First Gold medal for Singapore men and Korea women

23rd September, Bangkok: First block leader, Singapore won their first medal at the 27th MWA Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships 2024 with victory in the Men's Team of Five earlier today while Korea also captured their first gold medal in the Women's Team of Five.

With 211 pins cushion from yesterday's first block, Singapore's Jaris Goh (alternating with Mike Ong), Joel Tan, Nu'Man Syahmi, Darren Ong and Jomond Chia got off the second block with a superb 1030 but saw their lead cut to 157 pins after Malaysia started better with stunning 1146.

Syafiq Ridhwan, Izz Naqiuddin Putera, Tun Hakim, Hafiz Zainuddin and Rafiq Ismail added another sizzling 1104 to further cut Singapore's lead to 149 pins. Hong Kong, China had the best start with 1153 in the fourth but managed only 956 to move up to third above China.

Singapore ended the block with 999 for a total of 6449 to seal their gold medal. Malaysia finished stronger with 1122 but fell short by just 26 pins to settle for the silver medal with 6423.


Singapore winning their first gold medal in the Men's Team of Five

Jovi Ma, Keith Mark, Ivan Tse, Tony Wong and Wu Siu Hong of Hong Kong, China ended with 1047 to clinch the bronze medal with 6237. China missed the podium after finishing fourth with 6100, 133 pins behind Hong Kong. Despite missing on the team, Rafiq Ismail of Malaysia captured his third gold medal after topping the Men's All Events with 5354 (24 games).

His team-mate, Hafiz Zainuddin added a silver medal by taking up second position with 5303. Singles silver medalist, Jarrod Langford and Korea's Park Dong Hyuk were the co-winners of the bronze medal.

In the women's division, first block leader, Singapore had a disastrous start with a poor 885 in their opening game of the second block to drop down to fourth. Malaysia's Natasha Roslan, Gillian Lim, Nur Syazwani (alternating with Faten Najihah), Nora Lyana Nastasia and Sin Li Jane got off with 1059 to take over the lead.

Japan's Haru Suzuki, Shion Izumune, Mirai Ishaimoto, Nanami Irie and Yuri Sato started with a stunning 1145 to leapfrog into second. Baek Seung Ja, Kim Se Yeon, Jeong Jeong Yoon (alternating with Kim Nin Hee), Ka Yun Mi and Jung Da Wun shot 1031 and slipped to third behind the Japanese.

Malaysia continued with their strong pace with 1049 in the fifth game to remain in the lead. Korea downed 1022 to move into second, 34 pins adrift Malaysia and 37 pins ahead of Japan, who managed only 984.

It all came down to the sixth and final game with Malaysia and Korea ironically drawn into a same pair of lanes. Malaysia had a slight edge over Korea right up to the eight frame. Eventually, Korea prevailed to end with 1054 and 6100 total to seal the gold medal.

Malaysia ended with 1003 to settle for the silver medal with 6083, just 17 pins adrift. Japan took home the bronze medal with 5988. Singapore was unable to catch the leading trio and missed out in a disappointing fourth position with 5847.

All was not lost as Doubles gold medalist, Sin Li Jane added a sixth gold medal haul for Malaysia by topping the Women's All Events standings with 5152. Singles and Trios gold medalist, Daphne Tan took home the silver medal with 5104 while Yuri Sato clinched the bronze medal with 5054.

The top 16 men and top 16 women in the All Events standings qualified for the Round-Robin Masters Finals to be contested over two blocks on September 24 and 25. The top 3 men and top 3 women at the end of the two blocks will proceed to the Stepladder Shootout finals to determine the Masters medalists.
