Koreans sweep Mixed Open titles

21st December, Seberang Prai: 2019 champion, Kang Hee Won led a Korean sweep of the Mixed Open Masters title at the concluding 50th Penang Pesta International Bowling Championships with Jang Tae Joon and Lee Tae Hee finishing as first and second runners-up while Nora Lyana Nastasia of Malaysia won the Women's crown.

Both title contenders started the championship match with four strikes-in-a-row but when the topseed, Jang missed two single-pin spares in the fifth and sixth frames, Kang added a double in the sixth and seventh frames to pull away to a 22 pins lead.

Although Jang made a comeback with a double in the ninth and tenth frames, Kang responded with three strikes-in-a-row from frame nine to take the match, 255-214, forcing a sudden-death decider. Both started the second match moderately alternating strikes and spares up to the fourth frame.

Jang encountered an 8-pin split in the fifth frame to trail Kang but Jang bounced back brilliantly with four strikes-in-a-row to move ahead of Kang with the tenth frame to decide the outcome. Jang failed to return a double and ending with 213.

Kang doubled in the tenth frame to end with 217 and took a well-deserved victory. Kang, who was seeded third, had earlier edged second-seed, Lee Tae Hee of CNTU in the first all-Korean semi-final match, 193-184 to face Jang in the final.

The champion took home a whopping RM50,000 (approx. US$11,000) top prize leaving Jang settling for RM25,000 as first runner-up. Lee earned RM10,000 as second runner-up. Jang had earlier topped the 8-games Masters finals with 1840 to advance to the Stepladder finals as topseed. Lee and Kang tied in second with 1762.

Meanwhile, Nora Lyana Nastasia of Malaysia emerged as the top women in the earlier 8-games Mixed Open Masters finals after missing the cut for the Stepladder finals by 15 pins with 1747. She earned the RM7,000 and claimed the Women's crown.

Malaysian National Youth member, Anis Hannani finished eight with 1689 to clinch the Women's first runner-up spot and a prize of RM3,000. Women's Graded Masters champion, Jeong Jeong Yoon of Gumi City Hall, Korea finished ninth to take the second runner-up spot with 1683 and a prize of RM2,500.

YBhg Datuk Seri Hj Farizan Bin Darus, President of Penang Tenpin Bowling Association and PTBPP Patron, YBhg. Tan Sri Md Noor Bin Rahim. were on hand to present the trophies and prizes to the winners. Participants and officials will be attending the Victory Banquet hosted by PTBPP at The Light Hotel Grand Ballroom later this evening.

One hundred and ninety three bowlers participated in the Mixed Open Masters division bowling two blocks of 8 games each last two days. The Top 48 qualified for the Masters Finals over 8 games to determine the top 3 proceeding to the Stepladder Finals today.
