Malaysian trio sets course for another gold

20th September, Bangkok: Doubles gold medalist, Natasha Roslan and Sin Li Jane teamed up with Gillian Lim to set course for Malaysia's fourth gold medal at the 27th MWA Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships 2024 after ending the Women's Trios first block ahead of Singapore in second and Philippines in third.

Malaysia got off the block with a cracking 693 in their opening game to lead arch-rival, Singapore by 56 pins. Singapore's first trio of Bernice Lim, Singles gold medalist, Daphne Tan and New Hui Fen also did well to start off with 637.

The pace-setter shot another superb 671 to stretch their lead to 93 pins as Singapore added another good game of 634 to stay in second. Korea's second pair of Doubles silver medalist, Jung Da Wun, Baek Seung Ja and Ka Yun Mi were third for the first two games.

Despite managing only 597 in their third game, Malaysia ended the block still in the lead with 1961. Singapore shot 650 to narrow the gap to 40 pins but settled for second with 1921. Korea ended with a poor 521 to drop down the field.

Krizziah Lyn Macatula, Marie ALexis Sy and Singles silver medalist, Lara Posadas-Wong of Philippines stormed home with 645 to snatch third with 1839. Japan and Chinese Taipei put in a late charge to share fourth position with 1832. Singapore's second trio took sixth spot ahead of two Korea trios.

Meanwhile, Korea's first trio of Kim Kyung Min, Hwang Dong Wook and Bae Jung Hun topped the opening squad of the Men's Trios with 2004 despite their poor 594 opener. But they quickly caught up the early pace-setter with two sizzling 704 and 706 in their next two games.

Qatar and Australia set the early running but fizzled off soon after. Doubles gold medalist, Shaqeem Izwan Teh and Tun Hakim teamed up with Izz Naqiuddin Putera of Malaysia stormed home to clinch second with 1891 while New Zealand took third spot with 1889.

In the second squad, Korea's second trio of Park Dong Hyuk led from start to finish to take the squad with 1939 but fell short by 65 pins to overhaul their compatriots and settled for second in combined scores. Australia's second trio of Chris Castle, Callum Borck and Scott Robertson finished second in this squad with 1857.

The second Malaysian trio of Syafiq Ridhwan, Hafiz Zainuddin and Singles gold medalist, Rafiq Ismail took third spot with 1851. The first Malaysian trio settled for third overall followed by New Zealand and Australia rounding out the top five.

The women will complete their second block tomorrow morning followed by the Men's Squad 2 i the afternoon. The Men's Squad 1 will end the Trios preliminaries and will decide the winners. The medal ceremony for the Trios event will only be held after the completion of the Team event second block on Monday, September 23.
