Double celebrations for Malaysia

19th September, Bangkok: Sin Li Jane-Natasha Roslan and Tun Hakim-Shaqeen Izwan Teh remained unchallenged after the last squad to give Malaysia a double celebration by capturing the Women's and Men's Doubles gold medals of the 27th MWA Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships 2024.

Korean's first women pair of Jung Da Wun and Baek Seung Ja had topped the Doubles after two squads last night with 2510 ahead of Malaysia's first pair of Nur Syazwani Sahar and Nora Lyana Nastasia in second with 2450 and the second Korean pair of Kim So Yeon and Jeong Jeong Yoon in third with 2441.

Malaysia's second pair of Sin and Roslan got off the block of the third squad with a sizzling 491 in their opening game earlier this morning. The duo followed it up with 468 and 456 to open up a huge gap over their nearest rival. Despite dropping off their pace in the second half, the Malaysian topped the squad with 2614 to overhaul the overnight leader.

The third Korean pair of Kim Min Hee and Ka Yun Mi finished in a distant second with 2417, 197 pins adrift. Japan's third pair of Mao Kondo and Yuri Sato led from start up to the fifth game.

The third pair of Faten Najihah Amad Faik and Gillian Lim snatched top spot in their final game with 2420. The Japanese duo settled for second with 2414 while the third Singapore pair of New Hui Fen and Cherie Tan finished third with 2394. Sin and Roslan were unchallenged to seal victory. Jung and Baek settled for the silver while Squad 2 leader, Nur Syazwani and Nora Lyana clinched the bronze.

In the Men's division, Korea's second pair of Lee Ik Kyu and Hwang Dong Wook overhauled Squad 1 leader of Izz Naqiuddin and Hafiz Zainuddin to become the overnight leader with 2596. The second Malaysian pair of Shaqeem Izwan Teh and Tun Hakim topped the third squad to become the new leader with 2647.

The third Korean pair of Park Dong Hyuk and Bae Jung Hun, who was battling for the lead with the Malaysians, settled for second with 2615 while Australia's Blayne Fletcher finished third with 2515. Singles gold medalist, Rafiq Ismail of Malaysia along with Singles bronze medalist, Syafiq Ridhwan topped the final squad with 2588.

But they could not beat their team-mates to end up in fifth overall. Shaqeem and Hakim gave Malaysia the double celebration after the women had also captured the gold medal. The two Korean pairs settled for the silver and bronze medals.

Mr Jeong Suk, newly appointed Vice President (Far East Region) of ABF and President of Korea Bowling Association was on hand to present the medals to the winners in the ceremony held immediately thereafter. Mr Kanan Ramachandran, ABF Executive Committee Member gave away the bowling mascots.

Competition will now shift to the Trios preliminaries over two blocks of three games in the next two days. The men will be split into two squads while there will only be one squad for the women.
