Petaling Jaya steals limelight in Team Finals

30th October, Shah Alam: Petaling Jaya picked up two gold medals in the Men and Senior Men Team event of the 36th Asian Intercity Bowling Championship while Kuala Lumpur and Paranaque took the Senior Women and Women Team gold medals.

Muhd Nur Aiman, Zaid Izlan, Syed Mohammad Hafiz and Syafiq Ridhwan edged Otto Leung, Alger Pak, Henry Hui and Stanley Lau of New Territories in the closely fought high-scoring final match to win the Men Team gold medal, 243-239. The champion sailed past fourth-seed, Singapore, 256-182 victory in the semi-final to reach the gold medal round.

New Territories has a 178-173 narrow victory over Shah Alam B in the other semi to face top-seed, Petaling Jaya but had to settle for the silver medal. Shah Alam B and Singapore were awarded a bronze medal each as losing semi-finalists.

In yesterday's 3-game preliminaries, Petaling Jaya topped the field with 2526, 47 pins ahead of New Territories in second with 2479. Shah Alam finished third with 2474 while Singapore clinched the fourth and final medal round spot with 2461.

Fourth-seed, Darren Lau, Joe Tay, Eddie Tong and Y.H. Ng added another gold medal for Petaling Jaya after beating arch-rival Kuala Lumpur, 186-172 in the Senior Men Team final. They defeated top-seed, Pasay 194-154 in the semi-final match en-route to the final.

Kuala Lumpur sailed past third-seed, Shah Alam A, 204-160 in the other semi-final match. Pasay, who settled for the bronze medal, topped yesterday's 3-game preliminaries with 2208. Kuala Lumpur's Wan Rohadi B Wan Hassan, Mohd Nor B Mahmud, Sunny Koh and Shazally B Mohd Khamis finished second with 2179.

Shah Alam A and Petaling Jaya advanced in third and fourth positions with 2158 and 2137 respectively. Kowloon missed the cut for the medal rounds after finishing fifth with 2073, 64 pins adrift.

Wan Rohadi B Wan Hassan of Kuala Lumpur picked up his first gold medal after topping the Senior Men All Events standings with 2166. Lau took the silver with 2128 and Ali Ahmad of Shah Alam A clinched the bronze medal with 2090. Singles gold medalist, Adnan Osman earned one point for Shah Alam A.

Fourth-seed, Paranaque sprang a surprise victory in the Women Team event over second-seed, Shah Alam B, 193-180 in the final. The Paranaque quartet eliminated overwhelming favorite, Kuala Lumpur, 181-172 in the semi-final match.

Shah Alam outclassed their compatriots, Shah Alam A, 225-170 in the other semi-finals to advance to the final against Paranaque. Shah Alam B settled for the silver while Kuala Lumpur and Shah Alam A were awarded the bronze medals.

Kuala Lumpur ended yesterday's Team preliminaries to advance as top seed with 2096. Kowloon finished second with 2059 with Jeju and Kuching making the cut for the medal round in third and fourth positions with 2034 and 1979 respectively.

Singles gold medalist, Zatil Iman Abdul Ghani of Shah Alam A, picked up her second individual gold medal after topping the All Events standings with 2350. Nur Irdina Batrisya and Nur Nais Falilnesa Bt Isman of Kuala Lumpur took home the silver and bronze medal with 2296 and 2207.


Paranaque springing a surprise victory in the Women Team final to win the gold

Kuala Lumpur senior women won their second gold medal with victory over second-seed Kowloon, 165-136 in the final match. The champion advanced to the final with an easy victory over fourth-seed Kuching in the semi-final match. Kowloon edged fancied Jeju, 168-163 in the other semi-final match.

Yang Young-Ja won Jeju's first gold medal of the championship by topping the Senior Women All Events standings with 2074. Rozana Binti Abdul Rasid of Kuala Lumpur took the silver medal with 1940 and Singles gold medalist, Shahlawati Mat Yusof of Shah Alam A earning the bronze medal with 1921.

The top 16 based on the All Events standings in their respective divisions qualified for the Masters Finals Top 16 Elimination Round scheduled later today with the Senior Women.
