37th Asian Intercity Bowling Championship

Taichung, Subang Jaya secures Masters gold

26th September, Tamuning: Chen Kuan Yeh, Li Shau Ping secured two gold medals at the concluding 38th Asian Intercity Bowling Chanpionship with victory in the Men and Women Masters final while Ng Yew Hup and Poziah Atan added two more gold medals in the Men and Women Senior divisions.

Doubles bronze medalist, Chen Kuan Yeh defeated Lan Shao-Kang of Taipei, 2-0 (278-215, 233-193) in the all-Taiwanese final to secure the fourth gold medal for Taichung. Chen also ousted Jake Cheng Hsing-Yueh of Taipei, 2-0 (199-193, 246-201) in the semi-finals to advance to the final.

Lan defeated Lucas Goh of Singapore, 2-0 (177-165, 258-177) in the other semi to face Chen in the gold medal match. Chen breezed past his team-mate and Singles gold medalist, Tsai Yu Shuo in the all-Taichung quarter-finals. The champion had earlier dispatched top-seed, Chen Kuan Lun, 2-0 (235-172, 199-182) in the Top 16 round.

Lan needed a strike to beat Darius See with a 9 pin count in a one-ball tie-breaker in his quarter-finals to advance after winning one match each (233-181, 193-195). Lan also won a one-ball tie-breaker against his team-mate, Ernie Cheng Hsing-Chao with a strike against a 9 pin count in the Top 16 round.

Women and Men gold medalists, Li Shao Ping and Chen Kun Yeh

In the Women's gold medal match, Li Shau Ping defeated triple gold medalist, Wang Ya Ting, 2-0 (172-166, 204-166) in the all-Taichung final to their seventh gold medal of the championship. Wang won the one-ball tie-breaker against her team-mate, Pan Yu Fen 9-7 after winning one match each in the semi-finals.

Li also won a one-ball tie-breaker against Maria Lourdes Arles of Paranaque, X-5 after winning one match each in the other semi-final match.

After managing two silver and one bronze medals, the All Events gold medalist, Ng Yew Hup captured his second gold medal with a victory over his team-mate, Kent Ng with a 2-0 (244-181, 244-208) victory in the all-Subang Jaya Men Senior Masters final match.

Ng dispatched Henry Hui of New Territories, 2-0 (225-221, 206-189) in the first semi-final match while Kent Ng defeated Virgil Toledo of Dededo, 2-0 (224-182, 207-193) in the other semi to advance to the final.

Meanwhile Subang Jaya stole the limelight in the Women Senior division by winning their fourth gold medal as well as winning the silver and bronze medals. Singles gold medalist, Poziah Atan defeated team-mate, Shirley Burnett 2-0 (188-166, 193-143) in the all Subang Jaya final.

Poziah ousted Shella Bangs of Dededo, 2-0 (173-157, 176-164) in the second semi-final match while Burnett defeated top-seed, Datin Rakiah Ali 2-0 (193-148, 192-172) in the other all-Subang Jaya semi-final to advance to the final.

Men Aenior and Women Senior Gold Medalists

Subang Jaya emerged as Women Senior overall champion with 37 points from a medal haul of 4-4-2. Dededo finished second with 10 points from five bronze medals. Subang Jaya also emerged as Men Senior overall champion with 21 points from a medal haul of 2-3-1.

Taichung emerged as Women overall champion with 34 points from a medal haul of 3-3-5 while Taichung also took the Men overall title with 26 points from a medal haul of 4-0-3. Paranaque finished second in the Women division with 18 points and Taipei finished second in the Men division with 11 points.

Taichung took the coveted Overall champion crown 60 points from a total medal haul of 7-3-8, just two points ahead of Subang Jaya, who finished second with 58 points from a total medal haul of 6-7-3.

A total of 120 athletes from fourteen cities took part in this year's championships. A flag handing-over ceremony was held at the victory banquet from this year's host, Tamuning to AIBC President, Mr Johnson Cheng and to Taipei as next Asian Intercity Bowling Championship host in 2027.
