Top seeds cruise into Masters quarter-finals

30th October, Shah Alam: Top seeds, Wan Rohadi B Wan Hassan of Kuala Lumpur, Muhd Nur Aiman of Petaling Jaya, Zatil Iman Abdul Ghani of Shah Alam A and Yang Young-Ja of Jeju cruised into the Senior Men, Men, Women and Senior Women quarter-finals of the 36th Asian Intercity Bowling Championships with victories in the Round of 16 Masters Finals.

The Senior Women Masters Round of 16 started off this morning with Yang easily defeating 16th-seed, Pg Mahani Pg Hj Momin of Belait, 2-0 (160-147, 186-156) to advance to the Top 8 quarter-finals. Second-seed, Rozana Bt Abdul Rashid also had a 2-0 victory over 15th-seed, Siti Salmiah Hr Abd Majid of Shah Alam A.

Third-seed, Shahlawati Mat Yusof of Shah Alam A had to win a one-ball roll-off to break a 1-1 tie on the fifth time with a strike to 14th-seed, Poziah Atan of Petaling Jaya on a nine-pin count. 13th-seed, Mastura Bt Mahmud won the one-ball tie-breaker with nine pins over Salwah Bt Buang's six pins in an all-Kuala Lumpur match.

Sixth-seed, Money Chin of Kowloon, 9th-seed, Nur Hashilah Bt Hashim of Kuala Lumpur, 10th-seed May Hui of Kowloon and 12th-seed Pia Basa of Paranaque were victorious over their opponents to make the cut for the Top 8 quarter-finals.


Senior Women and Senior Men Masters top seeds, Yang Young-Ja and Wan Rohadi N Wan Hassan

Sixth-seed, Money Chin of Kowloon, 9th-seed, Nur Hashilah Bt Hashim of Kuala Lumpur, 10th-seed May Hui of Kowloon and 12th-seed Pia Basa of Paranaque were victorious over their opponents to make the cut for the Top 8 quarter-finals.

In the afternoon Senior Men Round of 16, the stand outs were top seed Wan Rohadi B Wan Hassan of Kuala Lumpur, Ali Ahmad of Shah Alam A, Mavi Chan of Kowloon, Zaba Othman of Shah Alam A and Y.H. Ng of Petaling Jaya all had 2-0 victories against their opponents to make the next round Top 8 quarter-finals.

Two finalists from Kuching, Robert Lu and Wagiman Kassim had to survived the one-ball roll-off tie-breaker to advance. The final Top 8 quarter-finals spot went to 10th-seed Othman Ibrahim of Shah Alam B after he edged 7th-seed, Shazally B Mohd Khamis of Kuala Lumpur with a strike to nine pins in the third one-ball roll-off to break a one-all tie.

Meanwhile, Singles gold medalist, Zatil Iman of Shah Alam A and the only top seed who had to win her one-ball tie-breaker to advance to the Women Top 8 quarter-finals against 16th-seed, Lee Ju-Hee of Jeju (220-187, 171-187).

Only three had a 2-0 victories over their opponents to advance to the next round. They were 8th-seed, Lavina Kho Jia Jie of Kuching, 14th-seed, Jerlyn Lam of Singapore and 15th-seed, Louis Sophia Santarin of Pasay. Others had to win their one-ball tie-breaker to make the cut.

Team and All Events gold medalist and top seed, Muhd Nur Aiman of Petaling Jaya was amongst the stand outs to advance with 2-0 victories. Singles and Doubles gold medalist, Oh Gi Tae of Seong Nam, his compatriot, Won Jong Hyeok and Jeremiah Camacho of Tamuning were the other three finalists having 2-0 victories as well.

Third-seed, Stanley Lau of Kowloon, 7th-seed Noah Taimanglo of Tamuning and 11th-seed, Mark Leong of Singapore all made the next round over the one-ball tie-breaker roll-offs.


Women and Men Masters top seeds, Muhd Nur Aiman and Zatil Iman

The Senior Women and Senior Men Top 8 quarter-finalists will take to the lanes tomorrow morning while the Women and Men divisions will contest their Top 8 round thereafter. The field will be cut to Top 4 semi-finals in their respective divisions.

The winners of the semi-finals will square off in the Top 2 title matches to win the final gold medal of the championship. Kuala Lumpur is poised to win the overall city champion, currently with 47 points. But Shah Alam A, with 43 points is the only city which could seriously mount a challenge.
