Min of Korea finished second with 2583, just 9 pins away. Japan's first pair of Sho Saito and Takuya Miyazawa took third spot with 2531.

In the second squad, Philippines' second pair of Mark Jesus San Jose and John Paule Macatula made the early running but was overtaken by China's first pair of Chi Ming Yu and Shi Guang Ming after the fourth game. The second Korean pair of Lee Ik Kyu and Hwang Dong Wook moved into the lead after the fifth game.

The Korean only needed 420 or more in their sixth and final game to overhaul the Malaysian leader of Squad 1. Lee and Hwang prevailed to bring home 423 to clinch top spot in the squad with 2596 but crucially became the new leader.

The Chinese pair ended in second to the Korean pair with 2552 but finished fourth overall. Japan's second pair of Tomoyuki Sasato nd Yuki Murahama, who was third in this squad ended up in sixth. Izz Naqiuddin and Hafiz Zainuddin settled for second overall while the first Korean pair of Kang and Kim took third spot.

Squad 3 and Squad 4 will contest their Doubles preliminaries tomorrow and the top three with the highest pinfalls from the combined four squads will determine the winners of the Doubles event. The medal ceremony for both the Singles and Doubles will be held immediately thereafter. Competition will shift to the Trios event for the next two days with the Men's division divided into two squads while the Women's division in just one squad.
